CURSED BE THE CHOICE…
London, 1918. You are newly-turned Vampyr Dr. Jonathan Reid. As a doctor, you must find a cure to save the city’s flu-ravaged citizens. As a Vampyr, you are cursed to feed on those you vowed to heal. Will you embrace the monster within? Your actions will save or doom London.

If you are stepping into Vampyr thinking it’s going to be a heavy action title, I need to temper your expectations. Vampyr is, at its core, an Action/RPG. You will spend a lot of time talking to patients and passers by, solving their problems in exchange for trinkets and experience. As you talk to a local resident, they may reveal that their landlord is fleecing them for rent. Finding that landlord, you could mesmerize them (if your Mesmer level is higher than their resistance level) and lure them to a dark corner to feed upon them, but that could have dire consequences his tenants. Or, it could result in them being charged no rent whatsoever. The best parts of Vampyr is that it’s often hard to predict the lasting effects, even if the surface outcomes are apparent.

One of the major gameplay loops in Vampyr is dealing with the medical maladies that plague the streets of London. During conversation, you can check on a person’s physical state and give them medicines you’ve prepared back at the hospital. This improves the quality of their blood, which will yield higher XP amounts, but it also improves their health, which will obviously help the state of that ward of the city. There are nine maladies, of which only three are known at the beginning of the game. These can range from a simple headache to anemia, sepsis, migraines, pneumonia, and worse. A simple crafting engine lets you break down things like cheap gin into a glass vial, a watch into springs, screws, and grease, and so forth. These components are used to craft the aforementioned remedies, upgrades for your weapons, and serums that can help you regenerate stamina, health, or cure toxins. Much of the recipes you’ll learn come from decisions you’ll make at crucial story junctures, so don’t obsess about guy with the migraines — you’ll fix him up (and possibly serve him up) later.

I love this simulation aspect of Vampyr: learning to live with the curse, blending in, choosing when to feed, who to spare. But it’s the bits inbetween that disappoint. For every fleshed-out NPC there’s an endless parade of vampire hunters and feral vampires to kill in dull, repetitive combat sequences. You carve through so many of these guys that it cheapens Reid’s struggles with violence elsewhere. And the combat feels weightless, twitchy, and unsatisfying, with the floaty, frustrating third-person camera frequently getting stuck in corners and on bits of scenery, obscuring the action.

In its favour, there’s a decent variety of ways to fight, from using melee weapons and guns, to more exotic vampire-related powers such as hurling spears made of blood at people and viciously clawing them to shreds. But these parts of the game are rarely more than passable, and their existence is actually to its overall detriment, feeling like a tiresome distraction. I can’t help but think that Vampyr would have been much better if the story and simulation elements were left to stand on their own—which I think they easily could have.

There’s a lot of interesting, high concept stuff in Vampyr, and I love how Dontnod has used the tropes of vampire fiction to create a simulation of life as a vampire. London makes for an atmospheric setting, with buildings looming ominously through the fog and a dark, oppressive feel to the cobbled streets. But it feels like a game at odds with itself, veering wildly from compelling, dialogue-driven storytelling, to flat, uninspiring action, and back again. I never really fell in love with Reid either, a grim, relentlessly self-serious chap whose charisma seems to have been sucked out of him along with his humanity.

Control is an acrobatic third-person shooter set in an amorphous concrete dimension infested by the sanitized office culture of a 1960s-era government bureaucracy. Aside from a poo beast, you'll discover new powers and revisit areas of The Oldest House to find upgrades, secrets, and side missions, all while throwing bullets and random objects at bad guys in Remedy's best combat system yet.

Remedy's taking a harder thwack at weird fiction than ever before, too. Despite a few weak characters and plot threads, the team succeeds. In Control, every conspiracy theory, ghost encounter, and alien abduction happened, just not quite for the reasons you'd expect. It's a collection of stories about seeing through the banality of everyday life, a story about language, mass media, and statecraft delivered with a dry sense of humor and no tether to reason. I still don't understand it. I don't need to. Bless this mess.

With a complete arsenal of abilities, I'm able to bounce around the big, multi-tiered arenas like Superman with a handgun permit. But before I found the dash and shield abilities, and before I finished enough missions to upgrade my health and energy reserves, I was too often pinned to a corner and easily overwhelmed. It doesn't take terribly long to get up to snuff, but early combat encounters are frustrating compared to what follows.

When you're fully powered-up, Remedy's love of flying objects comes to the fore. The Oldest House's tidy environments are like water. Every dash sends papers flying, coffee cups crashing. Jesse can toss any object in the environment with her brain, turning banal office spaces and retro futurist underground labs into disaster areas. Levitating pulls errant objects into Jesse's orbit, like lazy little moons: staplers, rubble, pencils, printers, corpses. Max Payne would be proud.

Control is a top-tier mess-making simulator. Jesse's telekinesis joins Half-Life 2's juiced gravity gun in the videogame physics toy hall of fame.

Sassy spell books, grumpy mentors, and goblins galore. Welcome to Mystralia!

Mages of Mystralia is a bright, colourful single-player adventure, with an engaging story, memorable characters and tricky puzzles that challenge the player to think creatively. Join Zia, a novice mage in a world where magic is outlawed, as she sets out on an epic quest to learn more about her gift and save Mystralia from the forces of evil.

Combining the talented team at Borealys Games with Ed Greenwood’s brilliant fantasy narrative, this game will definitely have you hooked from the very first spell!

The world of Mystralia is full of bright colours with a wonderful art style. The cutscenes and loading screens are filled with brilliant illustrations, and the menus are well designed with attractive flourishes that are entirely in keeping with the fantasy feel of the game. However, when the game is first loaded, the player may need to adjust the brightness settings in order to more easily see Zia against the background. The lack of contrast in some areas can make it difficult to see which direction Zia is facing, which can make a huge difference to the accuracy of the puzzle solving and combat in the game.

The sound quality of the voiceover for the opening cutscene is excellent and quickly draws you in to the mythology of Mystralia. Currently, there are some difficulties with the sound differentiation during the main game, however there is a patch coming soon to fix this.

The game map is beautifully rendered and includes snippets of lore about each of the areas you can visit, however the text is quite small even in docked mode, which can make it difficult to read. The user interface makes it easy to find your current location and the use of exclamation marks lets you know exactly where you need to go next. This can be particularly useful if you’ve been on a side quest or puzzle hunting for a while as a tool to get you back on track with the main story.
