Microsoft’s security solution gets top score in latest tests

The most recent research ran by antivirus testing organization AV-TEST revealed not only the best Windows 10 security products, but also how much Windows Defender has improved lately.

As the standard protection system in Windows 10, Windows Defender has often been considered just a very basic replacement to a third-party antivirus solution, mostly because it failed to detect threats and protect users accordingly.

This obviously convinced many people to look into third-party products, which most of the time came equipped with more advanced capabilities to block malware and prevent a series of other threats. But as it turns out, this is no longer the case, as Windows Defender itself evolved up to the point when it can be considered a powerful rival to third-party products.

The results of the latest AV-TEST antivirus evaluation shows that Windows Defender is a top product with a score of 17.5 points from a maximum of 18. This means Windows Defender got the same score as other highly-successful security solutions like Bitdefender Internet Security, Avast Free Antivirus, and AVG Internet Security.

Windows Defender got 6 points for protection, 5.5 points for performance, and another 6 points for usability.

Test results
According to detailed test results, Windows Defender managed to detect all malware samples malware attack simulation, blocking both 0-day and known forms of malware.

In terms of slowdowns caused to standard and high-end PCs, Windows Defender has managed to beat the industry average in nearly every single test. For example, it generates a slowdown of just 1 percent when copying files on a standard PC (versus 4 percent industry average), and 3 percent on a high-end PC (6 percent).

Windows Defender issued zero false warnings when visiting websites, and generated just a single false positive during a system scan in one of the two tests. The industry average, however, is 11.

Windows Defender is offered pre-installed in Windows 10, and considering these tests, it does make the operating system more secure by default. It’ll be interesting, however, to see how many people are ready to give up on their third-party security products for Windows Defender.
