A change in the synthesizer landscape began in the late 80s and early 90s. A new generation of keyboards appeared in stores, on records, and on stage; Matt black giants with green LCD displays replaced the large devices dotted with controllers. They announced far more than a change in the way our musical devices were operated - they ushered in the era of digital synthesizers.
For those who were willing to forego the simple sound editing of the analog synthesizers, the new keyboards opened up amazing new possibilities; multiple polyphony, extensive on-board sequencer and pattern memory, removable media and digital effects. In addition to the immediate benefit of digital sound processing, these keyboards also had innovative hybrid synthesis techniques on board. They combined sample playback with classic methods and opened up new musical spheres for keyboardists and musicians.
