Google planning to expand tablet capabilities with Windows 10 support
Google’s upcoming October 9 “Made by Google” event could bring us not only the new-generation Pixel phones, but also a new device called Google Pixel Slate.
According to recent findings, the Pixel Slate is likely to be a Chrome OS tablet that would be able to dual-boot Windows 10 as well, essentially making it not only the first Chrome OS tablet that Google launches, but also its very own Windows 10 device too.
By the looks of things, Google has been working on bringing Windows 10 to the device since the summer, and a commit from July revealed that the company was stuck at the boot process.
“Windows 10 will BSOD early during booth with the way things are currently laid out,” the commit reads.
If Google has indeed managed to get Windows 10 up and running, the Pixel Slate could thus dual-boot Chrome OS and Microsoft’s operating system, letting users choose the platform that better fits their needs.
A rival to Microsoft Surface?
Needless to say, Chrome OS would be offered as the default and preferred option, and there’s a chance that most users would stick with it given the functionality provided by Google’s operating system.
Windows 10 has never been a successful operating system on tablets, despite the improvements made lately, all while Chrome OS evolved to get support for Android apps. The rich app ecosystem on Android could be a decisive factor in the fight between Chrome OS and Windows 10 on this device.
Things change if the tablet would support detachable keyboards, technically making it possible to switch from the tablet form factor to a laptop. The Google Pixel Slate would thus become a rival to Microsoft’s very own Surface, which has more or less pioneered the 2-in-1 form factor.
The debut of the Pixel Slate may take place next week at Google’s show, and sales are expected to kick off later this month or in November.
