Join for free, complete campaigns, and earn rewards
Jul 14, 2022 14:03 GMT  ·  By Cosmin Vasile  ·      After revealing new titles coming to PS Plus Extra and Premium next week, Sony has taken the wraps off PlayStation Stars, a new initiative aimed to turn casual players into loyal fans. The new program will be launched later this year, but it’s unclear where exactly it will be available.

What we do know is that players will be able to join for free and earn rewards by completing campaigns and a variety of activities. Sony’s upcoming “Monthly Check-In” campaign will require players to play any game to receive a reward, while other campaigns will require players to win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster titles in their local time zone.

The bottom line is all PlayStation Stars members will have multiple chances to earn loyalty points, which can then be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products. Also, as an additional benefit, PS Plus members enrolled in the program will automatically earn points for purchases on PlayStation Store.

These surely sound like NFTs, but they might not be. As part of PlayStation Stars, Sony will launch a new type of reward called “digital collectibles.” There will be many of these depicting some of the most popular products and franchises from Sony’s portfolio. These digital collectibles may include figurines of iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as “cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation.”

PlayStation Stars will be launched later this year in phased regional rollouts, which suggests that it won’t be limited to the United States. The program is meant to continue to evolve after launch if it proves to be a success. Although the program seems awfully similar to Microsoft Rewards, it’s not like the Redmond-based company invented the typical loyalty program, so it’s absolutely fine for Sony to offer fans something in return for being loyal.
