DELL XPS 15 (2020) REVIEW: NEW DESIGN, FAMILIAR PROBLEMS

A new look with familiar highs and familiar lows

After several years of the same stale, hefty chassis, the Dell XPS 15 finally has a new look. It’s a similar redesign to the one the XPS 13 got earlier this year, and the same caveats apply. Listed out here, the tweaks Dell has made may seem insignificant, but they add up to a machine that looks and feels like an upgrade.

The XPS 15’s base model starts at $1,299 and includes a Core i5-10300H, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, Intel UHD graphics, and a 1920 x 1200 display. This model is really for anyone who just wants to browse; if you need any sort of computing power, you’ll want to spring for the i7.

Currently, you can max the XPS out with a Core i7-10875H, 64GB of RAM, a 3840 x 2400 touchscreen, and a 2TB SSD for $2,988. Dell says there will be i9 options in the future, but I doubt I’d recommend those for most shoppers anyway. Not only will they cost more, but I have trouble believing a product this thin can really make the most of such a hefty processor without cooking itself to death.

tested a midrange model that currently costs $2,253. It includes a Core i7-10875H, 16GB of RAM (DDR4), an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, the touchscreen, and 512GB SSD. I would say this is a good configuration for most people, though you should know your storage needs; if you’ll fill 512GB quickly, it’s worth paying $100 extra for a terabyte.

As for the visible changes, the bezels are one of the most noticeable. The new XPS has received Dell’s new four-sided Infinity Edge display with bezels that are quite thin. The panel really does appear to stretch from end to end. Seeing it feels a bit like viewing a fancy OLED TV. Dell says the laptop’s screen is 5 percent larger than its predecessor’s, with a 92.9 percent screen-to-body ratio.
