Microsoft Officially Announces Windows Community Toolkit 3.0

Quote:Company says this is the largest release ever

Microsoft has recently announced what it calls “the largest update” to the Windows Community Toolkit, as it bundled several new tools aimed at developers.

Now at version 3.0, the Windows Community Toolkit integrates the necessary tools for developers to code for Windows 10, and this new version packs features that bring them in line with the improvements that are part of the April 2018 Update.

For example, in addition to Microsoft Graph, Edge WebView, and XAML improvements, this new release also includes updates for the existing controls that support both the light and dark themes, as well as updated documentation. Microsoft is also offering code examples in Visual Basic to lend a hand to developers, as well as new controls and APIs in the existing packages.

The full changelog will be published on GitHub here, and Microsoft says the list will be huge, though it goes without saying that devs will be super-excited about it.

Microsoft Edge rendering engine
One particular highlight of this release is the addition of Microsoft Edge rendering engine to .NET WinForms and WPF apps, and version 3.0 comes with several improvements in this regard.

“Working with the WebViewControl and WebView API may feel foreign to native .NET developers, so we’re building additional controls to simplify the experience and provide a more familiar environment. These controls wrap the WebViewControl to enable the control feel more like a native .NET WinForms or WPF control, and provide a subset of the members from that class,” the company says.

This pack of developer tools was first released in 2016 as UWP Community Toolkit and was originally aimed at app makers who wanted to code for the Microsoft Store. It was renamed to Windows Community Toolkit in May this year as part of a strategy that’s supposed to align with the company’s efforts in the developer community.
