Chinese App Developers Hit Apple's Money Jackpot
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-12-2016 , 01:16 AM - Forum: Phones & Tablets News - No Replies

Uncork the champagne, because it's raining cash for mobile app developers in China.

Apple's chief marketing officer Phil Schiller reportedly revealed during his China visit that Apple has allocated USD5 billion App Store profit share to Chinese developers.

According to reports in Chinese local media, he also said that many of the most downloaded applications in the App Store were created by Chinese developers.
During Apple's earnings conference held in October 2015, the company disclosed that the number of developers in China topped over one million. Schiller mentioned this figure at an interview again and said Chinese developers' achievement is unprecedented.

So far, Chinese developers have launched 270,000 apps in the App Store. Among the top downloading locations around the world, App Store's operating revenue in China ranked third, following the U.S. and Japan.

Apart from the App Store business, Schiller revealed the company's retail store expansion plan in Greater China. He said that there were five new Apple Stores opening in January 2016, covering cities like Shenyang, Nanjing, Xiamen, and Guangzhou.

Dell Needs to Know If You Want to Upgrade the Firmware from Linux Systems
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-11-2016 , 07:13 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

The company has an online poll for Linux users

Dell wants to provide support for upgrading the firmware for its products from Linux systems, but the company wants to focus its efforts in the right direction and is trying to gather more data with an online poll.

Most computers out there right now, whether they are PCs or laptops, can only be upgraded with Windows tools or from Windows systems. This is a direct consequence of the fact that Windows has a big sleeve of the PC market, and companies are simply not interested in building tools for Linux users.

Most of the firmware updates are hardware agnostic, meaning that it shouldn't be a problem to upgrade the BIOS, for example, from any kind of OS. The fact that you can only do this from Windows systems is just a measure of the popularity of Windows. It also helps that hardware makers don't have to do a lot of work.

A single online repository for firmware

A solution to this problem is to get hardware makers to make their firmware updates available to Linux users through an online repository that can be used in pretty much any kind of Linux OS. Dell, Red Hat, Intel, Canonical, and others interested parties are working on a solution named Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS).

All is nice and well, at least in theory, but Dell needs to know if users are actually interested in this feature, what kind of hardware are they using, how many Linux products are people using, and if the presence of such a feature would influence the decision to purchase hardware.

For now, only the upcoming Dell Edge Gateway 5000 will support this kind of firmware upgrade, and if people don't show enough interest in the service, it might also be the last product to do so.

Amazon India no longer allows buyers to return phones for a refund
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-11-2016 , 06:55 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

Amazon India has announced a rather unwelcome change to its Return Policy.

The online retailer will no longer allows buyers to return Phones which they bought from its e-store.
You won't get a refund for the phone you bought, but you can get a replacement phone, if the one you bought is defective. And the replacement policy is only valid for 10-days from the delivery date of the phone.
More specifically, this change affects the Amazon Fulfilled phones only. So you could still return a phone to a seller, if the product is not fulfilled by Amazon India. But these devices are quite limited, and usually most sellers don't give a refund that easily. The reasoning behind the move is quite simple. People were misusing the Return Policy to send back the new phones after using them for a few days, even when the phone was not defective. So the seller and Amazon India had to bear the cost of the restocking fee (most likely sell them at a lower price as a refurbished phone) and the shipping fee respectively.
This is what the new Returns Policy on Amazon India's webpage states:

Quote: All Mobile phones that are fulfilled by Amazon, purchased on or after 7th February 2016, will have a replacement only policy. Mobile phone items that are fulfilled by Amazon will no longer be eligible for refunds. In case you have received a defective or a damaged mobile phone, you will be eligible for a free replacement.

It is because of a few unfair customers, that the rest of India has to suffer. But it is quite far to the seller, and the OEM. The 10-day replacement policy however, is a bit unfair to the buyer. Sometimes phones may stop working after 10-15 days, in which case, it will have to be sent for a warranty repair service instead, which usually, is a tedious experience in our Country.

This new transmitter could reportedly make your Wi-Fi connection 10 times faster
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-11-2016 , 05:34 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

Japanese researchers have announced that they've developed a new transmitter that can beam data at an incredible 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) - a connection speed that would let you download a Blu-ray film in a couple of seconds.

The transmitter works by sending data out at much higher frequencies than current routers, using the unchartered terahertz (THz) band to reach speeds close to those achieved by optical fibre.

Before you get too excited, the new technology and its alleged speeds haven't been peer-reviewed as yet. But if the reports are anything to go by, the transmitter could be the key to achieving Wi-Fi connections 10 times faster than is possible with existing technology.

To understand why the new transmitter is so fast, you need to know a little bit about how Wi-Fi works. Put very simply, our routers send out data as electromagnetic waves that are picked up by our computers and then converted back into information. Voila, you have an Internet connection!

Electromagnetic waves come in all different lengths, but our current transmitters send out waves in the gigahertz (GHz) band - around the 5 GHz range for standard routers, and up to 60 GHz for high-speed LAN connections.

The higher the frequency, the shorter the waves are, and, generally, the faster the connection. And the Japanese team have now reportedly managed to send out waves that are less than a millimetre in length - a frequency way up in the 275 to 305 GHz range.

Once you get up over that 300 mark, you're in the THz band, which is a benefit in itself, because that band is a whole lot less crowded. It's like being able to get from New York to London quicker simply by flying over the top of all the other aircraft traffic.

The researchers say they were able to achieve speeds of 100 Gbps across multiple channels using this THz band, but with further tweaking, they believe that could be pushed up into the terabit per second range.

"Today, we usually talk about wireless data-rates in megabits per second or gigabits per second. But I foresee we'll soon be talking about terabits per second," said lead researcher Minoru Fujishima from Hiroshima University. "That's what THz  wireless technology offers."

"Such extreme speeds are currently confined in optical fibres," he added. "I want to bring fibre-optic speeds out into the air, and we have taken an important step toward that goal."

Of course, there are limitations to the THz band. Not only is it hard to develop transmitters that use these short waves, but, in general, these high-frequency signals have a shorter range and are less able to penetrate objects.

There's not a whole lot of detail on how this new transmitter will stack up when it comes to real-world applications - assumedly because the researchers are working with Panasonic, who would want to protect their new IP - but we do know it's been made using silicon, which means it could be easily integrated into today's technology.

The researchers also explained that the 100 Gbps speed was achieved using quadrature amplitude modulation - something that's commonly used now to enhance data rates within limited bandwidth.

Assuming all that checks out, the real hold up in getting these transmitters into our homes will be the fact that the THz band is still non-man's land for telecommunications. All wireless frequencies need to be allocated by the International Telecommunications Union Radiocommunication sector before they can be used commercially, and allocation won't be discussed for THz until 2019.

Hopefully that will give the researchers time to develop all the other parts they need to build a true THz wireless system.
"We plan to develop receiver circuits for the 300-GHz band as well as modulation and demodulation circuits that are suitable for ultrahigh-speed communications," explained Fujishima.

But the Japanese team isn't the only one pushing Internet speeds up - as we reported last year, light-based Internet known as Li-Fi has now been tested in the real world, and it's 100 times faster than regular Wi-FI.

Both technologies have their strengths and weaknesses, but one thing's for sure, our Internet isn't going to stay this slow for long. We can't wait.

Microsoft Relaunches Mystery Update Pushing Windows 10 on Windows 7 and 8.1
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-11-2016 , 05:30 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - Replies (2)

You might want to rehide this update once again

In addition to the security updates that Microsoft rolled out this Patch Tuesday, the company has also released a handful of non-security updates that bring new functionality on Windows computers.

But what’s more worrying for some Windows 7 and 8.1 users is that the company has re-released the mystery KB3123862 update that seems to be pushing harder for the Windows 10 upgrade on these computers.

As we told you last week, when the KB3123862 patch first showed up, Microsoft only says little about the update, which could make some people worry that it’s related to the way the Windows 10 upgrade might be pushed to their PCs.

"Improved upgrade experience for Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs"

And undoubtedly, this update is related to the Windows 10 upgrade experience, but it’s not yet known in what way. Microsoft only says that this “update adds capabilities to some computers that lets users easily learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10,” so it’s hard to tell what changes it could make to your PC.

And on this month’s Patch Tuesday (February 10), the company re-released the update, and as you can see in the screenshot included in the article, it’s already at version 3.0.

What this means is yet to be determined because nobody knows for sure what are the updates that Microsoft implemented with this new version, but if you just want to stick with Windows 7 or 8.1 for now, it might be a good idea to hide this update and avoid installing it until more information surfaces.

The Windows 10 upgrade will continue to be available for these users completely free of charge until July 29, 2016, so there’s still enough time to install it if you wish to delay the move a little bit longer. Hiding the update can be done from Windows Update > right-click on the KB3123862 patch > Hide update.

Microsoft Says Windows 10 Can Block Anyone from Spying on Governments
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-11-2016 , 05:27 PM - Forum: Security News - Replies (1)

Redmond bets big on government adoption of Windows 10

In addition to consumers, who are currently under strong pressure from Microsoft to upgrade to Windows 10, the Redmond-based software giant is also targeting governments around the world with its new operating system.

In a new post today, Microsoft’s Mandy Tidwell, Windows Technology Solution Professional, State & Local Government, explains that Windows 10 offers a very advanced security system to governments, citing the modern approach to user identity, the enhanced protection against malware, and the simplified spyware detection and removal as the main capabilities.

“Windows 10 has been designed to address security threats in a world of escalating risks. As we were building Windows 10, security was a prime focus. And we’ve incorporated several innovative technologies into our new operating system to protect governments against both current and future threats,” Tidwell explains in a post today.

“Windows 10 is our best Windows yet, and the security it provides is no exception. As governments work to keep their information safe, Windows 10 is right there beside them, helping to protect them against the most nefarious threats.”

Russia and China beg to differ
Interestingly, Microsoft’s post on government security comes only a day after news regarding Russia’s initiative to move to Linux made the headlines.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s new Internet advisor is reportedly planning to push the transition off Windows and move municipal governments to Linux, as they want to have full control of the technologies in use and block any hacking attempts that might be started by overseas states through Microsoft software.

Last year, China decided to ban Windows 8 on government computers, in a similar attempt to switch to Linux. Local officials were said to push for Linux adoption in several state departments, as Windows 8 was believed to be a threat to national security because the United States could have used it to steal documents and country’s secrets.

Right now, Microsoft is trying to fight all this criticism and prove everyone that Windows 10 is the more secure option available right now, and its transparency centers are playing a key role in this. It remains to be seen, however, if this can stop the transition of governments to Linux.
