Researchers said they found cyptojacking code hidden on the Los Angeles Times’ interactive Homicide Report webpage that was quietly harnessing visitors’ CPUs to mine Monero cryptocurrency.

The cryptojacking incident was found by Troy Mursch, a security researcher at Bad Packets Report, on Wednesday. He said the cryptominer has since been killed off. The cryptominer in question was made by Coinhive, a company that offers a Monero JavaScript miner to websites as a nontraditional way to monetize website content.

Coinhive’s JavaScript miner software is often used by hackers, who secretly embed the code into websites and then mine Monero currency by tapping the CPU processing power of site visitors’ phones, tablets and computers.

Mursch told Threatpost that in the case of the LA Times the miner was throttled so that it had a reduced impact on visitors’ CPUs and would be harder to detect. Typically, cryptojacking attacks are not throttled and use 100 percent of the target’s CPU. As a result victims can sometimes experience overheating of their phone or computer as their device gets bogged down by an over-taxed processor.

“Depending on the throttle amount, the impact [on visitors’ CPUs] can vary greatly,” Mursch told Threatpost. “In the case with the LA Times website, it was throttled so low the average user probably wouldn’t notice it running in the background.”

That method appeared to have worked and kept the code secret for awhile. Mursch estimates the cyptojacking JavaScript code was hidden on the website since at least Feb. 9.

Mursch said he found the code after investigating an LA Times’ Amazon AWS S3 storage bucket that was misconfigured and giving anyone – including criminal cyptocurrency miners – the ability to write code to the server and the Homicide Report website.

The LA Times did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the security researcher, the Coinhive cryptomining software found on the LA Times’ websites has surreptitiously been used many times before both on UK and US government sites as well as other news publication sites. Earlier this week, vehicle maker Tesla reportedly fell victim to a cryptocurrency mining attack when misconfigured Amazon S3 buckets allowed criminals to plant cryptoming malware on the company’s cloud environment, according to researchers at RedLock.

“No one knows who this individual is, however Coinhive has claimed they terminated them,” said Mursch.

In order to prevent these types of incidents, Mursch recommended that companies properly secure their cloud services and set up some sort of monitoring for all their services.

“In the case of the LA Times and many others, the easiest prevention method is to ensure your cloud services, such as AWS, are properly secured,” he said. “In the LA Times case, it appears anyone could write to their AWS bucket which in turn led to the cryptojacking code being placed by miscreants.”

Graham counselled presidents and preached to millions across the world from his native North Carolina to communist North Korea during his 70 years on the pulpit. He died on Wednesday morning at his home in Montreat, according to a spokesperson for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

The Southern Baptist minister, who provided special counsel to presidents from Harry Truman to Barack Obama, long suffered from cancer, pneumonia and other ailments. 

Over his lifetime, Graham reached more than 200 million through his pioneering use of prime-time telecasts, network radio, daily newspaper columns, evangelistic feature films and globe-girdling satellite TV hookups. Graham's message was not complex or unique, yet he preached with a conviction that won over audiences worldwide.

His message and service to presidents, also including Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush, earned him the nickname America's Pastor.

'God has his people in all churches'
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan gave Graham the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honour.

When the Billy Graham Museum and Library was dedicated in 2007 in Charlotte, former presidents George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton attended.

"When he prays with you in the Oval Office or upstairs in the White House, you feel he's praying for you, not the president," Clinton said at the ceremony.

Born Nov. 7, 1918, on his family's dairy farm near Charlotte, N.C., Graham came from a fundamentalist background that expected true Bible believers to stay clear of Christians with even the most minor differences over Scripture. But as his crusades drew support from a widening array of Christian churches, he came to reject that view.

He joined in a then emerging movement called New Evangelicalism, which abandoned the narrowness of fundamentalism to engage broader society. Fundamentalists at the time excoriated the preacher for his new direction, and broke with him when he agreed to work with more liberal Christians in the 1950s.

"The ecumenical movement has broadened my viewpoint and I recognize now that God has his people in all churches," he said in the early 1950s.

In 1957, he said, "I intend to go anywhere, sponsored by anybody, to preach the gospel of Christ."

'Finally gave in' at the 18th hole
His approach helped evangelicals gain the influence they have today. Graham's path to becoming an evangelist began taking shape at age 16, when the Presbyterian-reared farm boy committed himself to Christ at a local tent revival.

"I did not feel any special emotion," he wrote in his 1997 autobiography, Just As I Am.

"I simply felt at peace," he wrote, and thereafter, "the world looked different."

After high school, he enrolled at the fundamentalist Bob Jones College, but found the school stifling and transferred to Florida Bible Institute in Tampa, where he practised sermonizing in a swamp, preaching to birds and alligators before tryouts with small churches. He still wasn't convinced he should be a preacher until a soul-searching, late-night ramble on a golf course.

"I finally gave in while pacing at midnight on the 18th hole," he said. "'All right, Lord,' I said, 'If you want me, you've got me."'

A 1949 Los Angeles revival turned Graham into evangelism's rising star. The publicity gave him a national profile.

Over the next decade, his massive crusades in England and New York catapulted him to international celebrity. His 12-week London campaign in 1954 defied expectations, drawing more than two million people and the respect of the British, many of whom had derided him before his arrival as little more than a slick salesman.

Three years later, he held a crusade in New York City's Madison Square Garden that was so popular, it was extended from six to 16 weeks, capped off with a rally in Times Square that packed Broadway with more than 100,000 people.

'I would like to have done more'
As his public influence grew, the preacher's stands on the social issues of his day were watched closely by supporters and critics alike.

One of the most pressing was the civil rights movement. Graham was no social activist and never joined marches, which led prominent Christians such as theologian Reinhold Niebuhr to publicly condemn Graham as too moderate.

Still, Graham ended racially segregated seating at his Southern crusades in 1953, a year before the Supreme Court's school integration ruling, and long refused to visit South Africa while its white regime insisted on racially segregated meetings.

In a 2005 interview with The Associated Press, before his final crusade which was held in New York, Graham said he regretted that he didn't battle for civil rights more forcefully.

"I think I made a mistake when I didn't go to Selma" with many clergy who joined the historic Alabama march led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. "I would like to have done more."

As America's most famous religious leader, he golfed with statesmen and entertainers, and dined with royalty. Graham's relationships with presidents also boosted his ministry and became a source of pride for conservative Christians who were so often caricatured as backward.

'The secret of my work is God'
But those ties proved problematic when close friend Richard Nixon resigned as president because of the Watergate scandal, leaving Graham devastated and baffled. He resolved to take a lower profile in the political world, going as far as discouraging Rev. Jerry Falwell, a founder of the Moral Majority, from mixing religion and politics.

While he succeeded in preserving his reputation, he could not completely shield his family from the impact of his work. He was on the road for months at a time, leaving his wife at their mountainside home in Montreat to raise their five children. His wife, Ruth, died in 2007.

Anne Graham Lotz has said that her mother was effectively "a single parent." Ruth sometimes grew so lonely when Billy was travelling that she slept with his tweed jacket for comfort. But she said, "I'd rather have a little of Bill than a lot of any other man."

"I will miss her terribly," Billy Graham said, "and look forward even more to the day I can join her in heaven."

Graham will be buried at the Billy Graham Museum and Library.

"I have been asked, 'What is the secret?"' Graham had said of his preaching. "Is it showmanship, organization or what? The secret of my work is God. I would be nothing without Him."

Facebook dramatically loses lawsuit and could end up facing total fines of some $156,000,000 (100 million euro) if it continues to break the country’s privacy laws by tracking its users on third-party websites.
The high profile case against the social-media giant was brought by Belgium’s privacy watchdog, who claimed that Facebook was acting illegally by tracking web users without their explicit consent even after they opened new webpages.

The court based its verdict on evidence presented by the Belgium watchdog into Facebook’s use of tracking scripts, cookies, plugins, invisible pixels and Like buttons.


Facebook have been fined for tracking anyone who uses their website and storing that information.

Tracking data
It is understood that Facebook had collected tracking information on everyone who used its website, regardless of whether they had an account or not.

Anouk Devenyns, the judge in the case said: “The court has comes to the conclusion that Facebook does not inform us enough about the fact that it collects information about us… There’s too much uncertainty about the nature of the information it collects, what happens to that information and how long the company stores that information.”

The original probe by the Belgium watchdog took place in 2015. The court verdict also stated that Facebook has run afoul of European Union privacy laws as well.

$310,000 a day
As a result of the court case, Facebook can now face a fine of up to $310,000 a day, until it complies totally with Belgium’s ‘General Data Protection Regulation’ and deletes the now ‘illegal’ user collected data.

As a further consequence of the court ruling, Facebook has also been ordered to publish the complete court verdict on its website for all to see. “We’ll comply with this new law, just as we’ve complied with existing data protection law in Europe,” said a spokesperson for Facebook.

Appeal
The company isn’t happy with the decision though, and has said it will appeal.

Richard Allan, the company’s vice-president of public policy in Europe said that “the cookies and pixels we use are industry standard technologies, and enable hundreds of thousands of businesses to grow their businesses and reach customers across the EU.”

After revealing an Edge browser vulnerability that Microsoft failed to fix, Google is now back with another disclosure, this time aimed at Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), but potentially affecting other Windows versions as well.

James Forshaw, a security researcher that’s part of Google’s Project Zero program, says the elevation of privilege vulnerability can be exploited because of the way the operating system handles calls to Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC).

This means a standard user could obtain administrator privileges on a Windows 10 computer, which in the case of an attack, could eventually lead to full control over the impacted system.

But as Neowin noted, this is the second bug discovered in the same function, and both of them, labeled as 1427 and 1428, were reported to Microsoft on November 10, 2017. Microsoft said it fixed them with the release of the February 2018 Patch Tuesday updates, yet as it turns out, only issue 1427 was addressed.

Can’t be exploited remotely
Though the vulnerability remains unpatched, it’s important to note that Microsoft doesn’t consider it to be a Critical bug, having rated it instead as Important. According to the researcher, this is because exploiting the vulnerability involves additional steps and cannot take place remotely, unless the attacker previously obtained access to the target systems by taking advantage of another flaw.

“In order to execute the exploit you'd have to already be running code on the system at a normal user privilege level. It cannot be attacked remotely (without attacking a totally separate unfixed issue to get remote code execution), and also cannot be used from a sandbox such as those used by Edge and Chrome. The marking of this issue as High severity reflects the ease of exploitation for the type of issue, it's easy to exploit, but it doesn't take into account the prerequisites to exploiting the issue in the first place,” Forshaw says.

The next Windows security updates will ship on March 13 as part of the upcoming Patch Tuesday cycle, but with the vulnerability already public, Microsoft might hurry up and publish an out-of-band fix for impacted Windows versions sooner.
