Microsoft Makes Fun of the MacBook, Calls It a “BackBook”
Microsoft highlights Surface Pro multi form factor design
Mar 28, 2021 17:50 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa  ·        Microsoft has published a new ad to highlight the capabilities of the Surface Pro, and this time, the company has decided to put its 2-in-1 device against the model that most people see as the number one rival: the MacBook.

The only difference is that Microsoft doesn’t call it MacBook but “BackBook,” with the company showing the benefits of having a 2-in-1 form factor on a modern PC.

Unsurprisingly, the software giant explains that you can remove the screen and use it independently with touch input, which of course, is something the MacBook isn’t capable of.

Back in the days when Microsoft launched the original Surface (called Surface RT and running the now retired Windows RT), Apple itself mocked this approach, explaining that mixing a tablet and a keyboard is like putting together a refrigerator and a toaster.
2-in-1 devices and traditional laptops

While the Cupertino-based tech giant itself has embraced this idea a few years later for the iPad Pro, the MacBook still sticks with its original design, using a traditional laptop form factor without touch input. And judging from the most recent reports, Apple has no intention to steer away from this approach, so the MacBook would remain a traditional laptop going forward.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is playing on several fronts at the same time.

The Surface product lineup includes not only 2-in-1 devices like the Surface Pro and the Surface Book, but also traditional laptops, such as the Surface Laptop. The only big different versions a classic design that the Surface Laptop also allows touch input, but other than that, it comes with a traditional approach without a removable screen.

A new Surface Laptop is expected to be announced as soon as this summer, so it’ll be interesting to see how Microsoft upgrades its classic laptop.
