Small update bringing stability improvements in the new OS
Microsoft has recently rolled out another update for Windows 10 that brings stability improvements, so everyone’s recommended to install it as soon as possible on their devices.
KB3140741 is a servicing stack update for Windows 10 version 1511 and includes, just like its name clearly states, improvements for the servicing stack, so no new major changes should be spotted after installing it.
Just like all the other updates released by Microsoft, it can be installed automatically via Settings > Update & Security, and a system reboot is not required.
Microsoft has provided quite a small change log, with no specifics on what exactly these improvements are tweaking on Windows 10 computers installing the update.
“This update makes stability improvements for Windows 10 Version 1511 servicing stack. If you are installing a servicing stack update package for the first time, the package for the x86 version is 5 MB and the package for the x64 version is 11 MB,” it says.
No new cumulative update just yet:
Although many users expected this to be a cumulative update for Windows 10, it’s actually just a regular patch that needs to be installed on version 1511.
Cumulative updates are particularly important for Windows 10 users because they include all the previously-released fixes, so installing the latest one brings a computer completely up to date. And yet, it’s no secret that cumulative updates have also caused trouble on systems trying to install it, as some users reported issues not only during the install process but also after that, with certain features of the OS said to be impacted by unknown bugs.
In the meantime, everyone is recommended to install this new servicing stack update, and IT administrators can do this as well because no system reboot is required. If you want to install the update manually, open the Microsoft Update Catalog in Internet Explorer to get the download links.

Microsoft Releases Mysterious Windows Update with No Details About What It Does |

KB3103709 is specifically aimed at Windows 8.1 users
KB3103709 is one of the updates released by Microsoft as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout, but as compared to the typical Windows patch, this one comes with zero information about its content or purpose. So while users are being offered this update, nobody can tell for sure what it does.
Specifically, KB3103709 is only offered to computers running Windows 8.1 and is listed as optional, so users need to manually select it when installing updates via Windows Update. But if they do, it’s nearly impossible to say what it changes, although Woody Leonhard of InfoWorld says that at least one user claimed that a Windows 10 upgrade popup was spotted after installing the update.
Windows 10 is offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs and Microsoft uses patches shipped via Windows Update to let users know about their promo, to prepare computers for the upgrade, but also to “nag” them every once in a while to make the move.
On the other hand, there are some posts that KB3103709 is actually related to Microsoft’s Active Directory Services given some of the files included in the archive, but with a confirmation from Microsoft, it’s nearly impossible to tell this for sure.
The Windows 10 upgrade push
It wouldn’t be the first time when Microsoft rolls out a patch that’s supposed to bring more upgrade notifications on computers running an older version of Windows.
Previously, the company has implemented a popup notification system in an Internet Explorer security patch offered as recommended, with users of the browser getting a message to upgrade to Windows 10 whenever they opened a new tab.
But for the moment, it’s not clear if this update is related in any way to the Windows 10 upgrade push, so we’ve reached out to Microsoft to ask for an answer and will update the article should an answer be provided.

Microsoft Adds New Feature in Office 2016 That Can Block Macro Malware |

How-to guide also included, showing sysadmins how to protect their enterprises from malicious macro malware
Microsoft is finally addressing the elephant in the room in terms of security for Office users and has announced a new feature in the Office 2016 suite that will make it harder for attackers to exploit macro malware.
For years, macro malware has been the easiest avenue in infecting Microsoft users, and despite all the warnings and examples where macro-transmitted malware infections have ravaged entire companies, users kept enabling macros in their Office documents.
Created to allow dynamic content to be loaded in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents, macros allow crooks to automatically execute malicious scripts that connect to the Internet and download malware.
The usual way to deliver macro malware is by spam. Victims get an email in their inbox that has an attached Office file. The victim downloads the Office file and tries to open it, usually finding a (social engineered) message at the top of the document instructing him to exit Protected View and Enable Macros to view the content in its entirety.
While security-aware users will quickly recognize this as a malware-laden file, most users will not, and will follow the instructions by enabling macros.
As soon as this happens, the malicious scripts recorded in the document's macro are executed, and the malware is retrieved from a remote Web server, saved on the computer, and even launched in execution.
In the past few years, we've seen macro malware deliver all kinds of malware, from spyware to adware, but most importantly ransomware.
Sysadmins can now block macros that connect to the Internet
Now, Microsoft is announcing a new feature in its Office 2016 suite that will allow corporate network administrators to block the execution of macros that retrieve content from untrusted sources, which in most network configurations is "the Internet."
"This feature can be controlled via Group Policy and configured per application," Microsoft explains. "It enables enterprise administrators to block macros from running in Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents that come from the Internet."
Once a network admin enables this protection for Office 2016 installations, when the user tries to enable a macro that retrieves content off the Internet, he'll get a message like the following.
How to block macros that retrieve content of the Internet in Office 2016
If you're a system administrator and you're running Office 2016 in your network, here's how to block macros that retrieve content off the Internet.
Step 1: Download the Office 2016 Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) and Office Customization Tool from Microsoft's website.
Step 2: Open the Group Policy Management Console. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Group Policy Management.
Step 3: Locate and right-click the Group Policy Object that you want to configure and click Edit.
Step 4: Select the Group Policy Management Editor, go to User Configuration. (see image below)
Step 5: Select Administrative templates > Microsoft Word 2016 > Word options > Security > Trust Center. (see image below)
Step 6: Open the Block macros from running in Office files from the Internet option, configure it, and then enable it. (see image below)
For situations where home-brew macros need to download content of the Internet for legitimate purposes, Microsoft has issued the following advice: "Users with legitimate scenarios that are impacted by this policy should work with their enterprise administrator to identify alternative workflows that ensure the file’s original location is considered trusted within the organization."
"Block macros from running in Office files from the Internet" option

Tame CPU hungry processes and take control of your PC!
Overview:
Process Lasso is NOT yet another task manager. It is real-time process optimization and automation software. Priority optimization, affinity optimization, core optimization, automated rules, automated power profiles; you name it, and Process Lasso does it!
Process Lasso's most popular feature is the unique process optimization technology called ProBalance (Process Balance) that will improve your PC's responsiveness and stability by making intelligent dynamic adjustments to the priority class of background processes. Windows, by design, allows programs to monopolize your CPU without sufficient restraint -- leading to hangs, micro-lags, and delays in your keystroke or mouse actions. ProBalance intelligently adjusts process priorities so that badly behaved processes won't negatively impact the responsiveness of your PC. This has been proven to be safe and very effective, as you can see from our CPUEater demo.
Remember: No configuration is necessary. Install it, and forget it!
Process Lasso, and it's ProBalance algorithm, are as usual and efficacious for new PCs as they are for old PCs, especially since the speed of processors hasn't been increasing a lot in recent years, replaced instead by increased parallelism (more cores). In fact, a strong argument can be made that Process Lasso is now more useful and efficacious than ever!
In addition to ProBalance, there are countless features allowing the user to take full automated control of the processes on their PC. You can have a wide range operations performed, or settings applied, each time a process is run. Core optimization technologies allow you to choose on what CPUs/cores a process should run, as well as what their CPU priority class and I/O priority class should be. You can also disallow specified processes from running, log all processes run, and set various other process rules.
Features:
- ProBalance - Keep your PC responsive during high CPU loads! Safe and PROVEN
- Gaming Mode 2.0 with Bitsum Highest Performance power plan - new
- IdleSaver - Run at maximum performance while active; conserve energy when idle
- SmartTrim - The first-ever intelligent RAM manager - new
- Real-time CPU affinity and process priority optimization!

- Native 64-bit code for maximum performance
- Unique system responsiveness metric to quantify your experience!
- Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and now Windows 10

Infognition Video Enhancer |

It is the best quality tool for converting SD videos to HD or HD to 4K using motion-based Super Resolution technique and supporting 200+ video processing filters.
Infognition Video Enhancer is a video processing application with built-in Super Resolution video resizing engine that uses motion tracking to combine information from neighbor frames into each output frame when resizing to higher resolutions. This allows converting SD videos to HD or HD to 4K with higher quality, more details and sharpness than any single-image upscaling methods that are usually employed by other converters or players. It also supports 200+ third-party video processing filters from VirtualDub: brightness and contrast control, color correction, deinterlacing, denoising, sharpening, subtitle/logo processing and different video effects. The plugins are installed on-demand in one click, from a window with categorized database of filters and convenient search function.
Two modes of interface are offered: simple for just resizing, and advanced for building a sequence of filters to be applied to the video. Also, a wizard mode is present to guide the user through most basic video processing tasks. All filters work in separate threads and are connected into a pipeline, utilizing multiple cores and multiple CPUs where available.
Video Enhancer can open most popular video formats and also use any 32-bit codecs and splitters installed in your system. It includes AVI and MP4 muxers to output videos in these formats, however it does not include video & audio compressors, so you need some 32-bit codecs (like x264vfw or DivX) to be installed beforehand.
Judging by source video parameters and available codecs Video Enhancer advises which codecs are preferred and what bitrate shall be used to encode the result with proper visual quality.
Video Enhancer allows saving projects (sequences of selected filters and their settings) for later reuse. It has batch mode (processing multiple files in a row) and command line interface, and with additional free tool “autovideoenhance” (available from VE web page) they can watch some directories on your hard drive and process newly added files automatically.
User interface is available in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Turkish and some other languages.

What’s the Difference Between Private and Public Networks in Windows? |
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-23-2016 , 12:15 AM - Forum: Guides, Tips & Tricks
- No Replies
|
|
Windows lets you set each network you connect to as either a “Private” or “Public” network. When you connect to a network the first time, Windows 10 asks if you want your computer to be discoverable or not by other computers.
This option helps Windows understand the type of network you’re connecting to so it can select the correct settings. For example, Windows will behave much more conservatively on public networks than it will on your home network, boosting your security.
Public vs. Private
You can customize how Windows treats Private and Public networks, but here’s how it works by default.
On Private networks, Windows enables network discovery features. Other devices can see your Windows computer on the network, allowing for easy file sharing and other networked features. Windows will also use the Homegroup feature to share files and media between your PCs.
On Public networks–like those in coffee shops–you don’t want your computer to be seen by others, though, or share your files with them. So Windows turns off these discovery features. it won’t appear to other devices on the network and won’t try to discover them. Even if you’ve set up a Homegroup on your PC, it won’t be enabled on a public network.
It’s simple, really. Windows assumes that your private networks–like your home or work networks–are trusted networks full of other devices you may want to connect to. Windows assumes that public networks are full of other people’s devices you don’t want to connect to, so it uses different settings.
How to Switch a Network From Public to Private or Private to Public
You normally make this decision the first time you connect to a network. Windows will ask whether you want your PC to be discoverable on that network. if you select Yes, Windows sets the network as Private. If you select No, Windows sets the network as public. You can see whether a network is private or public from the Network and Sharing Center window in the Control Panel.
On Windows 7, you can click the link right below the network’s name here and set the network to either “Home Network,” “Work Network,” or “Public
Network.” A Home network is a Private network, while a Work network is like a Private network where discovery is enabled but Homegroup sharing isn’t.
To switch a network to public or private on Windows 10, you’ll need to use the Settings app.
If you’re using a Wi-Fi connection, first connect to the Wi-Fi network you want to change. Launch the Settings app, select “Network & Internet,” select “Wi-Fi,” scroll down, and click “Advanced options.”
If you’re using a wired Ethernet connection, connect to that network. Launch the Settings app, select “Network & Internet,” select “Ethernet,” and click the name of your Ethernet connection.
You’ll see a few options for whichever Wi-Fi or Ethernet network you’re currently connected to. The “Make this PC discoverable” option controls whether a network is public or private. Set it to “On” and Windows will treat the network as a private one. Set it to “Off” and Windows will treat the network as a public one.
It’s a bit confusing because the Control Panel still refers to “Public” and “Private” networks, while the Settings app just refers to whether a PC is “discoverable”. However, these are the same setting–it’s just worded and exposed in a different way. Toggling this switch in the Settings app will switch a network between Public and Private in the Control Panel.
How to Customize Discovery and Firewall Settings
Windows 10 is clearly trying to simplify things by omitting any further options from the Settings app and just referring to whether a network is “discoverable” or not. However, there are still a variety of options in the Control Panel that take effect differently on public and private networks.
To adjust discovery settings, open the Control Panel, select “View network status and tasks” under Network and Internet, and click “Change advanced sharing settings.” From here, you can control network discovery, file sharing, and Homegroup settings for public and private networks. You could even enable discovery on public networks, if you wanted to do this for some reason. Or, you could disable discovery on private networks. By default, older-style Windows “file and printer sharing” is disabled on both types of networks, but you can enable it on either or both.
The Windows Firewall also has different settings for private and public networks. In the Control Panel, you can click “System and Security” and then click “Windows Firewall” configure the built-in firewall’s options. For example, you could have Windows disable the firewall on private networks but enable it on public ones, if you liked–but we definitely don’t recommend this. You can also click “Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall” and you’ll be able to adjust firewall rules to behave differently on public networks or private ones.
Set publicly accessible networks to public and ones at your home or workplace to private. if you’re not sure which–for example, if you’re at a friend’s house–you can always just set the network to public. You’d only need to set a network to private if you planned on using network discovery and file-sharing features.
