Some patients experiencing blood clots following J&J vaccine injection. Searches for the term “Johnson and Johnson vaccine” topped Google Trends Tuesday, as the CDC announced it would pause the shot’s rollout on blood clot fears.
Stats available through the Trends app Tuesday showed the top Google search in the US was “Johnson and Johnson vaccine,” as millions of Americans hit the search engine to learn why the fast-tracked experimental vaccine emergency authorized by the FDA had been halted. Google search engine users were also presented suggested search terms of trending topics Tuesday, of which “Johnson and Johnson vaccine side effects” topped the list. Searches for the term skyrocketed as the CDC and FDA recommended halting use of the single-dose J&J vaccine, which has already been administered to as many as 6.9 million Americans, saying “they were investigating unusual clots that occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination,” according to the Associated Press. Discussing the vaccine fiasco on a conference call Tuesday morning, FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Director Dr. Peter Marks issued recommendations on treating vaccinated patients with blood clots, as reported by CNBC.
“We know that for these vaccines, that for the first several days after vaccination, there are flu-like symptoms that can include headache,” he said, adding that those are likely common adverse events. “It would be more likely if someone presented to an emergency room with very severe headache or blood clots, that a history of vaccination be elicited” and a plan of care put in place. If the patient also has low platelets, doctors should consider that it may be related to the vaccine, he said.
Meanwhile, a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows people experience more side effects from Moderna’s Covid vaccine than the one produced by Pfizer, which saw six deaths during trials.
