Celebgate continues with the latest victim Demi Lavoto. However, celebs are not the only ones being scammed.
Private citizens are also being targeted in similar and sometimes worse exploits.
Spearphishing scams are being harassed by hackers who are compromising Facebook and demanding sex shows from victims. Once they compromise a Facebook account, they message friends and convince them to hand over their credentials by telling them to complete an online survey that has the potential to change the friend’s career.
If the victim falls for the scam, the hacker then accesses their account, they being shutting down accounts and even enabling two-factor authentication on their iCloud account. The hacker then looks for compromising photos and threatens the victim with exposure unless they perform a sex act on camera.
In one case, the victim was able to shut down their Facebook account before the hacker could post the images. However, it did not stop the hacker from sending the photos to the victims contacts.
Law enforcement has taken a stance to cut down on online crimes and managed to arrest and convict a series of hackers in relation to the original Celebgate.
