Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Redstone Build 14279
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 11:09 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

New Redstone build for fast ring insiders now available

Microsoft has just released a new Windows 10 Redstone preview build for Insiders enrolled in the fast ring, this time providing a few new features too (as compared to previous builds that were exclusively focused on improving performance and fixing bugs).

Windows 10 Redstone build 14270 comes with Cortana in more languages, including Spanish (Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil) and French (Canada). Just like before, the personal assistant has been optimized for each market, so you’ll notice some particular features depending on the country you’re using it in.

“For instance, in Brazil – Cortana is fond of pasteis which is a common food found in many regions across Brazil. And in Mexico, we added local flavor to reflect the accent and language of the country,” Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

More Cortana features and wallpaper options

Additionally, Cortana has been improved with features to remember things that are important for you, so starting with this build, you can have the personal assistant remind you of reading a book or washing the car.

“You have the option to set specific details like location, time, and people at a later time so that Cortana will surface it when its most relevant. You can always view and edit all of these in the same place you see your reminders in Cortana today. In future builds Cortana will be able to retrieve these upon request, just like a real personal assistant would,” Aul adds.

Furthermore, Windows 10 build 14279 is the first one to merge backgrounds for the lock screen and the logon screen. Starting today, you are allowed to set a wallpaper that will be displayed on both. In future builds, Windows Spotlight wallpapers will also be supported, so Microsoft will be in charge of replacing the background on both the lock screen and the logon screen.

New transition effects will also debut soon, Microsoft promises, so it looks like the work on the Redstone update advances quite nicely these days.

  Ghostery for Firefox 6.0.2
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 11:06 PM - Forum: Freeware - No Replies

Ghostery - Protect your privacy. See who's tracking your web browsing and block them.

DETECT
Ghostery sees the "invisible" web, detecting trackers, web bugs, pixels, and beacons placed on web pages by Facebook, Google, and thousands of other companies interested in your activity.

LEARN
After showing you who operates behind the scenes, Ghostery also gives you the opportunity to learn more about each company it identifies, including links to their privacy policy and opt-out options.

CONTROL
Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and iframes.

COLLABORATE
Ghostery also includes the optional, opt-in feature called Ghostrank, which sends Ghostery servers anonymous information about the trackers you encounter and where you encounter them. This allows us to create a more comprehensive list of detectable items, and helps us create a more transparent behavioral advertising ecosystem.

PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY
Ghostery is built and maintained for users that care about their online privacy, and is engineered with privacy as a primary goal. Ghostery use is anonymous. No registrations or sign-ups are required. The Ghostery plug-in does not place cookies into your browser. Besides a single, non-identified ping on install and upgrade, Ghostery never receives any data from users unless they've chosen to participate in Ghostrank. Ghostrank data itself is anonymous, is NEVER used for advertising targeting purposes, and is only shared in aggregated, non-personal, statistical form.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Receives Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update at Verizon
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 10:41 PM - Forum: Phones & Tablets News - No Replies

One of the first carriers in the US to offer the upgrade

Samsung has yet to provide Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to most of its high-end smartphones. In fact, the South Korean company did not even announce which devices will receive the Marshmallow upgrade.

Luckily, many Samsung documents leaked in the last couple of months contain the names of the phones and tablets that might receive the update this year.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5, along with their variations, are among the first smartphones to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

We reported a few weeks ago that Samsung kicked off the rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in South Korea. In the meantime, the update arrived in Europe, but many Galaxy S6/S6 edge users have yet to receive the update.

Today, US major carrier Verizon Wireless announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now available for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 owners.

As the Big Red points out, this is “the first Galaxy device at Verizon to receive Android's latest Marshmallow OS update.”

Wi-Fi Calling added, Amazon Appstore removed

Among the most significant new features and improvements included in the update, Verizon mentions “Now on Tap,” which provides users with cards that contain useful information and apps.

Also, the highly praised Doze mode that puts the smartphone into a sleep slate, thus preserving the phone's battery even more. Samsung Galaxy Note 5 users will be able to choose to give specific permissions to any application installed on their smartphones.

Wi-Fi calling will be available as well, but you will have to activate HD Voice directly on the device by heading to Settings / Advanced Calling / Activate Advanced Calling.

With the addition of Material Design, many visual changes will be implemented as well. Keep in mind that the Amazon Appstore application has been removed in Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

According to Verizon, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be pushed in waves, which means that it might not be available for all devices at the same time.

Known Bugs in Windows 10 Redstone Build 14279 - Kaspersky Software Not Working
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 10:35 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - Replies (1)

Microsoft reveals the list of known issues in this build

Since it’s just available for fast ring users, the newly-released Windows 10 Redstone build 14279 still comes with several bugs and Microsoft has detailed all of them in an announcement today.

First of all, it’s worth mentioning that Kaspersky software still doesn’t work in this build. This has been a problem with the latest Redstone build as well, and Microsoft says that it’s already working with the security software company to fix this.

“If you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Internet Security, or the Kaspersky Total Security Suite installed on your PC there is a known driver bug that prevents these programs from working as expected in builds from the Development Branch. We are partnering with Kaspersky to fix this issue for a future release, but at this time there are no known workarounds,” Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

Since no workarounds are available at this point, your only option is to switch to a different antivirus, and Microsoft says that Windows Defender is the best choice.

Surface bugs

Also, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book are seeing a unique bug causing freezes or hangs, which in the end are leading to input methods such as the keyboard and touch to stop responding. Aul explains that the only workaround in this case is to force-reboot the device by keeping the power button pressed for about 10 seconds.

Furthermore, some apps might crash because of an unknown reliability issue that the Windows team is still looking into. The affected apps include QQ, Windows Live Mail, and Expression Encoder 4, but more could be impacted.

And last but not least, there’s a bug affecting the notification area, which might end up out of alignment in case you turn on the “always show all icons in the notification area” setting. There’s no workaround this time, so you need to disable this option completely.

Xiaomi Mi Note with Windows 10 Mobile Shows Up on Microsoft Official Channel
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 10:25 PM - Forum: Phones & Tablets News - No Replies

Some other Xiaomi phones might be offered Microsoft's OS

It looks like Microsoft and Xiaomi have a solid partnership since the release of Windows 10 Mobile ROM for the Mi4. However, the collaboration between the two companies might extend to more devices in the coming months.

If you don't recall, we reported a few weeks ago that a handful of Xiaomi and OnePlus smartphones would be offered Windows 10 Mobile ROMs.
One of the smartphones that should receive a Windows 10 Mobile ROM is the Xiaomi Mi5, which hasn't yet been released on the market but should hit shelves by April.

OnePlus 2 and OnePlus 3 are rumored to be offered Windows 10 Mobile ROMs as well, but no time frame for their release has been provided yet.

The good news is Mi5 might not be the only Xiaomi smartphone to be compatible with Windows 10 Mobile. The folks over at MicrosoftInsider report that a Xiaomi Mi Note phablet running Windows 10 Mobile has been spotted on Microsoft official Weibo account.

Microsoft China posted an advert that announces the launch of Xiaomi Mi Note with Windows 10 Mobile. It also shows the device's startup screen with features like Cortana.

A mid-range smartphone equipped with a rather old chipset

Xiaomi Mi Note is not an old smartphone though it does come with an obsolete Qualcomm chipset inside. The phablet was launched on the market back in January 2015 with Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system onboard, but it's expected to receive a Marshmallow upgrade this year.

Hardware-wise, the smartphone is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, coupled with an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit and 3GB of RAM.

The Mi Note packs either 16GB or 64GB of internal memory, which can't be expanded since the smartphone lacks microSD card slot.

Also, Xiaomi's mid-range handset sports a larger 5.7-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating.

There's also a 13-megapixel camera on the back that features autofocus, dual-LED flash and 4K video recording, as well as a secondary 4-UltraPixel camera in the front.

Xiaomi Mi Note is powered by a large 3,000 mAh non-removable battery and includes dual-SIM and 4G LTE support, along with microUSB 2.0, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS with AGPS and GLONASS.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Officially Introduced in India, Prices Start at $150
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 10:21 PM - Forum: Phones & Tablets News - No Replies

First flash sale will take place on March 9 on Amazon India

As expected, Xiaomi officially launched the mid-range Redmi Note 3 phablet in India. The smartphone has been previously teased by the Chinese company, but no details on the prices were available at that time.

Today, at the launch event, Xiaomi confirmed that the Redmi Note 3 will be available for purchase in India on March 9. The first flash sale will take place next week on Amazon India and Mi.com website.

Potential customers should know that the mid-range handset will be available in Champagne Gold, Silver and Dark Grey color options.

According to a new report, the smartphone will cost Rs 9,999 ($150/€135) outright for the 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM variant, or Rs 11,999 ($180/€160) for the 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM model.

Another interesting aspect is the fact that this is the third “Made in India” Xiaomi smartphone after Redmi 2 Prime and Redmi Note Prime.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 ships with MIUI 7 based on Android Lollipop operating system. It comes with support for 13 Indian languages and a full metal industrial design.

Specs-wise, the Redmi Note 3 sports a 5.5-inch capacitive touchscreen full HD (1080p) laminated display. On the inside, the smartphone employs the services of a 1.8GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor and an Adreno 510 graphics processing unit.

Aside from the 16/32GB internal storage, the Redmi Note 3 includes microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

At the back, Xiaomi's mid-range smartphone packs an impressive 16-megapixel camera with phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash, f/2.0 aperture and full HD (1080p) video recording. There's also a secondary 5-megapixel camera in the front for selfies and video calls.

Hybrid dual-SIM support, fingerprint scanner

The Redmi Note 3 comes with hybrid dual-SIM support, as well as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, microUSB 2.0 and GPS with AGPS connectivity options.
Also, the phablet features a fingerprint scanner, infrared sensor and a massive 4,000 mAh non-removable battery with fast charging.

“We are extremely excited to be launching Redmi Note 3 in India, which is the start of many firsts for us in 2016 and more than meets the demands of our hardcore Mi fans. We literally pioneered the category of ‘phablets’ below INR 10,000 in India, and with Redmi Note 3 we are redefining what you can get in this category.

“2016 is a significant year for us and we are looking forward to introduce even more amazing products in India in the year to come,” said Xiaomi VP Hugo Barra.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Teardown Shows Sony Camera Sensor, Not BRITECELL
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-04-2016 , 10:16 PM - Forum: Phones & Tablets News - No Replies

Model hasn't been confirmed, but it could be the IMX260

One of the major changes included in the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge over their predecessors is the 12-megapixel camera that features dual pixel technology.

Samsung's previous flagship smartphones contained 16-megapixel camera modules, but with the Galaxy S7 this has changed as the South Korean company is now focusing on quality rather than the megapixel number.

Although many have been pretty skeptic about the performance of Galaxy S7's 12-megapixel camera, early tests show improved quality over the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 cameras.

The most obvious is the blazing fast focus due to the dual pixel technology. As a matter fact, the Galaxy S7 camera might offer the fastest autofocus feature ever included in a smartphone.

BRITECELL camera technology not yet ready for prime time

But what about the module camera? It looks like Samsung's BRITECELL camera technology isn't quite ready for prime time since the South Korean company has decided to include a Sony module inside the Galaxy S7/S7 edge.

The folks over at Chipworks have decided to open up the Galaxy S7 edge and see what's inside. One of the things they have managed to confirm is the fact that the 12-megapixel camera inside the smartphone has a Sony sensor.

They haven't been able to confirm the model number, but rumor has it that it's a Sony IMX260, the newest camera sensor coming from the Japanese company.

“Our lab staff have removed the imaging chip from the 12 MP camera module and have found a Sony back-illuminated (Exmor R) CMOS image sensor. We were expecting to find TSV arrays around the periphery of the active pixel array, corresponding to Sony’s stacked chip (Exmor RS) technology platform,” reads Chipworks' article.

Also, the 1.4-micron pixel size of the Sony sensor has been confirmed as well, along with the camera module measurements: 12.1 x 12.1 x 5.4mm.
On the other hand, the 5-megapixel front-facing camera includes a Samsung S5K4E6XP sensor that measures 1.34-micron pixel.

In regards to the dual pixel technology implemented in the Galaxy S7 edge, the folks at Chipworks are writing that “the full chip PDAF functionality, which requires dual readout from each pixel, was implemented with a multi-chip solution rather than a stacked (CIS + ISP) solution.”
