“Microsoft is a first-class citizen of the OSS world”

Microsoft’s GitHub takeover has been received with mixed feelings by the developer community, and while many said this is the best way to go for the world’s largest code repository, others rushed to move their projects to alternative services.

One of those who defended Microsoft after the GitHub acquisition is none other than The Linux Foundation. In a statement published on the organization’s blog, executive director Jim Zemlin explains that Microsoft buying GitHub is actually “good news for the world of open source and we should celebrate Microsoft’s smart move.”

Zemlin then goes on to explain that taking over GitHub doesn’t mean that Microsoft buys the entire world of open-source software, noting that all developers whose projects are hosted on this platform retain their ownership of the code.

Furthermore, The Linux Foundation executive director admits that Microsoft is a completely new company these days, and the open-source push is a key part of its strategy.

“Microsoft under the leadership of Satya Nadella has now completed its transition from an adversary of open source to a first-class citizen. If you haven’t noticed, Microsoft has been opening up a ton of code and has been hiring top developers who are deeply engaged in open source,” he writes.

Microsoft to further improve GitHub
Zemlin explains that there’s no reason for the open-source community to be concerned now that Microsoft is buying GitHub, pointing out that the Redmond-based giant’s transition to OSS is a process that started a long time ago.

“This is not a sudden change. Microsoft has become a top contributor to Linux and Kubernetes, they develop and distribute Linux-based products, they open sourced .NET, and they are backers of The Linux Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, the Open Source Initiative and many similar efforts. Their commitment to open source has been active for years,” Zemlin adds.

The Linux Foundation official ends his post by emphasizing that GitHub is poised to improve under the leadership of Nat Friedman, highlighting that “open source developers changed our world.”
