April 13, 2023 10:27 AM      Poland's Military Counterintelligence Service and its Computer Emergency Response Team have linked APT29 state-sponsored hackers, part of the Russian government's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), to widespread attacks targeting NATO and European Union countries.

As part of this campaign, the cyberespionage group (also tracked as Cozy Bear and Nobelium) aimed to harvest information from diplomatic entities and foreign ministries.

"At the time of publication of the report, the campaign is still ongoing and in development," an advisory published today warns.

"The Military Counterintelligence Service and CERT.PL recommend all entities which may be in the area of interest of the actor to implement mechanisms aimed at improving the security of IT Security systems in use and increasing the detection of attacks."

The attackers have targeted diplomatic personnel using spear phishing emails impersonating European countries' embassies with links to malicious websites or attachments designed to deploy malware via ISO, IMG, and ZIP files.

Websites controlled by APT29 infected victims with the EnvyScout dropper via HTML smuggling, which helped deploy downloaders known as SNOWYAMBER and QUARTERRIG and designed to deliver additional malware, as well as a CobaltStrike Beacon stager named HALFRIG.

SNOWYAMBER and QUARTERRIG were used for reconnaissance to help the attackers evaluate each target's relevance and determine whether they compromised honeypots or VMs used for malware analysis.

"If the infected workstation passed manual verification, the aforementioned downloaders were used to deliver and start-up the commercial tools COBALT STRIKE or BRUTE RATEL," a separate malware analysis report released today reads.

"HALFRIG, on the other hand, works as a so-called loader – it contains the COBALT STRIKE payload and runs it automatically."  APT29 is the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) hacking division which was also linked to the SolarWinds supply-chain attack that led to the compromise of multiple U.S. federal agencies three years ago.

Since then, the hacking group has breached other organizations' networks using stealthy malware that remained undetected for years, including a new malware tracked as TrailBlazer and a variant of the GoldMax Linux backdoor.

Unit 42 has also observed the Brute Ratel adversarial attack simulation tool being used in attacks suspected to be linked to the Russian SVR cyber spies.

More recently, Microsoft reported that the APT29 hackers are using new malware capable of hijacking Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) to log in as anyone in Windows systems.

They've also targeted Microsoft 365 accounts in NATO countries in attempts to access foreign policy information and orchestrated a wave of phishing campaigns targeting governments, embassies, and high-ranking officials across Europe.

April 14, 2023 02:00 PM        Google has released an emergency Chrome security update to address the first zero-day vulnerability exploited in attacks since the start of the year.

"Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-2033 exists in the wild," the search giant said in a security advisory published on Friday.

The new version is rolling out to users in the Stable Desktop channel, and it will reach the entire user base over the coming days or weeks.

Chrome users should upgrade to version 112.0.5615.121 as soon as possible, as it addresses the CVE-2023-2033 vulnerability on Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.

This update was immediately available when BleepingComputer checked for new updates from the Chrome menu > Help > About Google Chrome.

The web browser will also automatically check for new updates and install them without requiring user interaction after a restart.  Attack details not yet disclosed
The high-severity zero-day vulnerability (CVE-2023-2033) is due to a high-severity type confusion weakness in the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine.

The bug was reported by Clement Lecigne of Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG), whose primary goal is to defend Google customers from state-sponsored attacks.

Google TAG frequently discovers and reports zero-day bugs exploited in highly-targeted attacks by government-sponsored threat actors aiming to install spyware on devices of high-risk individuals, including journalists, opposition politicians, and dissidents worldwide.

Although type confusion flaws would generally allow attackers to trigger browser crashes after successful exploitation by reading or writing memory out of buffer bounds, threat actors can also exploit them for arbitrary code execution on compromised devices.

While Google said it knows of CVE-2023-2033 zero-day exploits used in attacks, the company has yet to share further information regarding these incidents.

"Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix," Google said.

"We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven't yet fixed."

This will allow Google Chrome users to upgrade their browsers and block attack attempts until technical details are released, allowing more threat actors to develop their own exploits.

Windscribe did not acquire WeVPN, both firms confirmed        Virtual Private Network (VPN) service provider WeVPN is shutting down, the company confirmed in a short statement published on its website. Users who still have active subscriptions will be able to use a different provider for the time that remains, free of charge.

In the statement, WeVPN said that it was forced to close shop “due to unforeseen financial difficulties”. No further details were given.

Users with active subscriptions can migrate to Windscribe, the company said, saying that people’s privacy is guaranteed.

Not an acquisition
“We understand the importance of maintaining your privacy and online security, which is why we have reached out to Windscribe, a leading VPN provider, to assist our customers during this challenging time,” the announcement reads.

"Windscribe has graciously agreed to offer free accounts to all WeVPN users for the remaining duration of their WeVPN subscription. By taking advantage of this offer, you will gain access to Windscribe's extensive network of servers, robust security features, and excellent customer support."

It also explained to customers "that by participating in this offer, you understand and accept that WeVPN will not be responsible for any other form of compensation for this inconvenience."  Windscribe did not acquire WeVPN, both companies confirmed: “While this is not an official partnership, we are confident that Windscribe will provide you with the quality VPN experience you have come to expect from WeVPN,” the company said.

In an FAQ posted on Windscribe’s Reddit page, a company representative said “we have not purchased WeVPN in any capacity. We have not paid any money, or are receiving any compensation from WeVPN for this. This is purely a gesture of good will championed by our founder Yegor.”

Windscribe will cover people’s WeVPN accounts for three months up to two years, the company also said. “If your time with WeVPN was purchased from a specific promotion (lifetime, etc.) we are unable to provide that amount of time here.”

Europol Recommends Antivirus for Everyone after Genesis Takedown

April 06, 2023          After the trumpeted takedown of the Genesis cybercrime hub, Europol is advising everyone everywhere to deploy an antivirus on their devices.

Operation Cookie Monster, years in the making, ended this week with 119 arrests, 208 property searches and 97 knock-and-talk measures, the seizure of multiple domains, and the takedown of the Genesis underworld marketplace itself.

As Europol itself notes, the Genesis Market’s main commodity was digital identities.

“This marketplace would offer for sale what the market owners referred to as ‘bots’ that had infected victims’ devices through malware or account takeovers attacks,” the law enforcement body said.

Device fingerprinting

Using a bot, criminals could mimic the victim’s browser ‘fingerprint’, cookies, saved logins and autofill form data, and pass for the real account owner – including bypassing multi-factor authentication.

This information was collected in real time, with the buyer receiving notifications of any change of passwords or other fingerprinting data. In other words, even if the victim changed their passwords, hackers could still obtain their new credentials and keep impersonating them.

Given the platform’s popularity among cybercriminals and its key role in aiding cybercrime, including ransomware, the takedown of Genesis Market was a huge priority for international law enforcement.

‘Use antivirus software on all your electronic devices’

Europol is taking this opportunity to highlight how important it has become for the general public to take cybersecurity seriously.

“With over 1.5 million bots listed on Genesis Market, chances are that your credentials have already ended up for sale on this criminal marketplace,” the announcement stresses.

The Euro cops’ memo includes the following recommendations:

·      Use antivirus software on all your electronic devices

·      Keep your software updated, including your browser, antivirus and operating system

·      Browse and download only official versions of software and always from trusted websites

·      Be wary while browsing the internet and do not click on suspicious links, pop-ups or dialog boxes

·      Think twice before clicking on links or attachments

·      Set up unique passwords

·      Enable multi-factor authentication for all of your accounts
