Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi are the top 3 companies now
Nov 30, 2020 18:49 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa  ·    New data provided by Gartner shows that the smartphone market dropped 5.7 percent year over year in the third quarter of 2020, and it’s easy to see why.

With the world still struggling with the global health issue, few people were still interested in a new phone, and Gartner says the shipments dropped to 336 million units for the quarter.

There are signs of recovery, that’s true, but it’s pretty clear the phone market is far from returning to the pre-2020 levels.

The biggest change that happened in the third quarter of this year was Apple dropping to fourth place overall, as Xiaomi has managed to overtake its American rival for the first time.

Samsung still number one
Samsung remains the number one company with a 22 percent market share and over 80.8 million sold phones, while Huawei is the runner-up with a 14.1 percent share and 51.8 million sold phones. Xiaomi completes the top three with a 12.1 percent share and 44.4 million sold units, while Apple is fourth with 11.1 percent share and 40.5 million sold iPhones.

“Apple sold 40.5 million units in the third quarter of 2020, a decline of 0.6% as compared to 2019,” said Annette Zimmermann, research vice president at Gartner. “The slight decrease was mainly due to Apple’s delayed shipment start of its new 2020 iPhone generation, which in previous years would always start mid/end September. This year, the launch event and shipment start began 4 weeks later than usual.”

Apple could re-claim the third spot in the next quarter when the new iPhones help propel sales worldwide and thus generate additional market share. A new boost overall for the smartphone market could be recorded too, though the world is now struggling with the second wave of the health problem and more and more regions are entering a new either partial or total lockdown.
