Chicago Officials Organize Private Security for Gas Stations Amid Carjacking Crisis
Residents terrified to pump gas in broad daylight

A surge of carjackings in Chicago has prompted officials to arrange for private security to guard select gas stations to ensure drivers can safely pump fuel.
Aldermen are organizing “Operation Safe Pump” events at gas stations in the city.
Drivers can stop during set hours to fuel up under the protection of hired guards.
A recent carjacking on the South Side on Christmas Day prompted Alderman Stephanie Coleman to take action “because people are afraid to get gas no matter what time of day of being carjacked.”
“It hit home for me,” she told the Chicago Tribune. “I’m hoping this is something other gas stations can adopt.”
Ald. Roderick Sawyer is also launching ‘Operation Safe Pump’ events in his ward. “It’s really just to do some positive loitering around gas stations with men, particularly making sure women can get gas safely,” Sawyer said.
“People are legitimately scared to get gas even during daylight because of the rash in carjackings.” Chicago saw an explosive 135 percent increase of carjackings in 2020, with 1,415 such crimes recorded during the year – up from 603 in 2019, according to police data analyzed by the Tribune.
At least 166 carjackings reportedly took place in January, putting the Windy City on pace for nearly 2,000 vehicle heists this year.
Minneapolis has experienced a surge of carjackings, as well, including a stunning 537 percent increase in November, as Infowars recently reported.
