GDPR rules to come into effect on May 25

Microsoft has just announced that the GDPR rules that will come into effect in Europe on May 25, and which the company has no other choice than to comply with for users on the Old Continent, will be expanded to its customers across the entire world.

In other words, the privacy controls that European users will receive from companies offering services on the continent will be available to all Microsoft customers, regardless of their region.

GDPR, which stands for General Data Protection Regulation, will bring new rules allowing users in Europe to have better control over their personal data and know exactly how it’s being used. Like all the other companies, Microsoft has prepared a series of updates to comply with these regulations, as well as changes to its privacy statement to inform of the new privacy controls.

“We will extend the rights that are at the heart of GDPR to all of our consumer customers worldwide. Known as Data Subject Rights, they include the right to know what data we collect about you, to correct that data, to delete it and even to take it somewhere else. Our privacy dashboard gives users the tools they need to take control of their data,” Microsoft explained.

The Redmond-based software giant has long been one of the companies fighting for user privacy, and it has previously decided to go to war with the US government in a case requiring access to customer data stored overseas.

The lawsuit was eventually dropped, after Microsoft resisted a search warrant which requested access to the data, emphasizing that data access requests should not target servers located beyond the borders of each government.

“We've been advocating for national privacy legislation in the United States since 2005. We're encouraged that some other tech companies are starting to endorse the need to address this issue as well. While debate about how to protect data privacy continues in the U.S., we're committed to moving forward now to take concrete steps to help strengthen people's privacy protection,” Microsoft notes.
