Opinion by Sabrina Maddeaux • 5h ago        The Liberals’ picking Hillary Clinton to headline their national convention was nothing short of an inspired choice — although perhaps not in the way they intended.

While I presume her discussion with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was meant to embody the Liberals’ self-avowed commitment to feminist and democratic ideals, it instead epitomized the ways in which they’re increasingly out of touch.

It’s difficult to imagine a political party elsewhere inviting a foreign politician to play such a prominent role in its signature summit. But unlike many prior Liberal governments, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals never had a vision for a strong and proud Canada. Rather, they treat patriotism with suspicion and preach morality to their political advantage while squandering Canada’s international reputation for real moral leadership.

It’s this ironic lack of esteem for the country they govern that led them to think importing an American politician for their convention was a great idea. While Liberals love to accuse Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of negativity, a cynical take on what it means to be Canadian is core to the Trudeau ideology. Now, many voters are itching for a more patriotic tune.

Another fallacy central to the Liberal ethos exemplified by the conversation between Freeland and Clinton: that symbolic feminism is the real deal. Whether it’s Trudeau calling himself a feminist, his gender-balanced cabinet, or convenient rethinking of his own stance on abortion just in time to weaponize it as a wedge issue against Conservatives, the Liberals are much better at talking about equity than putting it into practice.

Trudeau’s support for strong women, and women in his cabinet, only lasts as long as they allow him to do whatever the heck he pleases. His conviction about a woman’s right to choose disappears between election cycles and stops well short of ensuring access.    So it’s fitting Clinton is practically the patron saint of false feminist idols. There’s a reason her attempt to rebrand as a women’s rights hero never connected with American voters, particularly young females . In the Democratic primary, women under 45 flocked to support not her, but Bernie Sanders.

Whether it was her complicity in throwing Monica Lewinsky under the bus, her close association with Harvey Weinstein, or her support of many policies that hurt women over the years, the gap between Clinton’s behaviour and her words was simply too large to overcome. She was all cheap identity politics, no substance. Canadian voters are rightfully becoming more and more aware that the same is true of Trudeau’s Liberals.

Recently, since her loss to Donald Trump, Clinton has once again reimagined herself. This time, as a beacon for democracy. Nevermind the many irregularities of the 2016 Democratic primary process and allegations of internal corruption that led to her win. The Clintons’ raison d’etre has always been power, not purpose — and a belief that they are America’s natural governing couple.

The same is often said of the Liberal Party, who have a similar habit of doing away with democratic tenets, like free expression, when it best suits them. A tendency to choose censorship over debate, opacity over transparency and favoured friends over the public interest is catching up with them in the polls.

Rather than amplify the Liberals’ strengths, Clinton reflected their greatest weaknesses. She was the perfect mirror for a party that desperately needs to take a long, hard look at themselves if they want any hope of winning the next election.
