BitTorrent says it fixed the problem in the latest beta

Back in January, Google Project Zero researcher Tavis Ormandy disclosed a vulnerability in BitTorrent app Transmission, explaining that a similar problem could exist in other clients as well.

In a new report this week, Ormandy reveals a similar security vulnerability in uTorrent, which at this point is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients on the desktop.

The issue was reported to BitTorrent in November, but just like the security researcher predicted, the parent company failed to issue a patch in the 90-day window that’s offered to resolve bugs found as part of the Project Zero program, so details were posted online this week.

The flaw exists in the web interface that allows users to control the BitTorrent client remotely, and if exploited, it could enable an attacker to get control of the vulnerable computer.

Vulnerability not fixed in latest beta
The developing company, however, says it has already prepared a patch that’s currently available as part of the latest beta release, and according to a report from TorrentFreak, it was projected to be pushed to the stable channel as soon as this week.

But as it turns out, the patch, which has also been shared with Ormandy, only renders the original exploit useless, rather than addressing the vulnerability altogether.

“It looks like BitTorrent just added a second token to uTorrent Web. That does not solve the DNS rebinding issue, it just broke my exploit,” Ormandy explained on Twitter. “It just fixed the exploit and verified it still works. I would recommend asking BitTorrent to resolve this issue if you’re affected, and it works in the default configuration so you probably are.”

BitTorrent hasn’t provided an updated statement to share new details on how and when it plans to ship a new patch, but with vulnerability info now public, the company should do this as soon as possible. The latest uTorrent update was published on February 17 to version 3.5.3 Build 44352 Beta. The most recent stable update is dated December 24 – version 3.5.1 Build 44332.

CrococryptMirror is a Backup Software and an Encryption Tool in one. It mirrors user-selected folders to encrypted folders. The destination folder can be any external storage, another folder or network share. In case a local folder is already synchronized with a cloud storage, that way an encrypted cloud backup can be accomplished. The encryption algorithms that are used are the industry standards AES-256 and Twofish-256. The used keyfile is also highly secured using common standards (PKCS#5/PBKDF2). Hence, incremental / iterative updates can be performed fast and only single files that have changed have to be updated (ideal, e.g., for Cloud Uploads). The mirroring process is a real ‘mirror’: For instance, deleted files are also removed in the backup etc.
The offered version here is the portable version of CrococryptMirror. Keyfile and settings are stored together with the application itself. Hence, the complete software including backup data can be stored on, e.g., an external hard drive and can be used without installation.
Mirroring can be done manually (on-demand) or by using the sync service which detects directory changes on the fly.

It’s an anti-piracy tool, parent company says

A Microsoft Flight Simulator DLC from Flight Sim Labs (known as FSLabs) shipped with an executable file that was used to extract Google Chrome usernames and passwords and then upload them to the parent company’s own servers.

The controversial file, called text.exe and bundled into the legitimate installer FSLabs_A320X_P3D_v2.0.1.231.exe, is described as a Chrome Password Dump tool that requires administrator privileges on any Windows version in order to gather the usernames and passwords. The file is flagged as malware by the majority of Windows security solutions.

But Lefteris Kalamaras, founder of FSLabs, says the purpose of the file is to actually help them fight against software pirates, as text.exe only collects data from computers that are running pirated versions of Flight Simulator. To determine whether a specific install of the game is pirated or not, the file checks for a database of serial numbers known for being used by copies distributed on sites like The Pirate Bay.

“If such a specific serial number is used by a pirate (a person who has illegally obtained our software) and the installer verifies this against the pirate serial numbers stored in our server database, it takes specific measures to alert us,” Kalamaras explains.

What happens with users’ data?
The FSLabs executive guarantees that no data is extracted from systems running genuine copies of the game, and says that this only takes place temporarily. Despite this, however, FSLabs has released a new installer that does not include the controversial password-stealing file.

“While the majority of our customers understand that the fight against piracy is a difficult and ongoing battle that sometimes requires drastic measures, we realise that a few of you were uncomfortable with this particular method which might be considered to be a bit heavy handed on our part,” Kalamaras said.

The FSLabs founder, however, hasn’t addressed more important questions, as to what happens with users’ data after it’s uploaded to their own servers, and how exactly the whole thing happens, especially if any encryption system is being used.

In the meantime, some users are asking for refunds invoking the breaking of trust as the main reason, but it turns out that the company replies to customers to inform them that the installed has been updated without directly issuing a refund.

BRITAIN is about to enter a deep freeze caused by a rare weather phenomenon forecast to send temperatures into free-fall this week.   A blast of freezing Siberian air is being blown towards the UK by an unusual weather event over the North Pole dubbed Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

The Met Office has confirmed the onset of SSW, which pushes freezing air towards the UK thanks to surging temperatures in stratosphere over the North Pole.

The process causes the polar vortex – a mass of cold air in the upper atmosphere – to split, giving rise to brutally cold conditions in Britain, Europe and the US.

Forecasters believe the cold snap caused by SSW could freeze the UK for weeks with sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow well into March.

A barrage of snow and lows of -22C were recorded when SSW occurred ahead of the cold snap of December 2010.

The phenomenon last happened in 2013, when a big chill gripped the UK throughout March and into April.

Aidan McGivern, spokesperson for the Met Office, said: “The sudden stratospheric warming means that the weather conditions are somewhat unknown, but it is likely going to get much colder.”

Conditions improved over the weekend with spells of sunshine, clear skies and highs of 13C providing welcome respite from the cold.

Milder, more settled conditions will continue in the coming days with a chance of rain in Northern Ireland and northern England.
