Last year, CD sales in the U.S. were down 18.5 percent, despite its relative success worldwide.
Billboard reported that the company’s CD business currently only generates about $40 million annually, but the retailer will continue to carry vinyl for the next two years, part of a commitment to vendors.
Best Buy used to be one of the largest music merchandisers in the U.S.
Target has also given music and video suppliers an ultimatum on CDs and DVDs. The company said it will only sell music CDs under a consignment basis and only pay labels for CDs when customers buy them instead of bulk ordering, according to The Verge. :(
