What type of files will it read?

It will read any type of text file (the file extension doesn't matter).  It supports Unicode, including UTF-8 (with or without BOM) and UTF-16 (big or little endian).  It also supports plain ASCII (ANSI).

TextCrawler is intended for plain/Unicode text files and doesn't currently support binary files for programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, or formats such as PDF. Modifying these files may cause data loss.
