The company revealed a 10 percent boost in PC sales

The PC market has been collapsing for many years now, but HP somehow managed to defy this decline with a 10 percent increase in the last quarter, the company revealed this week.

The firm posted $12.7 billion in revenue, with the PC business, including here notebooks, desktops, and workstations, accounting for $8.22 billion the last quarter, up from $7.46 billion the same period one year before.

On the other hand, the company’s printing division fell substantially by 3 percent to just $4.5 billion, with the business printing unit itself going down no less than 20 percent from the previous quarter.

As far as PC sales are concerned, HP’s executives say the last quarter brought the most substantial growth since the death of Windows XP, when more customers were forced to refresh their hardware because of the end of support.

Windows XP was retired on April 8, 2014, and without security patches and updates, users had to upgrade to newer versions of Windows, which in most cases involved hardware upgrades as well.

“A perfect demonstration of this is in Personal Systems, where yet again for the third consecutive quarter the team delivered exceptional results. The last time we saw this level of revenue growth was in 2014, triggered by the [Windows] XP refresh cycle,” CEO Dion Weisler said.

Decline next quarter?
On the other hand, the company admits that partially responsible for the sales growth was the holiday season and Black Friday, explaining that the next quarter is very likely to generate a drop as the sales level returns to normal.

“Specifically now, though, looking at Q2, what we see is that given the incredible strength in Personal Systems, especially around Black Friday and the holiday season, is that we think we'll have a much higher sequential decline than what we typically see. That combined with the fact that print typically would go up sequentially is going to be a bit of a headwind on Q2 free cash flow. But for the year, good confidence that we could be at the higher end of our outlook range,” Catherine Lesjak, HP’s CFO, said.

Analysts still expect the PC market to continue its collapse, estimating that 2-in-1 devices would gain traction instead, especially because more companies, including Microsoft, release new models that serve as both tablet and laptop with detachable keyboards.
