If you've ever predicted that Cortana might be able to control your entire home, and you'll simply have everything around you work with voice commands, you sir might be a fortune teller.

Because that's what Microsoft is very close to doing with Windows 10, Cortana, and its IoT push, as the company has recently joined forces with Samsung for what could be revolutionary home technology.

At CES 2015, Samsung and Microsoft demonstrated how the two companies are supporting the IoT efforts with their own projects and presented a washing machine that was powered by Cortana. This is just one of the appliances that could get Windows 10 integration, as refrigerators, cooking ovens, and TVs could also be controlled with Cortana.

During the demo, which you can find at the end of the article, the companies' executives asked Cortana to display the last activities of the washing machine in order to find out the members of the family who used it.

And Microsoft says this is just the beginning of a longer collaboration in this field, explaining that Windows 10 is just the right platform that could be used for this purpose.

Certainly, having a fully connected home is quite a thing, but it also raises some privacy and security concerns for those who want to control everything around them with the power of their voice. But these are challenges that all involved companies are trying to address right now, so it's pretty clear that the revolution has started. Microsoft has just rolled out updated versions of Word and Excel for Windows 10, so users can now fire up the store and get them on their PCs and laptops running the new OS.

As it happens with 99 percent of the app updates, Microsoft hasn’t provided a detailed change log to let us know what is new in this release, so you basically have to download the new versions without actually knowing what’s included.

That’s certainly frustrating, and that’s why so many users are now calling for Microsoft to adapt its strategy and include change logs in every new app update, but for the moment, the company doesn’t really seem to be willing to do so.

The Office suite for Windows 10 is free of charge on all devices running the new OS, but if you’re looking for document editing capabilities on bigger screens, an Office 365 subscription is needed. Otherwise, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are nothing more than document viewers compatible with the standard formats used by the Office suite.

There still are plenty of Windows 10 adopters who are using these Office apps on their computers, so if you’re one of them, you should get the new updates too. The development of Windows 10 Redstone continues at Microsoft, and the company is now expected to ship a new preview build to members of the Insider program as soon as the next week.

The leader of the Windows Insider effort, Gabriel Aul, has confirmed in a short tweet that the company is internally testing Windows 10 Redstone build 11097, but he has refused to provide any specifics regarding the possible release date.
He has, however, mentioned that there are no big changes implemented in this build, but only small refinements, bug fixes, and performance improvements, so should 11097 be released to testers, no exciting updates are to be expected.
Microsoft rolled out the most recent Windows 10 Mobile build on Friday, so now the company is supposed to do the same next week for PC users. But depending on how development on this particular build advances, the company can decide whether it wants to push it to testers or wait a little bit longer until a more reliable and stable build is compiled.

Hopefully, not a long wait

Microsoft promised to release Windows 10 builds at a faster pace in 2016, but since no new builds have been shipped this year as of January 10, some of the users are wondering whether the company can really deliver on its promise or not.
Gabe Aul says that it's just a matter of time until the first build arrives, and then the Windows team can focus on providing us with more and more releases than in the previous year. Of course, it remains to be seen if this strategy can indeed be implemented, but it's pretty clear that users aren't willing to wait any longer.

Windows 10 Redstone is projected to debut in the summer of this year with big improvements to the core operating system, including support for Microsoft Edge browser extensions.

Windows 8 was launched in October 2012 with much fanfare, but in the end, this proved to be just another flop in Microsoft's history. Often referred to as “the second Vista,” Windows 8 will reach end of support next week on Tuesday, so all users who are still running it must upgrade to 8.1 as soon as possible.

Although it sounds weird to see a Windows version discontinued after only three years, it actually makes sense because Microsoft considers Windows 8.1 a service pack. So it applies the same strategy as in the case of Windows 7, which got its very own service pack too.

Windows 8.1 is offered free of charge to everyone on Windows 8, so the upgrade can be performed at any time by simply downloading the files from Microsoft's servers. If you do that, support is automatically guaranteed until January 10, 2023, the date when Microsoft end extended support (mainstream support ends on January 9, 2018).

The Windows 10 upgrade

At the same time, once you install Windows 8.1, you have another option and can upgrade to Windows 10, also free of charge and also with just a few clicks. Windows 10 will receive support until October 14, 2025, with mainstream support ending on October 13, 2020.

The good news is that, at this point, only a few users are still on Windows 8, with third-party statistics showing that the operating system launched in 2012 is only running on some 2 percent of the PCs across the world.

This means that it shouldn't take too long until everyone updates to Windows 8.1, but the biggest problem here is to make people aware of the end of support date. Microsoft isn't yet showing any EOL notifications on Windows 8, but the company could start doing this in order to make sure that everyone stays secure.

January 12, 2016, will be the last time Windows 8 receives security patches from Microsoft.
