Microsoft Edge improvements coming in Redstone 4

Windows 10 Spring Creators Update is almost here, and one of the apps getting an overhaul is Microsoft Edge, the default browser that replaced Internet Explorer when the first version of the operating system launched in July 2015.

As compared to third-party browsers, Microsoft Edge is only getting new features when Microsoft releases major updates for Windows 10, which typically happens two times per year.

This isn’t exactly the best way to go when trying to make your browser a powerful rival to Google Chrome and Firefox, which are both updated at a much faster pace, but Microsoft has apparently abandoned plans to bring Edge to the Store, which would guarantee more frequent improvements.

The Spring Creators Update, however, won’t bring a dramatic overhaul of Microsoft Edge, though there will be several new features and refinements, some of which are based on customer feedback.

First and foremost, Microsoft has finally added small tweaks like options to mute audio for individual tabs. This functionality has been around for a while in third-party browsers, so it’s a good thing that Microsoft Edge gets it, especially because extension support is still in its early days, and add-ons to further enhance the feature lineup are still missing.

Additionally, Microsoft Edge now comes with autofill cards on web forms. This means that Microsoft Edge can now save card information and offer to auto-complete card information when you browse the web, thus helping you save time and contribute to a much seamless browsing experience. Form filling for address fields is also being offered, just like in third-party browsers.

Microsoft has also improved the inPrivate mode, and starting with the Spring Creators Update you can run extensions and have passwords automatically filled in on websites. Previously, extensions were blocked in the inPrivate mode and data used for form filling was disabled as a way to offer enhanced security.

On the other hand, you now have the option to block password saving for websites, and this is certainly a welcome feature especially on computers where more than one user connects to the Internet.

Microsoft Edge, which is often described as the best PDF reader for Windows 10 rather than the best browser, can now save free EPUB books as well. Microsoft has struggled to improve this side of its app, so the Spring Creators Update continues these efforts.

Additionally, the EPUB and PDF bookmarks experience has also been improved, and the reader gets a new UI, with dark and light modes. The reading progress is also synced faster across your Windows 10 devices, Microsoft says.

The Fluent Design language has also expanded to Microsoft Edge, and the reveal effects are available in the Acrylic title bar, making the browser look and feel a little bit more modern.

Starting with the Spring Creators Update, Microsoft Edge comes with a redesigned Hub, featuring a hamburger menu that helps show more content. Also, when opening Start or the New Tab pages, the favorites bar is automatically displayed. This is a feature that’s also being offered in Google Chrome and which is supposed to make loading your favorite websites a lot faster and easier.

There’s something new for developers as well, as the Edge DevTools panel can now be docked vertically. And last but not least, the Reading View feature has been refined with full-screen support, improved library experience, and EPUB Media Overlays.

Without a doubt, all these improvements make Microsoft Edge a more advanced browser, but when comparing the Windows 10 default with third-party rivals, it’s pretty clear that Microsoft still has a long way to go to become a powerful competitor in this side of the market.

For what it’s worth, market share numbers pretty much speak for themselves. Google Chrome is the leading browser on the desktop with a share that exceeds 60 percent, while Microsoft Edge is very far behind with less than 5 percent.
