I had earlier shared a trick on how to get rid of repeated and intrusive annoying Windows 10 upgrade prompts from Microsoft on Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines, but Micrsosoft seems to be getting more aggressive trying to push Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8.1 users and it is getting harder for users to prevent the upgrade from getting installed automatically.

Responding to the significant user displeasure regarding the tactics used to push down the major OS upgrade down the throats of Windows users, Microsoft added features to its Windows Update facility which allowed it to be configured and not forcibly upgrade qualifying Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems to Windows 10. However, Microsoft did not make this configuration simple. It requires the use of the group policy editor (which is not present in some qualifying systems) and/or the system registry. In other words, they created some deep internal configuration options but chose not to provide a simple user-interface to give their users the choice. Freeware utility Never10 allows users use the very same configuration in a simple to use manner. A single click is all it takes to "opt-out" from the Windows 10 upgrade prompts the Microsoft recommended way. The elegance of this “Never 10” utility, is that it does not install ANY software of its own.

Stats show Internet Explorer’s share is collapsing

If you’re an Internet Explorer fan, the chances are that you’ll soon be the only one, as more and more users are moving away from Microsoft’s old browser and replacing it with more modern alternatives.

This isn’t at all surprising given the fact that Microsoft itself has abandoned the browser, but new market share figures provided by StatCounter show just how fast the world is switching to more powerful alternatives.

Microsoft’s plan was to move users from Internet Explorer to Edge, the new Windows 10 default browser, and while some are indeed doing this, the majority of customers are actually switching to a third-party alternative.

Google Chrome, the dominant leader

Google Chrome is currently dominating the browser market and StatCounter’s data for the month of March 2016 put this browser at the top of the charts with a share of no less than 60.1 percent. This means that more than one in two PCs are running Google Chrome, which is quite an impressive achievement given the fact that Google’s browser needs to be manually downloaded on Windows PCs (whereas Internet Explorer and Edge are pre-installed).

Internet Explorer is not even the second option, as Firefox has already become the runner-up with a share of 15.69 percent, so the difference between the first two places is huge to say the least.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is not far behind Firefox (but continuously going down) with 13.67 percent. As far as Microsoft Edge is concerned, it’s one of the least used browsers currently on desktop computers, with a share of 2.15 percent.

Adoption of Edge should improve in the coming months as Microsoft completes work on some exciting updates including support for extensions. These new features are projected to arrive in the summer with the so-called Windows 10 Anniversary Update, so until then, expect Internet Explorer to continue its collapse, while Edge’s market share should remain largely the same.

Some users pushed button accidentally, lost potential jobs

You don't hear this very often, but Google's April Fools' Day joke wasn't funny at all this year, ending up confusing users, some of which even complained about losing jobs because of it.

Yesterday, as the first countries around the globe were entering the month of April, Google announced a new feature in Gmail called "Mic Drop," an obvious April Fools' Day prank.

As the company describes it, Mic Drop is was a new button added to Gmail's email composer. This new orange button, when pressed, would insert a GIF showing one of the Minions characters dropping a mic at the end of each email.

If Google stopped here, it would have probably been funny for some people. But Google didn't. In fact, pressing the Mic Drop button would also mute the conversation, so the sender would stop receiving any replies in that email thread.

As soon as the feature went live, people immediately started complaining about it on Google's product forums, some of which were saying that they've accidentally clicked the orange button instead of the green one, and now they've been locked out of work conversations, and even new job opportunities.

Some users lost job opportunities

"So I've been going back with a potential employer all week and last night sent a critical follow up email and accidentally clicked 'Send + Mic Drop'," one user wrote. "Not only am I mortified of the mistake, but this could potentially cost me my dream job. [...] This was a horrible, horrible idea with potentially irreparable damages for me. [sic]"

Another user also writes: "I just sent off an email with my resume to the first person who wanted to interview me in months. I clicked the wrong button and sent it with the mic drop. Well, I guess I'm not getting that job. Words cannot describe how [expletive] off I am right now.  I'm actually shaking. One click, ONE CLICK and I lost the job.  [expletive]. Not funny, google. I'm going to go cry now. [sic]"

Even worse, some users also reported that the Mic Drop GIF also showed up when pressing the normal Send button, but not in all cases.
That surely didn't go as well as Google planned, but to the company's credit, they took the criticism on the chin, and immediately pulled the button before it could do any other damage.
