25,000 record rarities: Internet Archive makes hearts of music lovers beat faster
#1
Do you have a soft spot for Bing Crosby, Judy Garland or Duke Ellington and any such oldies? Then you will be pleased to know that you will find  25.000 recordings of old shellac records, in the internet archive now, by famous and also unknown artists.

Briefly:
25,000 shellac plates from the period from 1902 to 1958 were digitally recorded, edited and are now available on the Internet Archive "archive.org" free of charge
Bing Crosby, Judy Andrews, Duke Ellington, The Andrews Sisters and Louis Armstrong, but also lesser known ones such as The Chantels and The Four Tones.

Through the Great 78 Project the Internet Archive has begun to digitize 78rpm discs for preservation, research, and discovery with the help of George Blood, L.P.. 78s were mostly made from shellac, i.e., beetle resin, and were the brittle predecessors to the LP (microgroove) era.

If you follow the download button, you will find the appropriate website"archive.org". In the search field, you can search for different terms - for example the artist or a word from the Song title. If you enter "Edith Piaff" here, you get twelve hits.

If you would like to listen to one of your well-known songs, like "La Vie en Rose", simply select the desired recording by clicking on it. In the following window, you will see an audio chart above and a Playbar. Now click the "Play" icon, start playing the song. Below the bar you can find further recordings of the song, which have been edited in different ways.

If you would like to download a recording, on the respective page of the recording you will find an infobox with the title "Download Options" and blue links. Click on "24Bit Flac" to download the recording uncompressed and unprocessed or with the respective filter function available for download.
