Samsung demonstrates a prototype of 6G terahertz wireless communication with a speed

Quote:On June 16, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that the company demonstrated a 6G terahertz (THz) wireless communication prototype in cooperation with the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

At the recent IEEE International Communications Conference (ICC 2021) seminar on terahertz communications, researchers from Samsung Research Center, Samsung American Research Center, and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) introduced the possible effects of terahertz communication. The potential impact of the next generation of 6G technology demonstrates an end-to-end 140GHz wireless link using a fully digital beamforming solution.

According to Samsung Electronics, this is a prototype system with a frequency of 140GHz and a bandwidth of 2Ghz. It has achieved a real-time throughput of 6.2Gbps over a distance of 15 meters and exhibits adaptive beam control capabilities at terahertz frequencies.

It is understood that in March this year, Samsung increased the 5G test speed to 5.23Gbps. The test speed of the 6G terahertz (THz) wireless communication prototype is higher than that of 5G, but the theoretical speed of 6G is as high as 1Tbps.

LG successfully demos 6G data transmission using terahertz spectrum

LG succeeded in sending 6G terahertz wireless communication signals 100 meters in an outdoor environment in collaboration with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe's leading application-oriented research organization, in Berlin last week.

LG said it developed a new power amplifier with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in order to deliver stable communication signals at the 6G terahertz spectrum.

LG said its new amplifier can deliver a maximum output signal of 15 decibel-milliwatts for stable communication in the 155-175 gigahertz band.

LG added it also developed adaptive beamforming and high-gain antenna switching technologies for the 6G terahertz wireless communication demonstration.

LG expects 6G communication to be commercialized in 2029, with talks for standardization beginning in 2025.
