A LINK TO THE PAST: CONNECTING THE BIRTH OF CYBERESPIONAGE
#1

Published on Aug 2, 2017
Cyberespionage research has come a long way. It seems like every week involves the revelation of a sophisticated, groundbreaking operation equipped with cutting-edge malware, crafty exploits, and marketing to match. Three assumptions dominate the discussion: that our knowledge of advanced threats has a short shelf-life; that new attacks happen quickly; and that tracing these campaigns is difficult, made harder by perishable forensic evidence, making a proper historical analysis of the rise of these ubiquitous new threats outright impossible.
But what if we were wrong? What if there were a vault? An innocuous node collecting information untouched for decades? What would we give for a glimpse of the defining cyberespionage operation of the closing 20th century, an up-close view on the rise of a new age of epic SIGINT battles between warring superpowers? The attack that brought cyberwar to the forefront of the American security establishment left open gaping questions. Our analysis will reveal that the ghosts of our past never really disappeared, that they’ve taken a new shape and haunt us to this day.
