What is Internet speed test?

Test your Internet connection bandwidth to locations around the world

Why Should I Test My Internet Speed? [Source]

A bandwidth speed test is an effective way for individuals and businesses to measure their connection. Broadband providers sell tiered packages based on speed, so it’s important to test regularly to make sure you are getting the appropriate return on investment.

For organizations that use VoIP services, reliable broadband speed is a core necessity for the daily work of every employee. From conference calls to exporting large amounts of data, the speed of your broadband connection has a huge impact on your bottom line.

Your Download Speed is Key When Enjoying Streaming Video

If you enjoy streaming video or other rich media content, the download speed is the most important data item in your speed test results. While a wired connection using an ethernet cable directly to your router or modem provides the best performance, this isn’t realistic for most households.

There are some important terms to know: [Source]

Download:

How quickly you can pull data from a server on the internet to your device.
Most connections are designed to download much faster than they upload, since the majority of online activity, like loading web pages or streaming videos, consists of downloads.

Upload:

How quickly you send data from your device to the internet.
A fast upload speed is helpful when sending large files via email, or in using video-chat to talk to someone else online (since you have to send your video feed to them).

Ping:

Also called latency, ping is the reaction time of your connection–how quickly your device gets a response after you’ve sent out a request. A fast ping means a more responsive connection, especially in applications where timing is everything (like video games).
Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms).

Packet loss:

Packet loss occurs when a packet of data being sent over the internet is not received or is incomplete.
This is described in percentage of packets lost compared to packets sent.
Packet loss in most cases is result of poor signal/line quality.
Packet loss testing is available with Speedtest desktop apps.

Jitter:

Also called Packet Delay Variation (PDV), jitter frequency is a measure of the variability in ping over time.
Jitter is not usually noticeable when reading text, but when streaming and gaming a high jitter can result in buffering and other interruptions.
Technically, this is a measure of the average of the deviation from the mean. Jitter testing is available with Speedtest desktop apps.

Mbps:

Megabits per second. This is a standard measure of internet speed

Kbps:

Kilobits per second. This older measure of internet speed is used only when needed to describe slower connections

There are many websites and software that help to check Internet speed and bandwidth

1. Speed test by Ookla

https://www.speedtest.net/

Speedtest relies on a network of over 5,500 host servers owned and operated by internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile carriers around the globe. By default, Speedtest chooses a nearby server with a fast ping result, trying to reach the maximum potential of your internet connection.

It has online service and many apps for mobile devices and windows

SPEEDTEST VPN:

This is a new feature added by Ookla to the speed test app. Speedtest VPN ensures your online privacy and security from the convenience of your Speedtest mobile application. Get started securing your connection with 2 GB of free data over VPN per month or upgrade to Premium for unlimited data protection. Speedtest VPN is currently available for iOS and Android mobile devices in 17 languages.

Results history can be checked on the speed test app and will let you check your bandwidth at different time points

2. Fast.com

https://fast.com/

FAST.com speed test gives you an estimate of your current Internet speed. You will generally be able to get this speed from leading Internet services, which use globally distributed servers.

To calculate your Internet speed, FAST.com performs a series of downloads from and uploads to Netflix servers and calculates the maximum speed your Internet connection can provide.

Available on all devices:

FAST.com will test Internet speed globally on any device (phone, laptop, or smart TV with browser).

3. DSL Reports Speed Test:

https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

Test your download, upload and latency from a mobile phone up to optical fiber, and everything between. This test is pure HTML5

This test requires your browser's full attention for accurate results. Run the test when your network is quiet, and don't switch to other applications or change browser tabs during the test. A few Windows security and privacy software packages can block the test or slow the browser.

4. Speakeasy Speed Test:

https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

The Speakeasy Internet Speed Test is an HTML5, non-Flash bandwidth test, which checks your connection’s download and upload speeds using your browser. Our bandwidth test uses HTML5 technology and does not require any downloads to run. Bandwidth speed tests are typically used to check speed. However, our Speed Test Plus also checks line quality of the connection coming from your broadband provider.
