A Boston doctor has been fined $5,000 after he fell asleep in his car during an emergency surgery and didn’t return to the hospital until the next day. The disciplinary action comes five years after the incident occurred in November 2016, when Dr. Tony Tannoury, 54, and a colleague rolled a patient needing an emergency ankle surgery into the operating room at Boston Medical Center around 9:30 pm.
Tannoury, the head surgeon, said he wanted to eat prior to the surgery and stepped outside for a bite in his car.
He didn’t return to the hospital until the next day.
The patient was “notified of the situation” and the chief resident performed the surgery after Tannoury missed it, The Boston Globe reported.
A consent order released Oct. 25 this year by the Board of Registration in Medicine, revealed that Tannoury admitted to falling asleep in his car that night and missed the surgery.
In addition to the fine, Tannoury will also be required to complete five professional development courses after being reprimanded by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
A spokesperson for Boston Medical Center explained that the disciplinary action took so long because the surgery’s outcome was “positive” and there has been no “additional issues” raised about Tannoury’s employment since the incident.
