For some time now I have experienced a strange issue when using Microsoft's Edge web browser on a Windows 10 machine.

I checked all settings several times just to make sure, but Edge was set to load the previous pages each time I did so.

About a week ago, I had the feeling that this was PDF related. Microsoft Edge is the default PDF reader no the Windows 10 operating system, but tests back then did not come to a conclusive result.

I tried to load several PDF documents from the Web, closed Edge, started it up anew, and there they were.

Today, a PDF document was loaded in Edge from an email that I received in Thunderbird. It opened the PDF, but all other tabs loaded in the browser were gone.

Thinking that I was on to something, I opened a couple of tabs, closed Edge, and loaded the same PDF document again. And et voila, all tabs were gone and only the PDF document was loaded.

To be clear, this seems to happen only when Microsoft Edge is not open at the time.

Thinking that this was probably a bug on the machine, I fired up another, this one running the latest Windows 10 Insider Build instead of the latest stable build, and it too showed the same characteristics.

If you load a PDF from a local source, Edge will open without any tab open that was opened previously even if you have set the browser to remember the last browsing session.

On the stable machine, Windows 10 displays an "open with" prompt, and if you select TWINUI, the PDF document is loaded in Microsoft Edge by default.



TWINUI, or the Tablet Windows User Interface , is part of the Windows Shell on Windows 8 and newer machines that "provides a set of functionality including starting applications to Windows itself and other programs".

If you load the document from a local drive directly, no such dialog is displayed and the PDF is opened in Microsoft Edge directly.

Fix for the bug in Microsoft Edge



The only solution to the issue right now is to use a different program to open PDF documents on Windows 10. I suggest you check out the excellent Sumatra for that for example.

To make Sumatra the default program for PDF documents on Windows 10, do the following:

1. Right-click on a local PDF file and select properties from the context menu.
   
   
   
2. Click on the change button on the general tab next to the "opens with" listing.
   
   
   
3. Find Sumatra, or another PDF reader in the listing, or click on "more apps", and scroll all the way down until you find the "look for another app on this PC" option. Select it.
   
   
   
4. A file browser opens. Use it to select the PDF reader executable that you want to make the default.
   
   

The latest cumulative update causing issues for some

If you’re a tech savvy user keeping an eye on everything Microsoft, you probably know that a number of Windows 10 cumulative updates have failed to install for some with various errors.

And the recently-released KB3140768 seems to be undergoing the same problems, as several users have already confirmed that after trying to install this update, the computer is then restored to the previous settings in order to be able to log into the PC.

Details are missing for the moment and it’s not yet clear if errors experienced with this update are as widespread as they were in the case of the previously-launched KB3140743, but reports are rather isolated right now. We’ve reached out to Microsoft anyway to ask for more information and see if the company is aware of problems experienced with the new cumulative update.

Only a few reports so far

A few posts on TechNet and on Microsoft’s Community forums seem to confirm that a small number of PCs are hit with KB3140768 installation issues, but for the moment, the majority of users seems to be able to deploy the new patch correctly and without coming across any bug.

Windows 10 cumulative updates include all the previously released fixes and that’s why it’s very important for all PCs running the new operating system to install them, as they help remain completely up-to-date.

KB3140768 is all about fixing bugs and improving performance, so it does not come with any new features for Windows 10. On the other hand, it boosts Windows 10 version to 10586.164, thus bringing PCs in line with mobile devices, which also got updated to .164 a few hours ago.

Without a workaround for these issues, the only way to deal with the installation problems is to completely hide the update until a fix or at least more information from Microsoft is provided.

Firefox 45 has been released on March 8, 2016  to the stable channel. The release overview lists all major changes of the release for Firefox desktop and mobile versions.

All Firefox channels get updated at the same time which means that Beta, Developer Edition, Nightly and Firefox ESR releases are also updated on the same day.

This moves Firefox Beta to version 46, the Developer Edition to version 47, Nightly to version 48, and Firefox ESR to 45.0 (with 38.7 offered as well).

The new version marks the beginning of a new Firefox Extended Release Cycle giving companies and individuals 12 weeks to upgrade from version 38.x to the new 45.x branch before version 38.8 is retired.

1. Firefox ESR 45.0 is available. Firefox Hello and Service Workers are both disabled in Firefox ESR 45.0.
