Windows Built-In PDF Reader Exposes Edge Browser to Hacking |

WinRT PDF exposes users to drive-by attacks
WinRT PDF, the default PDF reader for Windows 10, opens Edge users to a new series of attacks that are incredibly similar to how Flash, Java, and Acrobat exposed Web users for the past few years.
The Windows Runtime (WinRT) PDF Renderer library, or just WinRT PDF, is a powerful component built into recent Windows OS versions that allows developers to easily integrate a PDF viewing feature inside their apps.
The library is used for many apps distributed via the Windows Store, the default Reader App included in Windows 8 and 8.1, and even with Edge, Microsoft's latest Web browser.
Hackers can abuse WinRT PDF for drive-by attacks
Mark Vincent Yason, security researcher with IBM's X-Force Advanced Research team has discovered that WinRT PDF can be leveraged in drive-by attacks in the same way attackers used Flash or Java in the past.
Since WinRT PDF is Edge's default PDF reader, any PDF file embedded inside a Web page will be opened within the library. A clever attacker can contain a WinRT PDF exploit within his PDF file, which could be secretly opened using an iframe positioned off screen with CSS.
The malicious code would execute, and exploit the WinRT PDF vulnerability in the same way exploit kits like Angler or Neutrino deliver Flash, Java, or Silverlight payloads.
All that an attacker needs to do is to find and create a database of WinRT vulnerabilities it could leverage to distribute his malware via this new attack surface.
Hold your horses everyone!
"A major factor that will affect when and how often we see in-the-wild exploits for WinRT PDF vulnerabilities depends on how difficult it is to exploit them," Mr. Yason explains.
He says that because Windows 10 implemented former EMET features such as ASLR protection and Control Flow Guard, "makes the development of exploits for WinRT PDF vulnerabilities time-consuming and therefore costly for an attacker."
Mr. Yason will be presenting a more in-depth presentation of this attack surface at this year's RSA security conference in San Francisco.

Microsoft pushed out two new updates for stable versions of the company's Windows 10 operating system today.
The updates KB3140743 and KB3139907 are available via the operating system's update service or as direct downloads from Microsoft's Download Center.
KB3140743 is a cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 1511 that introduces a bunch of improvements and fixes, but no new features, to Windows 10.
The update is on the heavy side at 311 MB for 32-bit versions and 548 MB for 64-bit versions of Windows 10.
Check for Updates in Windows 10
You probably know how to check for updates if you are a regular here on Ghacks Technology News, so, just a short summary of how its done this time:
- Use Windows-I to open the Settings application on the operating system.
- Open Update & security.
- Windows 10 checks for updates automatically, and presents them to you on the Windows Update page.
- Click on download to download and install the updates.
KB3140743:
Microsoft's new update history page reveals key changes that the update brings to the Windows 10 operating system:
- Reliability improvements in many areas including the operating system and Windows Update installation, startup, first time configuration, authentication, resuming the operating system, the Start menu, Microsoft Edge, network connectivity, and File Explorer.
- Video thumbnail generation performance improvements.
- Power consumption improvements in NetLogon, Windows Store and standby.
- Improved device support for "some" wearables, displays and printers.
- App defaults are reset when a Registry setting is deleted or corrupted, and notifications about the corruption were streamlined.
- Improved support for numerous items including apps, fonts, graphics and display, Group Policy, PowerShell MDM, Microsoft Edge, printing, touch display, Windows UX, local and streaming video, audio quality, and error reporting.
- The audio quality of Cortana has been improved.
- Issues that caused apps to fail to launch, update or allow in-app purchases have been fixed.
- Fixed an issue where favorites were lost after the installation of updates.
Check out the full release log that Microsoft provided on the Windows 10 update history page linked above.
The cumulative update increases the build version of Windows 10 to 10586.122 after it has been installed.
The update KB3139907 is not included in the cumulative update but available as a separate update instead. Microsoft notes that it makes stability improvements to the servicing stack.
This update makes stability improvements for Windows 10 Version 1511 and Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 4 servicing stack.
As is the case with all Windows Updates lately, it is highly suggested to create a backup before they are applied. In addition, you may want to check settings (default applications, privacy settings) after the updates are installed as things may have been reset once again

Firefox Add-on YouTube Unblocker blocked by Mozilla |

Firefox Add-on YouTube Unblocker blocked by Mozilla
Mozilla banned the popular Firefox add-on YouTube Unblocker yesterday after it was confirmed that it tampers with Firefox security preferences, and downloads and installs an unrelated add-on from an unofficial website.
The add-on, used to unblock YouTube videos that are blocked in certain countries by redirecting access through proxy servers in countries where the video is available, has hundreds of thousands of users.
The bug report on Bugzilla offers details on the add-on's wrong doings. It disables Firefox security preferences using user.js manipulations, among them the blocklist feature and add-on signature enforcement, and downloads another add-on afterwards, named Adblock Converter, which it hides from the browser's Add-on Manager.
Please note that the downloaded extension may use different names, so make sure you check for any add-on listed in the Add-ons Manager that you have not installed.
Looking at the code of the add-on "YouTube Unblocker", I found the responsible code in the file youtubeunblocker@unblocker.yt\resources\unblocker-api\lib\utils.js following line 138. The function updateConfigFile() downloads files from a web server and places them onto the hard drive of the user.
In the case of the attached response.json it is a user.js and a malicious add-on. Both are a clear violation of the add-on guidelines.
Firefox users who have the add-on installed in the browser should consider the following course of action immediately:
- Removal of the YouTube Unblocker add-on if that has not been done already by Mozilla through the browser's blocklist feature.
- Removal of the adblock converter extension using Firefox's Safe Mode. This can be started by holding down the Shift-key on the keyboard before Firefox is launched.
- Opening the profile folder to delete any traces of YouTube Unblocker or Adblock Converter, especially any folder starting with youtubeunblocker
- Starting Firefox, opening about:config and resetting the following Firefox preferences by searching for them, right-clicking on them and selecting reset from the context menu:
- xpinstall.signatures.required
- extensions.blocklist.enabled
- extensions.blocklist.url
- extensions.blocklist.detailsURL
- extensions.blocklist.itemURL
Firefox users who want to be on the safe side should consider resetting the browser instead. This can also be done by holding down the Shift-key on the keyboard during start of the browser.
Select Refresh Firefox this time to reset the browser. Please note that this will remove installed add-ons, themes, and reset preferences and other customization, but will keep bookmarks, passwords, the browsing history and open windows and tabs among other things.
The add-on is no longer listed on Mozilla's official Add-ons repository (AMO)
