It looks like the Ubuntu developers are not wasting any time, and they've already started working on the next release of the popular GNU/Linux operating system.
Yes, we're talking about Ubuntu 16.10, which has been dubbed "Yakkety Yak" by Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth on the day the company launched their sixth LTS (Long Term Support) release, Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus).
We've covered the entire development cycle of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system, and we're planning on covering the one of the upcoming Ubuntu 16.10 OS too, keeping you guys informed of the new features that are about to be implemented as they're revealed.
We took a quick look under the hood of the first 64-bit daily build Live ISO image of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) to tell you what's new, but there's nothing new to report because it includes the same components that are available in the Ubuntu 16.04 ISOs.
We've already told you earlier that the Ubuntu developers have already put together a draft release schedule for Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), and it looks like the distro will be officially released on October 20, 2016.
Unfortunately, Mark Shuttleworth didn't share with us any information about the plans for the Ubuntu 16.10, so we can only guess that Canonical will continue to improve the Unity 8 desktop environment for desktops, as part of its convergence vision, so Ubuntu 16.10 might be a testbed for that.
For now, if you want to become an early adopter, you can download either the 64-bit or 32-bit Live ISO images of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). The repositories for Ubuntu 16.10 are also online since a couple of days ago.

Fallout 4 Will Add Wide Range of Base Building Options in Far Harbor |

Bethesda might have just launched a downloadable content pack associated with Fallout 4 that was centered on expanding the options associated with base building, called Wasteland Workshop, but it seems that the development team has even bigger plans when it comes to the next DLC, Far Harbor.
The studio has delivered a beta version of update 1.5 on the Steam digital distribution system, and gamers have also explored it for clues about the future of the open world experience, with a Reddit user getting a detailed list of the new options that gamers will have when it comes to settlement expansion.
Boxcars can be added to player-driven locations, apparently only in blue and orange, and there are unique scaffoldings and warehouses that can be erected alongside barns and ball tracks, with elevators added for gamers who want to create multiple storied houses.
Far Harbor for Fallout 4 will also add more posters as well as racks and display cases that will allow gamers to show off their unique equipment while advanced switches and machinery can be used to create manufacturing areas in settlements.
Bethesda has not offered a full look at the kinds of enhancements that will be part of the third major DLC pack for its open world title.
"Fallout 4 is preparing for the second round of content drops"
Far Harbor will take gamers to an entirely new area of the universe, which is set on an island off the coast, which has some unique factions that gamers will have to interact with and new enemies to battle as they try to deal with new challenges that seem to involve Nick Valentine and his unique sleuthing abilities.
This is the biggest DLC drop associated with Fallout 4 and Bethesda says that it is working on the second season of new experience that might debut as early as this fall although the team has not offered any kind of details about its plans.
The company is currently also working on the Survival Mode for the game, which is designed to make the game more challenging by significantly revamping the combat system and the way characters interact with resources like water, food and shelter.
Bethesda says that its most recent open world experience has been a hit with fans and the decision to offer extra DLC is designed to keep gamers engaged with it for even longer.

Quantum Break Will Get Patch on Xbox One, PC Before Week's End |

The development team at Remedy Entertainment and publisher Microsoft are aiming to deliver a new patch for the Xbox One and the PC versions of Quantum Break before the end of the week, with the company planning to offer a full list of changes once the update goes through the certification process and is ready for release.
The information comes from the Twitter account of Thomas Puha, the head of public relations for the team in charge of the title, and he believes that there's only a small chance that problems with the testing process will cause a delay.
The developer is not ready to offer any details about the tweaks that will be made in the Quantum Break update, but the two companies have said that they have been using forums and social media to track fan feedback and get a clear idea of what they need to deal with quickly.
On the PC, the video game suffers from stuttering and slow rendering after long play sessions, and it seems that quite a bit of work is required to make sure that the problems are eliminated.
The coming update for Quantum Break will probably also involve some changes that should improve the overall campaign experience on both platforms.
"Remedy is working on a new title"
Quantum Break is the most complex project that the company has ever launched, a title that plays out mostly as a third-person shooter with some platforming elements and a series of television episodes that flesh out the narrative from the perspective of the villain of the story.
Remedy has not yet said whether it has plans to introduce any sort of downloadable content for its title or if it will only support it by launching free updates.
Quantum Break has received mostly positive reviews from the public, and Microsoft has suggested that it might work on a full sequel if the public is interested in seeing more of the universe.
Remedy has said that it is working on another major project at the moment, although it has not talked about the setting or the mechanics, but it seems that there are currently no plans to return to the Alan Wake series, despite the fact that plenty of references to it in their new game.
Microsoft positioned Quantum Break as one of the exclusive titles that have the potential to boost sales of the Xbox One and the impact of its launch will be seen when the NPD Group delivers its charts for the month of April.

Windows PowerShell and Google Docs Abused to Spread Laziok Trojan |

During the month of March 2016, a threat group has used a combination of exploits in Internet Explorer, the no-limits scripting of Windows PowerShell, and malware stored on Google Docs to infect targets with the Loziak trojan.
The Loziak trojan surfaced on the malware scene in March 2015, when Symantec observed cyber-espionage groups using it to spy on companies from the energy sector in countries from the Middle East.
Loziak is a simple infostealer, regularly used in reconnaissance campaigns when threat groups are gathering information on their target to use in attacks at a later stage.
"Attack starts with malicious JavaScript code hosted on a Polish server"
Malware analysts from security firm FireEye stumbled upon this threat while sifting through telemetry data, and say that in this particular distribution campaign, crooks were using malicious JavaScript hosted on a Polish server.
When a victim using the Internet Explorer browser would get tricked into accessing a page hosting the malicious code, an exploit would execute, leverage the CVE-2014-6332 vulnerability and execute VBScript via Internet Explorer.
All IE versions from 3 to 11 are vulnerable, and the crooks would enter a so-called GodMode on the user's machine. From here, the crooks would use Windows PowerShell scripts to download the Loziak executable from a Google Docs URL.
"Loziak is a perfect reconnaissance tool"
Loziak is installed, and the trojan immediately starts collecting information on its targets. The infostealer would collect information on the computer's name, CPU details, RAM size, location (country), and if the user had any antivirus software installed.
The data would then be sent to the crooks' servers, where it will probably be used in other attacks if they didn't happen yet.
Security researchers found it extremely curious that crooks managed to host Loziak on Google's servers. Google is known to run automated virus scans on all the files hosted on its servers.

Late Friday afternoon, pro-ISIS group the United Cyber Caliphate has defaced the website of the Lamont Christian Reformed Church in the city of Lamont, near Coopersville, Michigan.
A 15-year-old teenage girl discovered the website's defacement while searching for the church's phone number, according to local TV station FOX17.
The defacement consisted of a YouTube video and written Arabic text. The YouTube video is a famous ISIS recruitment material from Abu Muhammad al-Adnani al-Shami, the official spokesperson and a senior leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
The video was published many years ago, but it's still ominous even today, with al-Shami saying "We will conquer your Rome, break your crosses and enslave your women by the permission of Allah, the Exalted. This is His promise to us, He is glorified and He does not fail in His promise."
C.C.S. Technologies, the company in charge of the church's website restored the site the following day. Attendance to the church's next sermon was of only six people.
FBI and other authorities were called in to investigate. There have been some massive changes on the ISIS cyber-front, and we'll be following this story with a more in-depth report on the pro-ISIS hacking scene later on today.

Anonymous Shuts Down City of Denver Website After Another Fatal Police Shooting |

Friday afternoon, members of the New World Hackers (NWH), one of Anonymous' divisions, launched DDoS attacks against the city of Denver's website (denvergov.org), taking the government portal down for the rest of the day.
The assault continued the next day when hackers focused their attention on the Bank of Denver (thebankofdenver.com).
According to NWH members, both attacks were retaliation for a controversial police shooting after which Dion Avila Damon lost his life after suffering several gunshot wounds.
Another controversial police shooting incident
The shooting took place on April 12, 2016, near the Denver Art Museum at the intersection of 14th & Bannock. Damon had just dropped off his wife and child, when a police SWAT team pulled from behind and tried to serve a warrant for Mr. Damon's arrest.
Details get blurry, but the suspect was shot at least seven times through the front windshield with his wife and child nearby. Damon was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a press conference after the shooting, Denver police chief said Damon was a suspect in a robbery case and that investigators did not determine if Damon fired at the police or that he had a gun. According to Denver reporters from Unicorn Riot, shots were fired as soon as police officers exited their vehicles.
In an interview with FOX31 Denver, Damon's wife said that her husband dropped her off to pay a traffic fine at the local courthouse and that she told cops that her husband was unarmed when police arrived.
Anonymous have intervened before
This is not the first time when Anonymous hackers have gone after US police officers. In February, Anonymous leaked the personal details of 52 officers and employees of the Cincinnati Police Department after the controversial death of Paul Gaston.
The group also doxed Javier Ortiz, a Miami police officer and the local leader of the Miami FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) union, who released the personal details of a woman who complained about another cop speeding on the highway. On social media, Mr. Ortiz asked friends and followers to call her and give her a piece of their mind.

Microsoft reveals all about Windows 10's Linux subsystem |

The arrival of Bash in Windows 10 took many people by surprise, but it opens up a number of opportunities including the ability to run GUI Linux apps. But it's about much more than just that. Microsoft wants people who are confused about the arrival of (deep breath...) Bash on Ubuntu on Windows to know of the potential, and has produced an explainer about the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Microsoft's Deepu Thomas says that the subsystem was created by the Microsoft Windows Kernel team, and goes on to explain that this is much more than an interpretation layer or virtual machine. In fact, the Windows Subsystem for Linux was born from work carried out years ago for the NT kernel that was meant to bring POSIX and OS/2 support.
Thomas says that 'the magic happens' in the space between the user mode Linux binaries and the Windows kernel components. Microsoft made it possible for Linux system calls to be directed to the Windows kernel by putting unmodified Linux binaries in Pico processes. He explains a little about the makeup of the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
WSL is a collection of components that enables native Linux ELF64 binaries to run on Windows. It contains both user mode and kernel mode components. It is primarily comprised of:
User mode session manager service that handles the Linux instance life cycle
Pico provider drivers (lxss.sys, lxcore.sys) that emulate a Linux kernel by translating Linux syscalls
Pico processes that host the unmodified user mode Linux (e.g. /bin/bash)
Of course, bringing the subsystem to Windows was far from a simple process. Getting the two to work together involves some jiggery pokery that Thomas explains:
WSL executes unmodified Linux ELF64 binaries by virtualizing a Linux kernel interface on top of the Windows NT kernel. One of the kernel interfaces that it exposes are system calls (syscalls). A syscall is a service provided by the kernel that can be called from user mode. Both the Linux kernel and Windows NT kernel expose several hundred syscalls to user mode, but they have different semantics and are generally not directly compatible. For example, the Linux kernel includes things like fork, open, and kill while the Windows NT kernel has the comparable NtCreateProcess, NtOpenFile, and NtTerminateProcess.
The Windows Subsystem for Linux includes kernel mode drivers (lxss.sys and lxcore.sys) that are responsible for handling Linux system call requests in coordination with the Windows NT kernel. The drivers do not contain code from the Linux kernel but are instead a clean room implementation of Linux-compatible kernel interfaces. On native Linux, when a syscall is made from a user mode executable it is handled by the Linux kernel. On WSL, when a syscall is made from the same executable the Windows NT kernel forwards the request to lxcore.sys. Where possible, lxcore.sys translates the Linux syscall to the equivalent Windows NT call which in turn does the heavy lifting. Where there is no reasonable mapping the Windows kernel mode driver must service the request directly.
Thomas' article is just the first of a series, so you can expect to learn much more about how Microsoft brought Linux to Windows and how it works in the coming weeks.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update is shaping up to be something really special |

Windows 10 has been the subject of a lot of criticism since it launched, including quite a lot from me. But at the same time, Microsoft reports that the latest version of its operating system is installed on a staggering quarter of a billion devices. The company must be doing something right. Where Windows 10 succeeds -- particularly for Windows Insiders -- is that it is constantly evolving.
Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14328 is the latest build out of the door and it shows great signs of improvement. It might be a little early to call it, but if this massive update is anything to go by, the summer release of Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (or Windows 10 Anniversary Update) could be the real turning point for Windows 10 when it manages to win over the doubters and jump to justified -- rather than forced -- dominance. Build 14328 is a big update, and there's a lot to love.
Actually, the redesigned Start menu is a little strange to start with... but love will almost certainly follow. Perhaps it's just the fact that we've had a year to get used to Windows 10's way of doing things, but when you first fire it up, it certainly feels weird. But while it took a little while to become accustomed to the changes that were implemented between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, the anniversary version of the Start menu quickly begins to feel as though it has been thought out.
To start with, apps are brought right to the front -- that's precisely what the Start menu is used to access, after all. The six little icons to the left provide easy, and space-saving access to key things such as Settings, Network and Documents, and you can pay as much or as little attention to the tiles to the right as you want. Everything is much neater this time around; it's what the Windows 10 Start menu should have been from the very beginning.
The anniversary update isn't just about improvements and refinements -- although we’ll return to these shortly -- it's also about introducing new things. One of the biggest new features, designed with stylus-wielding tablet owners in mind is Windows Ink. Accessible via a taskbar icon, this provides a number of stylus-ready tools in one handy place. It provides easy access to all of the pen-enabled tools you have installed, as well as a sketchpad, stickynotes and screen annotation. The Ink Workspace is not something that everyone will be enamored with, but if you're a demon with the stylus it brings plenty of handy tools to your fingertips. Or pen tip.
At Build, Microsoft announced that badging was coming to Windows 10 -- something that will be familiar to iOS and Android users. The first place we get to see this in action is in the redesigned Action Center. So significant does Microsoft see the redesign that it has gone as far as moving the notification icon to the far right of the taskbar, to the right even of the clock. The badging means you can now see how many notifications are vying for your attention before you even click the icon.
Sticking with the taskbar, when you click the clock you can now also see your calendar -- and it doesn’t have to be an Outlook calendar! It’s something that seems so obvious that you wonder why it wasn’t included from the very beginning, but the good news is that Microsoft has now seen sense and turned the clock shortcut into something genuinely useful.
Other tweaks, such as the addition of media playback controls to the lock screen shows that Microsoft is both thinking about how people use Windows 10, and listening to the feedback that has been provided. As someone who is far from shy about putting the boot in when I feel it's deserved, this is great to see.
These are just some of the bigger changes to be found in the latest build of Windows 10, but there are plenty of other neat little touches here and there that make all the difference. A more refined animation that sees things sliding gently into view in the Start meu may seem like a minor thing, but it's an example of a new level of attention to detail that has been previously lacking from Windows 10.
Other nice aesthetic touches are the style of the badge overlays and a redesigned, not-quite-monochrome icon for File Explorer (although the design to unpin this from the taskbar is an odd -- albeit an easily fixed -- one). There's a lot of care an attention being poured into Windows 10 these days.
It has been a busy year for Microsoft in general and for Windows 10 specifically. I've been quick to complain about what I see as Windows 10's failing, but now it feels as though issues are being addressed. It may have taken a year, but things are really starting to take shape. For anyone who isn’t part of the Insider program, there's a real treat in store later this year when the Anniversary Update is released. In the meantime, us Insiders can keep an eye on how things develop and evolve in the run-up to the big launch.
