  SecureAPlus

The new SecureAPlus is finally here with a wealth of new features that’s bound to better protect users from any potential threats including those of the unknown variety.

For starters, SecureAPlus is not your typical PC security software. Apart from being a traditional anti-virus with its included but optional offline scanner, the headline feature here is inevitably the 12 anti-virus scanners in the cloud.
With multiple antivirus engines scanning from the cloud, not only does it boast higher detection rates in real-time but it’s also very resource efficient as all the application is doing is communicating with its servers that works 24/7 scanning all your files against a constantly updated definitions of up to 12 popular antivirus engines such as Avira, AVG, BitDefender and more.
What really makes SecureAPlus different and arguably more effective than traditional anti-viruses is its Application Whitelisting combined with the multi-engine cloud scanning.

The concept of Application Whitelisting, or application control to some, is quite simple – anything the user already trusts can run, everything else is blocked first when it tries to run and subsequently scrutinized by up to 12 anti-virus engines and even takes this further by automatically checking the file against VirusTotal’s database. An initial whitelist is made as soon as SecureAPlus is installed and this list adapts based on what the user allows or blocks overtime so every PC’s whitelist is unique based on usage.

The main benefit of this approach is that it adds a nearly absolute layer of defense against threats that antiviruses miss like zero-day malware which spell disaster even against PC with the most advanced and most updated anti-viruses installed.
There are a few caveats to using SecureAPlushowever, mainly that it requires a stable connection to the internet to truly utilize all of its features. The initial scan also takes time to complete but once it’s done the full system scans from the main console are blazingly fast at around a minute or two, half on a good day.

SecureAPlus is free for the first 12 months and is easily extendable by completing some referrals and social actions to help promote the application. The Premium version comes with extra features like 24/7 email notifications, and security status monitoring of multiple devices for $22.50 a year.
Users can activate an upgrade for any number of SecureAPlus installations exclusively on Bitsdujour. For 48 hours get 1.5-Year (18 Months) SecureAPlus Premium upgrades for Free.

After you purchase SecureAPlus, it may be used for 18 months.

How to avoid fake Chrome extensions or apps
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 11:00 PM - Forum: Guides, Tips & Tricks - No Replies

The Google Chrome Web Store is the place where Chrome users get most of their extensions, and also the place where fake and copied extensions and apps are regularly offered in.

Google has neglected the official Chrome Web Store in past years. The last redesign -- which made the store worse -- dates back to 2011. Worse, because Google decided to put apps front and center in the Chrome Web Store, and remove options for users to list new extensions.

The store has two big issues when it comes to fake apps and extensions, and both can lead to users installing these fake offerings instead of the original extension.

Apps first

The layout of search results on the store displays apps before extensions in the results. Some developers took and take advantage of this by creating applications that target the name of popular extensions.

Since apps are listed first, there is a likelihood that these apps get prime visibility on the store, and since they are displayed in the results before the extension, it is likely that they get installed by many users who use the built-in search functionality to find extensions.

This was a problem last year when apps were listed before the official uBlock Origin listing on the Chrome Web Store, and it is still an issue as of today with one fake application being listed there for months.

A search for Adblock Plus on the Chrome Web Store returned the following results.

The second apps result uses the official Adblock Plus logo, and a name that, with the exception of one additional character, is identical to the official extension name.

Avoid Fake Chrome Extensions

So what can you do to avoid fake Chrome extensions when you are using the official web store?

Whenever you run a search for Chrome extensions, use the "extensions" filter to only display extensions results. This ensures that you will only get extensions in the results and not applications.

There is unfortunately no option to enable the filter permanently. Whenever you open the Chrome Web Store to run searches, you need to enable it again.

That takes care of fake apps that are listed on search results pages, but it won't take care of fake browser extensions that may be returned when you run searches.

While it may be tempting to install the first result right away, it may not always be the original extension.

You need to use the rating and number of users who rated the extension as an indicator. This works well for popular extensions, but won't get you anywhere if the difference is just a couple of ratings, or none at all.

The Chrome Web Store offers no information about the author of an extension besides a name. While you can search for the name to list other extensions by the author, it is often not helpful as well, especially if there are none.

Since there is no author verification process, author names are no legitimacy indicator, and since authors cannot link extensions to websites to validate them, there is little you can do in this regard to find out whether an extension is real or fake.

What you can do is copy the extensions's URL, and search for it on Google or another search engine. The results may reveal a lot about it, including a project or author website, or reviews of it.

Ultimately, there is no 100% way to determine the original extension if there is a fake copy as well, and if both have about the same number of ratings.

Check if you have installed fake apps

To check whether you have installed a fake application instead of an extension, load chrome://apps/ in the browser's address bar.

If you see the name of the extension listed on the page, it is not the right one as you have just confirmed that you have installed an application instead of the extension.

Right-click on the application icon and select "remove from Chrome" to uninstall it.

Hundreds of Spotify credentials appear online
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 09:35 PM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

Hundreds of Spotify credentials appear online – users report accounts hacked, emails changed

A list containing hundreds of Spotify account credentials – including emails, usernames, passwords, account type and other details – has popped up on the website Pastebin, in what appears to be a possible security breach. After reaching out to a random sampling of the victims via email, we’ve confirmed that these users’ Spotify accounts were compromised only days ago. However, Spotify says that it “has not been hacked” and its “user records are secure.”

It’s unclear, then, where these particular account details were acquired, given that they are specific to Spotify, rather than a set of generic credentials that just happen to work on Spotify.

In addition to the email and login information, the Pastebin post also details the type of account (e.g. family, premium), when the subscription auto-renews, and the country where the account was created. The list of accounts is not limited to the U.S., but includes a number of users from all over the world.

Spotify has dealt with security incidents in the past, so one can’t immediately assume that a list of emails like this is related to a new data breach. It could have been that a list of previously compromised accounts is still circulating. And only one of the accounts we tried actually permitted a log in, which also left room for doubt about the recency of this particular incident.

But the victims we reached out to told us otherwise.

So far, over a half-dozen have responded, confirming that they did experience a Spotify account breach recently. They became aware of the breach in a number of ways – for example, one said he found songs added to his saved songs list that he hadn’t added.
Another also found his account had been used by an unknown third party.

“I suspected my account had been hacked last week as I saw ‘recently played’ songs that I’d never listened to, so I changed my password and logged out of all devices,” the victim, who preferred to remain anonymous, told us.

Several others said they were kicked out of Spotify – one even in the middle of streaming music.

When trying to log back in, these users found that their account email had been changed to a new email address not belonging to them.
To resolve the matter, users said they’ve had to work with Spotify customer service to get their account access restored.

In none of the reported cases so far did Spotify reach out to the victims immediately following the breach, nor were their passwords proactively reset for them on their behalf by Spotify.

This seems to contradict the statement a Spotify spokesperson provided us today when asked about this possible breach:

Quote:“Spotify has not been hacked and our user records are secure. We monitor Pastebin and other sites regularly. When we find Spotify credentials, we first verify that they are authentic, and if they are, we immediately notify affected users to change their passwords.

But it could be that Spotify is still in the process of verifying the account credentials, which takes time.

According to many of the users we spoke to so far, this issue occurred last week. The Pastebin is dated April 23, however. (TechCrunch is declining to link to the Pastebin page to protect the victims.)

Some of the victims are only now dealing with the fallout. A couple said they received the email notification that their password had been reset on Sunday.

“…I was definitely hacked and later tried googling ‘Spotify hack news’ last night to no avail,” one victim told us. “I noticed it last night when I opened Spotify on my phone and saw someone was using my account somewhere else.”

The unknown party reset their email address, deleted a playlist, saved music to their device, and started following a new playlist.

Others are still in the process of trying to prove to Spotify they are the legitimate account owner.

“…The person was able to change my email address without a second verification, and now I’m jumping through hoops to close my account,” another told us.

“I had to reach out to Spotify first, and it’s still ongoing,” a third said. “They’ve not been helpful, and I’ve only succeeded in getting my account locked so far.”

Because of Spotify’s delay in resetting users’ passwords, many of the victims told us they’ve had problems that extend beyond the streaming service.

Unfortunately, because people often re-use their passwords on other sites, several reported their other accounts have been hacked into as well, including their Facebook, Uber, Skype and even their bank account.

It’s unclear why the unknown third-parties responsible for this incident would want to actually use the Spotify user log ins to play music – especially as that alerts the users to the breach. Typically, a hacker would want to simply collect then re-sell the credentials, which makes this particular incident odd.

Ransomware Can Infect Android Devices Without Any User Interaction
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 06:32 PM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

Hacking Team and Towelroot exploits combined to deliver ransomware to Android devices via malvertising

Today, researchers have discovered a new mobile malware distribution campaign that does not require any type of user interaction in order to infect devices with ransomware.

The infection occurs when users visit a website that contains tainted JavaScript code. Blue Coat Labs says the malicious code is delivered via malicious ads (malvertising).

Security researchers from Zimperium have confirmed that the malicious code contained an exploit leaked last year in the Hacking Team data breach.

Malvertising hits Android devices:

The exploit leverages a vulnerability in the libxslt Android library to allow attackers to download a Linux ELF binary called module.so on the device.

This binary uses the Towelroot Android exploit (also the name of a rooting tookit) to get root privileges on the device. Once root access is ensured, module.so will also download an additional Android APK, which contains the ransomware code.

With root access in hand, the attacker can silently install the ransomware without prompting the user for any permissions.

Ransomware targets mainly older Android devices:

The name of this ransomware trojan is Cyber.Police and was first detected back in December 2014. Compared to desktop-based ransomware that encrypts files, Cyber.Police only locks the user's screen and asks them to buy two Apple iTunes gift cards worth $100 each.

Even if Apple tracks iTunes gift cards, these can be used as virtual currency on the underground hacking market and passed around for years between numerous individuals before being used.

Blue Coat Labs says that infected victims send unencrypted traffic from their device to a central command and control server. The company was able to track traffic coming from 224 different Android device models (tablets, smartphones), using Android versions between 4.0.3 and 4.4.4.

The lowest officially supported version of Android is 4.4.4, meaning attackers are targeting users who have failed or cannot upgrade their devices.

"The fact that some of these devices are known not to be vulnerable specifically to the Hacking Team libxlst exploit means that different exploits may have been used to infect some of these [other] mobile devices," Andrew Brandt of Blue Coat notes.

How to get rid of Cyber.Police:

In case you find yourself infected with the Cyber.Police Android ransomware, Blue Coat says that they've managed to remove the malware after resetting the device to factory settings.

Before going through a factory reset, users should connect the device to their PC and copy personal data to their computer.

Upgrading to a newer version of Android did not help because Cyber.Police was installed as a normal application, and Android updates keep apps intact while upgrading.

Bypass login after Windows 10 Updates
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 02:59 PM - Forum: Guides, Tips & Tricks - No Replies

Some Windows Updates require a restart of the computer to complete the installation process.

Whenever that happens, and you have not configured the system to bypass the login prompt automatically, you are asked to enter account credentials to continue. The login prompt is displayed in this case and the desktop is not loaded until the account password is entered.

This can be a nuisance even though it is usually not the end of the world. Can be a problem if Windows Updates are installed automatically and you are not present when that happens.

When you come back to the PC or device, you are greeted with a login prompt and not the desktop.

If the desktop would be loaded right after installation of updates, programs that are configured to autostart with the system would run with less interruption.

Microsoft added an option to Windows 10, or more precisely, the upcoming Anniversary Update of the operating system that is out this Summer, that allows you to configure machines running the operating system to bypass the login prompt temporarily during system updates or upgrades.

Bypass login after Windows 10 Updates:

You need to do the following to configure the feature:

  1. Tap on the Windows-key on the computer keyboard, type regedit.exe, and hit the Enter-key afterwards.

  2. Confirm the UAC prompt that is displayed afterwards.

  3. Use the tree hierarchy on the left to navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  4. Right-click on Winlogon and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value from the context menu.

  5. Name the new Dword ARSOUserConsent.

  6. Double-click on the newly created Dword and set its value to 1.

To undo the change, either delete the created Dword again by right-clicking on it and selecting the delete option, or by setting its value to 0.

You are probably wondering what is happening in the background after you enable the feature.  Windows stores the password temporarily if updates or upgrades request a restart of the operating system.

This password is then used this one time to sign the active user back in without displaying a login prompt. It works exactly like the permanent automatic sign in feature in this regard but with the difference that it works only when updates or upgrades require a restart and not all the time.

The feature can be useful at times, especially if you keep a machine running when you are not around, and have not configured it to download and install updates only on request. (via Deskmodder)

New Windows 10 Updates Causing Serious Problems
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 02:50 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - No Replies

Windows 10 has been getting a lot right lately. After infuriating many with forceful and increasingly sneaky upgrade tactics, Microsoft MSFT -7.22%’s massive Windows 10 ‘Anniversary Update’ restored some faith with a lorry load of great new features. But now problems have struck again after two new Windows 10 automatic updates began causing serious errors…

April updates ‘KB3147461’ and ‘KB3147458’ are at the centre of the controversy. Just after their release Microsoft started an official thread for users to give feedback on the pair and it has since been flooded by nearly 900 responses spread across 88 pages.

[Image: Screenshot_2016_04_23_at_15_08_56_1200x382.png]

Feedback on two new Windows 10 updates has not been good.

Users cite a huge range of issues since installing the updates, including:

  • Continuous crash loops (PCs installing the updates, restarting, reinstalling them and restarting ad infinitum)

  • Broken apps (Windows Store, Calculator, Photo Gallery, Messaging, Alarms, Solitaire, etc)

  • Star Menu crashes

  • ‘Critical Error’ pop-ups

  • Bluescreens of death

  • Broken trackpad gestures

  • Missing monitor resolutions

  • Slow boot times

User ATAt0micR3d summed up the general feeling on the thread more than 800 comments in saying: ”I’ve been battling with this update since it was issued. I really just want it to go away at this point.”

Similarly poster Thomas. Ludwig explained: “After the update and some hours of using it, the computer froze and crashed. Restarting ended in a blue screen and the message that ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, Error code 0xc00000e9 and the computer is not doing anything anymore.”

At this stage it remains unclear which of the updates is the bigger problem (it may be both), but I would strongly advise all Windows 10 users pass the word around and sit them out until Microsoft works out where the problems lie. Here are some tips for stopping automatic updates.

All in all this development comes at a bad time for Microsoft. Windows 10 market share is growing, stability has been relatively good during 2016 and the company has demonstrated that it is prepared to continually upgrade the operating system with a steady flow of new features and functionality.

But forced automatic updates never were and never will be a good idea…

Open365: open source Office 365 alternative
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-25-2016 , 02:43 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - No Replies

Open365 is an open source Office 365 alternative that allows you to edit or create documents online, and to sync files with the cloud.

The service is in beta currently but you can sign up for it already on the official website. You may use it using a web browser, download clients for Windows, Mac or Linux desktop machines, or for Android. An iOS client is in the making currently and will be made available as well soon.

Open 365 offers two main features that you can make use of. First, it enables you to synchronize files between devices you use and the cloud.
Second, it allows you to view, edit and create documents in the cloud using the technology provided by the Open Source Office suite LibreOffice Online for
that.
                                                   open365

You can sign up for the service on the official website currently but the makers plan to release repositories that you can install on servers you have control over to create a self-hosted version of Open365 that you have more control over.

When you sign up for the service you get an email address automatically assigned to you that you use to sign in to the web service and the sync clients, and for mail.

You do get 20 Gigabyte of storage as well right now which is more than what many other file synchronization services offer at the time of writing.

It is unclear however if the 20 Gigabyte are only available during the beta period.

The web service loads the "Hub" view on start automatically. It lists all libraries that you own and that are shared with you by default.

A click on a folder opens the contents directly on the web, a click on files either in one of the editors if the file format is supported, or offered for download if it is not.

The focus is on documents but support goes beyond typical document formats such as docx, xls or pptx. Open365 supports an image viewer that supports all common image formats, and a media player to play audio and video content.

Libraries or individual files can be shared or deleted online, and you may upload new files directly to the web interface using your web browser of choice.

One interesting feature is the ability to create new libraries on the Web, and here specifically the option to encrypt content so that it can only be accessed if the right password is supplied. The password is not linked to the account password.

As far as sharing is concerned, you can share files or libraries with individual users or user groups, and get full control over shared links and permissions online as well.

Document editing and creation

This works for the most part as you would expect it to work. You can load any Office document with a double-click on the web interface, and Open365 will load it in the associated editor.

You can read the document right away there, print it, or start to edit it. If you have used LibreOffice Online or offline before, you will feel right at home, but even if you have not, you will have little issues using Open365 to edit documents.

Open365 saves edits automatically in intervals, but you may use save options to to do manually at any time. Edited documents may be saved online or to the local device instead, and you may export them to the same document format or a different compatible format.

The loading time of documents is a bit slow online right now which means that you will have to wait a couple of seconds before it is displayed in the editor.

                                              open365 sync client

The sync client works for the most part as you would expect it to work. You can use drag and drop to add folders that you want to sync with the cloud, or use the built-in folder browser instead for that.

Folders are turned into libraries automatically when you add them to the sync client. You may change the name of the library and enable encryption before you hit the ok button to start the synchronization.

Options are provided to configure the sync process and other features of the desktop client. You open the options with a right-click on the icon in the system tray.

The settings allow you to set download and upload speed limits, disable http syncing, or configure what the service should do when you remove a library from a local directory or when a library is not found on the server.

Closing Words:

Open365 is an alternative to Office 365 and Google Docs. It is free and open source, and ships both with file sync and document viewing, editing and creation options on the Internet.

The option to install Open365 on your own server may make it interesting to users who want or need to keep full control of documents, and cannot or don't want to use Office 365 or Google Docs because of this.

Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Daily Build ISOs Now Available for Download
Posted by: baziroll - 04-25-2016 , 01:24 PM - Forum: Off Topic Chat - No Replies

[Image: ubuntu-16-10-yakkety-yak-daily-build-iso...3368-2.jpg]
It looks like the Ubuntu developers are not wasting any time, and they've already started working on the next release of the popular GNU/Linux operating system.

Yes, we're talking about Ubuntu 16.10, which has been dubbed "Yakkety Yak" by Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth on the day the company launched their sixth LTS (Long Term Support) release, Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus).

We've covered the entire development cycle of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system, and we're planning on covering the one of the upcoming Ubuntu 16.10 OS too, keeping you guys informed of the new features that are about to be implemented as they're revealed.

We took a quick look under the hood of the first 64-bit daily build Live ISO image of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) to tell you what's new, but there's nothing new to report because it includes the same components that are available in the Ubuntu 16.04 ISOs.

We've already told you earlier that the Ubuntu developers have already put together a draft release schedule for Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), and it looks like the distro will be officially released on October 20, 2016.

Unfortunately, Mark Shuttleworth didn't share with us any information about the plans for the Ubuntu 16.10, so we can only guess that Canonical will continue to improve the Unity 8 desktop environment for desktops, as part of its convergence vision, so Ubuntu 16.10 might be a testbed for that.

For now, if you want to become an early adopter, you can download either the 64-bit or 32-bit Live ISO images of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). The repositories for Ubuntu 16.10 are also online since a couple of days ago.
