New security standard for Wi-Fi coming to Windows 10 devices

WPA3 was officially announced earlier this year
Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 10 update, currently codenamed 19H1, is very likely to add support for the WPA3 wireless network connection security standard.

While Microsoft hasn’t released an official announcement in this regard, the company’s recently-published Windows 10 SDK preview for build 18272 includes code that hints at support for WPA3.

Technically, WPA3 was released earlier this year as the most advanced security standard for Wi-Fi connections, adding new features that should enhance protection against brute force attacks, but at the same time, make it easier for users to connect to devices that support it.

For example, WPA3 features what is being called Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), which is a new technology that blocks brute-force attack attempts launched against Wi-Fi networks. It will be available for home users, and beginning in late June, Wi-Fi Alliance has been certifying WPA3 devices with such capabilities.

In the case of enterprises, WPA3 comes with “the equivalent” of 192-bit cryptographic strength, as announced by the Wi-Fi Alliance earlier this year.

Windows 10 19H1 coming in spring 2019
The addition of support for the new protocol in Windows 10 means devices running the operating system can take full advantage of this technology, thus adding a new security layer against possible cyber attacks.

Windows 10 19H1 is still work in progress and the first builds are now being shipped to users enrolled in the Windows Insider program as part of the Fast ring. Both the Slow and the Release Preview rings are getting Windows 10 version 1809 builds, as Microsoft continues testing the October 2018 Update after previously pulling it due to a major bug.

The upcoming Windows 10 OS feature update should land in the spring of 2019. As per Microsoft’s typical release schedule, the update should be finalized in March before the public rollout to devices worldwide starts a month later.
