A tsunami warning has been issued in California after an offshore earthquake measuing 7.0 on the Richter scale has been detected.
The quake was recorded 60 miles off the coast of northern California at around 11am local time on Thursday, the US National Tsunami Centre reported.
Tremors were felt widely across the north of the state and as far south as San Francisco, where residents experienced a rolling motion followed by several aftershocks.
People in the Santa Cruz area received a with a tsunami warning from the National Weather Service on their phones which read: ‘A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now. Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.’
Berkley police department have also issued an evacuation order after telling residents: ‘People in the Tsunami Zone are in IMMEDIATE DANGER and MUST EVACUATE NOW. Stay east of 7th St. This is a lawful order to leave now.’
California governor Gavin Newson has been briefed on the situation and is ‘meeting with state emergency officials and working to ensure Californians are safe,’ his office announced in a post on X.
No immediate reports of damage have been recorded yet.
