Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Critical Update KB3211320
Security patch for Microsoft Edge shipped via Windows Update

In addition to the latest cumulative update shipped to Windows insiders a few hours ago, Microsoft also published a new critical security update for users running the stable version of Windows 10.

KB3211320 is a critical security update for Microsoft Edge and is specifically targeting Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607), but for the moment, there’s no KB page to let us know what exactly is being fixed with this patch.

As a result, not much is known about this security update, but everyone is recommended to install it as soon as possible anyway. It does not require a system reboot, but it will close and restart Microsoft Edge browser.

The update has 5.2 MB in size for the 32-bit version and 11.4 MB for the 64-bit, so it’s pretty lightweight, which means that it should take only a few seconds to download and install with a broadband Internet connection.

“Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you have to restart your computer,” Microsoft says in Windows Update.

And yet, the update does not require a reboot and there is no associated KB page that would provide more information on what exactly is being fixed.

The Microsoft Edge push

Microsoft Edge is the new default browser in Windows 10 and Redmond is pushing hard for more people to use it. This rather aggressive approach to boost adoption of Edge browser attracted criticism from both users and other people in the industry, including here Vivaldi browser CEO who accused Microsoft of trying to steal the default in Windows 10.

Vivaldi’s official claims that Microsoft resetting the default browser with every OS update is unfair practice because it’s making it super-hard for users to stick with third-party apps.

More recently, Windows 10 was spotted displaying ads for a Microsoft Google Chrome extension right on the desktop, with the company saying that these are just tips to help users discover the benefits of Windows 10 apps.
