A routine security audit has discovered malware on the computer systems of the Gundremmingen nuclear power plant in Germany. RWE, the plant's operator, shut down the power plant for precaution, despite saying it was nothing serious.
According to a press release put out by Gundremmingen power plant officials, the malware was discovered on the plant's Block B IT network that handles the fuel handling system.
The malware infection was most likely an accident, not an attack
The malware affected only the computer IT systems and not the ICS/SCADA equipment that interacts with the nuclear fuel. Officials say the equipment's role is to load and unload nuclear fuel from the power plant's Block B and then transfer old fuel to the storage pool.
Gundremmingen officials said the IT system was not connected to the Internet and that they suspect someone brought in the malware by accident on a USB thumb drive, either from home or computers found in the power plant's facility.
Authorities did not reveal the name of the malware strain but said it was nothing serious, classifying the whole incident as "N" (normal category).
Today is Chernobyl disaster's 30th anniversary
The malware infection was discovered Sunday on April 24, and two days later the power plant is still offline. Today, April 26, 2016, marks 30 years since the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.
The nuclear plant is now going through all the security procedures involved with such events, with its staff scanning all other computer systems and going through all the regular checks and motions before putting the plant back into production.
The Gundremmingen nuclear power plant is considered one of Germany's most outdated nuclear power plants. Gundremmingen is set to permanently shut down in 2021, but over 750 people protested over the weekend in the hope of convincing authorities to shut down the two reactors left working before the final deadline.

"From what we know, it was not a targeted attack on the power plant’s system; it was just a 'regular' infection, contracted most likely by someone connecting a storage device to the system. That’s what we hear from German media."
"What it shows is the main, basic issue of today’s connected systems: critical infrastructure is as vulnerable as all other systems connected to the Internet. We saw the example of the blast furnace being destroyed by a malware attack (disclosed by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security); there was Stuxnet – malware allegedly designed to physically destroy nuclear enrichment facilities in Iran."
"Operators and regulators have to understand that in an age when we see more than 310,000 new samples of malware a day, some of those samples might damage systems they were never intended to be aimed at. For such cases – of course in addition to intentional direct attacks – we have to be prepared."

There has been a lot of interest in online abuse in recent months, and social networks are taking steps to weed out the trolls and abusers. Twitter has already introduced a number of measures to help tackle trolls, and today announces the availability of a new reporting tool for users.

Now rather than having to report a number of abusive tweets individually, it is possible to report up to five tweets simultaneously. As well as reducing the workload for someone who feels the need to report content, the new tool also makes things easier for Twitter as it allows for additional information to be gathered.

Twitter says: "This update makes it easier for you to provide us with more information about the extent of abuse and reduces the time it takes to do so. That added context often helps us investigate issues and get them resolved faster. Safety continues to be a top priority at Twitter. We have more improvements coming that will give you even more control over your experience and look forward to sharing those updates soon".

Through a series of messages posted on official ISIS social media accounts and Telegram channels, the terrorist group has announced the creation of a mega hacking unit called the United Cyber Caliphate (UCC).
The new group consists of the Cyber Caliphate Army (CCA), Daesh's main hacking unit, and other pro-ISIS groups that have carried out attacks supporting the terrorists' cause, such as the Sons Caliphate Army (SCA) and Kalacnikov.TN (KTN).
Earlier in January 2016, Cyber Caliphate Army also merged forces with Pro-Palestinian hacking group AnonGhost, a former Anonymous division from which the hacktivist group distanced itself.
ISIS hackers unite to improve their collective skills
The new hacking group is far from being considered a major threat since none of them has ever carried out anything more than simplistic website defacements and small data leaks.
At the start of March, the Cyber Caliphate Army (CCA) made a fool of themselves when they hacked an SEO company from India called Add Google Online and then bragged about hacking the real Google.
Nevertheless, with all the hackers joining their skills, more dangerous attacks are bound to follow. Since the start of April, security and cyber-intelligence firms like the SITE Intel Group have been tracking UCC's actions.
Since forming, UCC has been very active
Just in the past days, UCC hackers claimed they've hacked the US State Department and leaked info on 50 staff members, ran a mass defacement campaign against Australian websites, defaced the Russian Federal Customs Service, and leaked information on 18,000 employees of the Saudi Ministry of Defense and Aviation.
The group also ran a second mass defacement campaign using the "#KillCrusaders" tag and continued its anti-Christians campaign when it defaced the website of a Michigan church last week, leaving an ominous Jihadi message behind.
The biggest data breach since UCC formed also happened last week when the group posted the names and addresses of 3,602 of the "most important citizens of #NewYork and #Brooklyn," asking ISIS sympathizers to use the information and carry out lone wolf attacks.

Copycats imitating the Armada Collective hacking group have made well over $100,000 (€90,000) from empty DDoS threats against companies all over the world.
Armada Collective is believed to be the alternative name of DD4BC, a group of crooks that surfaced last year. DD4BC operated by contacting companies via email and threatening to launch DDoS attacks if they didn't pay a Bitcoin ransom.
The group was active up until last September when Akamai exposed them. At the same time, a new group called Armada Collective arose, using the same tactic, which was active until late November - early December.
About the same time, Europol had also started an investigation. At the start of January, they arrested key suspects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and activity from the group died down.
The new group is only a copycat
As CloudFlare revealed yesterday, ever since March, someone has been using the Armada Collective name in ransom emails threatening to launch DDoS attacks.
CloudFlare says that companies that didn't pay never faced any DDoS attacks afterwards. DD4BC and Armada Collective always kept their word, and when a company didn't pay, they came back with DDoS attacks reaching peak values of 60 Gbps. This led CloudFare to deduce that this group is nothing more than a cheap copycat.
The coypcat group operates by sending ransom notes via email, where they are quick to point the user to search their name on Google, in order to see their "capabilities," "reputation," and "fame."
Additionally, the group is only using one Bitcoin wallet address to receive payments. Since Bitcoin is an anonymous digital currency, this means that if a company paid, the group would have never known which one did.
Armada Collective copycats made a fortune by doing nothing
The group made a fortune just by sending empty threats via email. A copy of the group's extortion email can be read below. After analyzing the group's Bitcoin wallet address history, Bitcoin analysis firm Chainalysis says the copycats received over $100,000 (€90,000)-worth of Bitcoin.
A typical email has no fixed ransom sum, and the group randomly asks for sums between 10 and 50 Bitcoin ($4,500 - $23,400). The sums have no correlation with the company's size and financial resources.
CloudFlare says it was alerted by the copycat's actions after more than 100 companies contacted them inquiring about their DDoS protection service. CloudFlare says that they, and other DDoS protection services, have never observed any attacks against the companies that received any such notes.
The most recent case of an Armada Collective ransom demand comes from the BlackVPN service, which received one last week. Additionally, the Cloak VPN service also received a similar threat, but it never attributed it to Armada Collective. Curiously, these services experienced downtimes from DDoS attacks, unlike CloudFlare's report, so it may seem that more than one copycat group is active on the market.
