More offline tasks moved to the online installation stage

The upcoming Windows 10 Redstone 4 update will come with substantial improvements in terms of installation optimizations, with Microsoft promising it could take only 30 minutes for systems to deploy the new OS version.

This is possible thanks to work on reducing the offline time, as the Windows team has managed to move more tasks performed after the system reboots to the online stage. In other words, a bigger part of the installation process of new Windows 10 feature updates is completed before restarting the system, with everything happening in the background, so the machine spends less time offline overall.

Not all systems will be able to deploy Redstone 4 in 30 minutes though, as this depends on a series of factors, including available hardware.

Running more tasks before the reboot, however, doesn’t cause any impact on system performance or battery life, as the process runs with low priority, Microsoft guarantees.

63% time reduction for Redstone 4
Reducing the offline time is a project that Microsoft started working on before the rollout of the Fall Creators Update, and at that point, the time spent after the reboot dropped to 38% to 51 minutes. Further optimizations for the Redstone 4 update reduced the average time to just 30 minutes, down 63% as compared to the previous release.

“Because of these changes, the online phase for the feature update will take longer to complete. However, this should not be noticeable to most users, as the setup processes run at a low priority, so they won’t have a large impact on a device’s battery life or system performance,” Microsoft says.

As part of the new system, the online stage includes the preparing of user content for migration and moving the new operating system into a temporary working direction, both of which were previously performed in offline mode.

The Windows 10 Redstone 4 update doesn’t yet have an ETA, but it’s projected to be finalized this month for insiders before being shipped to the first systems in April.
