Microsoft Outbid Google in the Fight for GitHub

Google was also interested in taking over GitHub

Microsoft wasn’t the only company that wanted to purchase GitHub, as new information that surfaced earlier today now reveals that search giant Google also considered a potential acquisition.

Microsoft announced on Monday that it would purchase the world’s largest code repository for $7.5 billion, which according to a report from CNBC, is 25 times the revenue of the service.

But while for the Redmond-based software firm this is a deal that at some level makes a lot of sense given its investments in the open-source ecosystem, it looks like reaching an agreement was harder than it seems due to bids coming from other companies.

Microsoft managed to outbid Google, the report reveals, and several other parties were interested in a possible acquisition, including Amazon and China-based Tencent.

Microsoft’s financial power, however, coupled with the relationship of GitHub founder Chris Wanstrath with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made the software firm the big winner of the battle.

Nadella: GitHub will continue to run independently
The cited source goes on to quote people familiar with the matter as saying that even though GitHub’s founder has never put the focus on generating revenue “out of a desire to give free tools to developers,” Satya Nadella managed to convince him an acquisition was the way to go because of the direction that the company sees for the code repository service.

Satya Nadella has promised that GitHub would continue to run independently, despite admitting that some changes aimed at enterprises would be made. Nadella said Microsoft is aware of the concerns coming from the developer community, some of which have pushed many to alternative services, but guaranteed that the company is “all-in on open source.”

“We’ll have to earn the trust, there’s no question of that, our actions from the recent past should help assure every open-source developer of what Microsoft’s intents are, and of course, they should measure us by what we do going forward and hold us accountable,” Nadella said in a recent interview.
