Microsoft Workers Slept in Data Centers Due to Government Lockdown
Some employees just had to work on site last year
Jun 14, 2021 19:21 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa

2020 has completely changed everything we do, from working, talking to each other, and learning, as most of the activities have simply moved to the safety of our homes as we tried to battle an invisible enemy that nobody could see coming.

And while remote working has become such a common thing overnight, it goes without saying some people out there still couldn’t give up on their office activities simply because their responsibilities required them to always be on site.

And this is the case of some Microsoft engineers who needed to make sure everything was running flawlessly in the company’s data centers, which let’s be honest, has become incredibly important especially given the entire world started working remotely and these data centers were under heavy load 24/7.
Playing the safe card

A Microsoft executive has revealed that some employees who had to work on site actually ended up sleeping in data centers because of the government lockdowns.

“I heard amazing stories about people actually sleeping in data centers. In certain countries there was huge lockdown, and so we would have our own employees choose to sleep in the data center because they were worried they’d get stuck at a roadblock, trying to go home,” Kristen Roby Dimlow, corporate vice president for total rewards, performance and human resources business insights, was quoted as saying by CNBC in a conversation with Morgan Stanley analysts Josh Baer and Mark Carlucci.

Needless to say, no further information has been provided, so we don’t know how many Microsoft employees have actually turned data centers into their new homes.

And of course, the company has remained tight-lipped as well, so it’s hard to tell how many nights these employees slept in data centers and whether special sleep conditions had been provided.
