In 13 years, automation can deprive even one third of employees.

By 2030, automation will make even one third of Americans lose their jobs. Similar trends are noticed in other countries. From year to year, automation is used in other areas. Thanks to its implementation, companies can improve productivity, quality and, above all, speed. Machines also make fewer mistakes. The growing number of machines connected to the Internet, however, increases the risk of attacks on critical infrastructure of companies and even countries.

- One day we could say that industrial automation is a production line, a machine that produces something. As of today, we can speak more about concepts such as automation and this automation is practically ubiquitous, despite the fact that we do not see it. This applies to every person, from water supply, energy reading, automation of these processes, systems in cities, traffic control, railways, and ticket purchase. We are dealing with automation everywhere, 'says Mirosław Zwierzyński from Newmarkia Innowacje, an information agency from Elmark Automatyka.

Automation is becoming ubiquitous to the point that, according to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, over 70 million American employees will have to look for a new job in the next 17 years. Their duties will be taken over by machines that are also getting better and better in jobs that require cognitive skills. This trend includes an increasing number of developed countries.

One of the most important trends on the industrial automation market is the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. IBM has just announced the launch of a new integrated circuit, which, according to the announcement, is expected to work well in related systems, including with artificial intelligence and machine learning. The system called Power9 is to improve the efficiency of this type of solutions up to four times.

- The computing power of today's computers is much larger than it was years ago. This allows you to optimally use the benefits and knowledge that machine learning technologies give us. Machines, devices or technologies will be able to adapt to new, changing conditions as a result of using machine learning - I think that we already deal with this today - says Mirosław Zwierzyński.

Another trend on the automation market is the Internet of Things, which is also called the IIoT, or the Industrial Internet of Things, for the needs of the industry. It is possible to connect everyday items to the network. As the expert notes, the integration and mutual cooperation of individual systems is extremely important. The trend of connecting everything to the Internet also raises some concerns. Industrial automation devices often constitute so-called critical infrastructure, that is, essential for the functioning of the economy.

- In the past, critical systems were separated and had no way of communicating with the outside world. As of today, due to the development of technology, this is changing. It is a threat, because the vulnerability and the possibility of harm, whether it will be a single object, a company or even on a national scale, is quite large - says Mirosław Zwierzyński.

The increasing development and technological advancement determines the demand for more and more advanced technologies that increase the security of critical infrastructure. According to the expert, data transmission is the key in the industry.

- All elements related to the so-called cyber threats start from this moment and the demand for technologies that will guarantee the security of communication, data exchange is getting bigger and will deepen - convinces the expert.

Data from the report of the MarketsandMarkets Research Private company show that in 2016 the industrial automation market reached over USD 145 billion. Over the next six years, it will increase by 7.4% on average annually.
