Microsoft has announced a new media player specifically built with Windows 11 in mind, and naturally, many see this as the successor to the famous Windows Media Player.
At some level, this isn’t wrong, though on the other hand, the new Media Player in Windows 11 will actually replace Groove Music and even import all its database automatically once installed.
However, the legacy version of Windows Media Player will continue to be available in Windows 11, though it goes without saying most people would prefer the modern version anyway.
A comparison screenshot published by reddit user TheSiZaReddit shows just how much Windows Media Player has evolved, and at the end of the day, how much Windows as a whole has changed, especially in terms of looks and design language.
Currently available for insiders
Microsoft too is very proud with the new media player, with the company highlighting just how good it looks and how smoothly it blends into the new Windows 11 operating system.
“We designed the new Media Player to make listening to and watching your multimedia content more enjoyable on Windows 11, and we’re really excited to introduce it to all of you! Media Player beautifully showcases your local music and video collections and compliments the new look and feel of Windows 11,” Microsoft explains.
“At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists. If your music collection is in Groove Music today, your library and playlists will automatically migrate to this new experience. The update to the new Media Player will replace the Groove Music app.”
At this point, the new media player is only available for insiders, with no ETA as to when the rollout could start for production devices.
