The flaw could have allowed attackers to install malware on computers

A software utility that helps users download the latest drivers for their Intel hardware components contained a vulnerability that could have allowed man-in-the-middle attackers to execute malicious code on computers.

The tool, known as the Intel Driver Update Utility, can be downloaded from Intel's support website. It provides an easy way to find the latest drivers for various Intel chipsets, graphics cards, wireless cards, desktop boards, Intel NUC mini PCs or the Intel Compute Stick.

The vulnerability stems from the tool using unencrypted HTTP connections to check for driver updates. Such connections can be intercepted and modified by attackers located on the same local network as affected computers or in control of a router along their Internet connection paths.

The flaw was discovered by researchers from Core Security and was reported to Intel in November. The chip maker fixed the issue and released an updated version of the tool on Tuesday.

Intel Driver Update Utility users are strongly advised to download the latest version from Intel's support website.

The Core Security researchers found that the utility was checking for new driver versions by downloading XML files from Intel's website over HTTP. These files included the IDs of hardware components, the latest driver versions available for them and the corresponding download URLs. This information was displayed in the tool's interface and users would have to confirm the installation of any available updates.

The tool was designed to check that the download URLs pointed to files hosted under the intel.com domain name. However, man-in-the-middle attackers would have been able to both modify the XML files in transit and to bypass the tool's domain check by using techniques such as ARP poisoning and DNS spoofing, the Core researchers said in an advisory.

This vulnerability is the latest in a string of serious flaws found over the past year in support software distributed by hardware manufacturers.

Microsoft is making available to testers the Release Candidates of SharePoint Server 2016 and Project Server 2016 ahead of their Spring general availability.
 
Microsoft is making available to testers on January 20 the Release Candidate (RC) builds of SharePoint Server 2016 and Project Server 2016.

The SharePoint Server 2016 RC is "mostly feature complete," according to Microsoft's blog post on its availability. Microsoft is still on track to make SharePoint Server 2016 generally available in the Spring of 2016, today's post also confirmed.

The focus of this release of SharePoint Server is on hybrid-computing scenarios, officials have said. It also will add more data security and compliance support and better access to mobile content and applications. Many of the features in this release of SharePoint Server are already available in SharePoint Online.

In a frequently-asked questions portion of today's post, Microsoft officials acknowledged the company is adjusting its support timelines for InfoPath and SharePoint Designer. Microsoft officials said in 2014 that the company would be dropping support for InfoPath, its electronic forms product, and last summer that there'd be no more SharePoint Designer.

Mozilla Firefox users noticed yesterday that a new plugin was installed in their web browser without them being informed about it (read Microsoft Silently Installing Windows Presentation Foundation Plugin For Firefox for pointers. Mozilla Firefox users on Windows who installed the Microsoft net. Framework 3.5 SP1 on the operating system had a plugin installed in Firefox automatically without receiving a prompt or notification about it.

This is problematic from a security point of view but also when it comes to stability and privacy.

The majority of blame should not be put solely on Microsoft though as other software companies like Apple or Google have done exactly the same thing in the past to load their plugins in the web browser.

Firefox users may notice a Google Update plugin or Apple iTunes plugin in the plugin section of the web browser, and those installations are not blocked by the Firefox browser as well. These companies use how Firefox detects and loads plugins, and while there are ways to block plugins from being loaded, no initial protection is provided by the browser.

Firefox: block plugin installations



There is however an option to block automatic plugin installations. It is not a perfect solution though but it is all that is provided currently. Mozilla developers have added several directories and locations in the Firefox preferences that are automatically scanned by the web browser for plugins. If a plugin is found it will be added and activated in the browser.

These plugin directories are listed in the all.js files which is located in the greprefs directory of the Firefox installation.

Update:
Mozilla has changed the location and name of the preferences file. The all.js file and greprefs folder are no longer available, at least not in their initial location. The resource file you are looking for has been integrated into the omni.ja file in the default Firefox installation directory.

The easiest way to control plugins is to load about:config in Firefox, and manage the preference names there:

1. plugin.scan.plid.all - This defines if Firefox will scan the Windows Registry for plugin links (if set to true) or not (set to false).
   
   
2. plugin.scan.Acrobat - The value of this preference defines the minimum version of Adobe Acrobat that Firefox will load as a plugin if installed on the system.
   
   
3. plugin.scan.Quicktime - Same as Adobe, but for Apple Quicktime.

Hosts Block is a free program for the Windows operating system that has been designed to protect the hosts file and update it regularly with lists of blocked malicious, adware or spyware domains.

The program has been designed with ease of use in mind. Simply install it on your Windows PC and it will run quietly in the background for the most part.
The application adds an icon to the Windows system tray which you can use to open its interface and control some of the features it makes available.
The interface displays the current version of the hosts file. There you will notice that it is based on the MVPS Hosts file, and also find the total number of blocked websites of the current list version.

Hosts Block
All blocked domains are displayed in the interface, and it is there that you may edit entries or add new ones to the listing.


 
The interface works like any other text editor which means that you can edit entries directly or add new ones using the keyboard.
The main toolbar lists several options that the program makes available. There you find options to run an update check, back up the list for safe keeping, or to manage the list of exclusions or custom entries.
Last but not least, commands list several useful options such as flushing the DNS cache, disabling the Windows DNS client, or opening the hosts file directly.

You may also want to check the settings at least once as they provide options to add another list to the hosts file, configure the update frequency or startup behavior.

The second list you can add in the program is the MDL (Malware Domain List) hosts file. Other options are to change from using 0.0.0.0 to 127.0.0.1 for the blocking, setting the hosts file to read only, or disabling the program's active protection feature that prevents changes to the hosts file that come from outside sources.

There is also an advanced menu that you can use to add custom hosts file. Up to five hosts files can be added this way by adding the url to the hosts file to the application.

The program indicates whether it can access a hosts file directly in the interface, and the linked hosts file needs to be of the .txt file type.
 
Comparison
 
So how does Hosts Block fare against the established and popular HostsMan? HostsMan does not require the Microsoft .Net Framework while Hosts Block does. Functionality wise, features that you expect to be offered by a hosts manager are included in both applications.

HostsMan is a mature program on the other hand offering several features that Hosts Block does not right now. For instance, it ships with support for additional lists out of the box, features useful tools that let you replace IP addresses or re-order the hosts file, or may auto-flush the DNS cache after updates.
Both hosts manager are well designed however, and it seems that Hosts Block is on a good way to feature parity with HostsMan.
