Three integrated search algorithms:

The three integrated search methods use different technologies for data recovery, which complement each other perfectly.

O&O UnErase:

For quick searches, you can use the search algorithm of O&O UnErase, which completes a scan for files, even on very large hard drives, in no time.

O&O FormatRecovery:

This built-in tool includes an advanced search algorithms which makes it possible to find and then ignore defective sectors. This in turn facilitates data recovery on a drive that is damaged yet still accessible.

O&O DiskRecovery:

For the sector-based deep scan, it is highly recommended to use of the search algorithms in O&O DiskRecovery. The professional deep scan offered can search every sector of a disk to find the file signatures needed and then reconstruct them. This will help you even if the entire content of the disk has been deleted, formatted, or overwritten.

Preview function:

After complete scan, you’ll be able to preview the recovered data. O&O DiskRecovery supports various picture and text formats for the preview function, including JPEG, BMP, TIFF, TXT.

Integrate data images:

Data backups created by O&O DiskImage can be integrated into O&O DiskRecovery. DiskImage creates forensic images that prevent data loss from defective hardware. Such comprehensive images also backup supposedly free disk space so that data recovery can be performed at a later date without using the original hardware.

Filter feature:

Scanning results can be filtered by size or chronology (creation/last change/last access) for increased clarity. Empty folders or files can also be hidden.

What to do when data is unintentionally lost, you will have one of two situations:

O&O DiskRecovery is already installed on your system:

If you’d like to recover data that’s been accidentally deleted, immediately stop all further write activity on the storage volume involved, because only files that have not been overwritten are capable of being accurately restored. Even looking for a suitable data recovery product on the Internet and downloading it can overwrite important data sectors and make recovering data more difficult, if not impossible. That’s why it’s so important to have O&O DiskRecovery already installed on your computer, before trouble strikes.

Using O&O DiskRecovery in an emergency Without Prior Installation:

If DiskRecovery is not already installed on your computer when you have computer problems with lost data, the instant installation is ready to help you. All you’ll need is a second computer and a removable drive (e.g., USB Stick, external hard disk). Simply, start installation on the second computer and save “Instant Installation” on the removable drive or in the network. You can then connect this drive to the target computer you need to recover data and run O&O DiskRecovery from there. That’s all!

The start medium prepared contains O&O system recovery programs that can access the Windows Registry or saved files. These programs let you recover data even if Windows is defective or no longer able to start. Doing so is very important to avoid complete installation on the target computer, which possibly overwrite important sectors of the hard disk that are needed for a restoration.

DiskRecovery 14 is very helpful in cases like these…. WHY?

Unique combination of three separate search algorithms

New signatures have been integrated into the new version 14, making it possible to recognize more than 365 different file types in over 500 versions.

Almost all Office documents up to and including version 2019 can now be recognized and recovered.

Used on individual partitions and entire disks (including SSDs) as well as on USB devices such as sticks or external hard disks.

Windows 10 compatible but it can still be installed on all Windows versions starting from Vista.

The soon to be released Admin Edition offers an option for creating its very own Windows system so that O&O DiskRecovery can be started directly from a CD or USB. This allows the program to also recover files from additional Windows file systems such as FAT, FAT32 and NTFS in all versions starting from Windows NT 4 over Windows XP up to Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019.

What to do in the event of a data loss

The areas on a hard disk or memory card where lost data is located are labeled “free“. Any write access can possibly overwrite lost data and thereby destroy it, because overwritten data cannot be restored using simple methods.

Close all programs if possible without saving any data. Any writing of data, especially temporary internet files, can result in permanent destruction of the data a user wants to recover.

Stay calm: How was the data deleted? “Normally”? If so, the data is in the Recycle Bin and can be restored.

If the data was really deleted, a data recovery program such as O&O DiskRecovery is required. This software should be downloaded and installed on a different partition from the one where data needs to be recovered

File types supported:

O&O DiskRecovery can recognize and process over 350 file types when analyzing and recovering your files. Should the file type you are looking for not be included, you have the additional option of creating a user-defined signature for that type. The program will take that file signature into account when carrying out a search and rescue.

Create your own file signatures in DiskRecovery:

To create a signature, you need a HEX Editor and three different examples of the file type you wish to search and recover. Simply; open your example files in the HEX Editor to compare them better. Compare the displayed HEX Codes from the three files and look out for identical codes. These codes can then be used as a signature. Now open DiskRecovery and select the option “Create user defined signatures” (on the start page) then assign an appropriate “File Extension” for the file signature you wish to create. Next step, you need to enter the selected string of characters into the Signature window and finally Save. The file signature will be automatically recognized. You will save it in the app installation folder to be considered in every future file recovery run.

Recover lost files:

Have you ever accidentally deleted irreplaceable photos, or worked for hours on something only to lose it? We will now show you how to recover your valuable files, quickly and easily.

First things first: stay calm! Any rash actions now can make your files unrecoverable. Providing no new data was written on to the memory card, USB stick or hard disk then there is a high likelihood that you can recover your files and documents. Writing over files means they can no longer be recovered!
Take a moment to reflect on exactly how the files were lost in the first place. If you simply deleted them then you can find your files in the Recycle bin. If so, simply open it and restore the files from there.

If your files cannot be found in the Recycle Bin then you need file recovery software program such as O&O MediaRecovery or O&O DiskRecovery. First install the software and make sure you do so onto another partition and most definitely not the one from where you wish to recover files.

Select the drive you wish to recover files/photos:

You can then select “Pictures and Documents“ under the selected disk or partition. If you have lost photos or videos from a digital camera please connect this to a USB port on your computer, wait momentarily until the system recognizes the camera then click on “Refresh drives“.  If not recognized (for example due to memory mode used) simply use external card reader over the USB port.

Select the search method you would like to use:

Depending on how the files were lost, this Window lets you select the appropriate analysis and you start by clicking on “Next”.

The search methods “FormatRecovery” and “UnErase” get information about the lost files from the file system. You can recover the file name and directory structure so long as this information is still on the storage medium or the memory card concerned.

The search method “DiskRecovery” (Deep Search) searches for signatures (file types) and is therefore very robust. Recovery of the file name is not an option. The status of each search is displayed throughout.

Additional settings (options):

The program has additional settings for scanning and recovery. These are available in Adapt settings in the recovery dialogue (see image). These are divided into two sections; namely general and file types. These two options will be help you in different ways. These will be discussed later in details

Start Search:
After you select the recovery method and adjust the additional/adaptive settings including general settings and file types you want to recover, now start search

Once the analysis is complete:

you will see an overview of the various search methods. Open the appropriate tree and select the items you wish to recover.

Preview function:

This feature is available for many file types. This means you can even see in the trial version which files and photos can be recovered from your PC or device. So say for example you want to check which pictures in the format JPG/JPEG were found by a deep search, you open the tree “O&O DiskRecovery” and select the file type JPG or JPEG. Then highlight the picture in the file list on the right hand side and click on “Preview”.

Save the files found:

If the program is not registered (in the free trial); you will be asked at this point to enter a license number. You must save the photos and documents on a different and entirely separate storage volume or partition. In our experience this works best on an external USB disk or stick.

How to optimize data search and rescue?

With O&O DiskRecovery you have a lot of control over the speed and precision of the program's operations. the more detailed you set the scan, the better the restoration results.

Please note that a complete and in-depth scan can take some time. It is possible, however, for a scan to be run completely without any user interaction. This can spare you time-consuming interaction with the computer while the scan is being run.

Additional (Adapt) Settings:

These are categorized under general and file types. The file types will show you all the file types supported by the program and can be recovered (see before). The general tab shows more options for file scanning and recovery to achieve the best results. These include:

Quicker Scanning with O&O SmartScan:

A common problem that occurs with data recovery is that not only deleted files are recovered. You have to filter through those files that already exist on your system, while looking for deleted files.
With the one-of-a kind option O&O SmartScan you can hide existing files automatically so that only deleted files are looked for and restored. This can greatly accelerate the data recovery process, depending on the settings.

You enable/disable this option in the dialogue Advanced options for the search Additonal settings/Adapt settings/General. This option is set by default.

Thorough scan with O&O DeepScan:

This option offers you the maximum search depth to rescue your data. Data will be restored to the original size. You can recover very small files with this option If this does not

Leaving out file system with O&O RawScan:

With this built-in feature; you can restore files from partitions, which have been formatted before with a new file system (e.g. FAT and now NTFS), it  will make the program not consider this file system during file scan.

You can repeat the scan as many times as you like using different settings with no danger of data loss occurring.

O&O DiskRecovery 14 is a comprehensive recovery solution that will help you in many situations when you feel that you have lost important documents and files. It searches for and reconstructs data that was deleted or lost through software error. It scans the entire hard disk, partition or USB Stick for lost files. Usage is very intuitive, with a step-by-step wizard enabling users with little or no experience to easily recovery data they feared was lost. The free trial version lets users see before they buy just what lost data is in fact recoverable! O&O DiskRecovery also offers a portable installation which lets users install the program on a second computer or USB stick so that data recovery can be started directly from there. The important thing to remember in the event of data loss is to avoid saving anything on the disk involved. This can help avoid overwriting any deleted data.
