Simple steps to ensure a smooth upgrade process

Windows 10 Spring Creators Update has been delayed, and while Microsoft remained tight-lipped on the reason for this decision and the new ETA, it’s believed the go-ahead would be given in the coming weeks by the end of April.

This means we’re still very close to the moment the Spring Creators Update would go live, and it’s important for Windows 10 users to prepare their systems for the upgrade.

As I’ve said, the rollout of Windows 10 Spring Creators Update will take place in stages, so not everyone will get it on day one. This is because Microsoft wants to collect data from the first waves of PCs getting the update and then address compatibility issues and bugs to provide a smoother upgrade process for everyone else.

As it happens every time new OS feature updates are released, there’ll be lots of users who’ll want to install the Spring Creators Update manually without waiting, and for them, it’s critical to prepare the systems in advance.

First of all, make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements. Windows 10 Spring Creators Update comes with no change to the minimum hardware requirements, which means that if your device is already running the Fall Creators Update, it should be able to upgrade to the new version smoothly.

For everyone else, here are the expected minimum hardware requirements that your system must meet to run the Spring Creators Update:

Processor: 1GHz or faster processor or SoC
RAM: 1GB for 32-bit or 2GB for 64-bit
Hard disk space: 16GB for 32-bit OS or 20GB for 64-bit OS
Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
Display: 800x600 pixels
Again, these are just the minimum requirements, and in order to benefit from flawless experience, you’ll need much more than that. At least 4GB RAM is recommended to run Windows 10 with no performance slowdown, and the newer the processor, the better.

Also, Atom Clover Trail processors are no longer supported. Microsoft pulled support for these chips after it rolled out the Anniversary Update in the summer of 2016, so devices that are powered by them won’t be getting the Spring Creators Update. Upgrading manually could cause issues that you might not be able to fix and the system might not boot at all.

Double-check that you have enough storage. As said, Windows 10 Spring Creators Update will require at least 16GB of storage, but it’s recommended to have at least twice as much to be sure everything downloads and installs correctly.

It goes without saying that if the download process begins and there’s not enough space for the files or for the unpack, the process is put on hold until you clean up some space.

Disable security software. In the past, security solutions, like antivirus products and firewalls, proved to be particularly troublesome for users who upgraded to new Windows 10 versions, and sometimes they blocked the download, the install, or the boot process.

This is why it’s recommended to temporarily disable security software running on your systems until the Spring Creators Update installs and runs correctly.

Check for compatibility issues with old programs. Sometimes, even the smallest app can block the upgrade because of compatibility problems, and this is the reason Microsoft itself rolls out the Spring Creators Update in stages. This time, the company buys more time to flag compatibility issues and fix them before shipping the new OS update to you.

If a specific app hasn’t received an update in a long time, it’s better to make sure if there are any compatibility issues that could block the upgrade. If there are, you should remove it and re-install it after upgrading to the Spring Creators Update.

Clean-installs are the best. Most of these issues can be experienced when upgrading to the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update from an existing install of Windows 10.

On the other hand, if you clean-install the Spring Creators Update everything should run significantly smoother, mostly because there’s no compatibility bug to hit and no problem with third-party apps.

In this case, you’re recommended to check twice that your system meets the system requirements mentioned above, especially in the case of storage.
