Some Toshiba laptop batteries might melt in your lap

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a public recall announcement on behalf of Toshiba, which warns around 91,000 users in the US, an additional 10,000 users in Canada about an issue with their Toshiba laptop's battery.

According to the recall's details, the issue affects the lithium-ion batteries installed in Portege, Satellite, and Tecra laptop models. Panasonic is the manufacturer of the laptops' battery model.

All laptops sold in the US and Canada between June 2011 through January 2016, manufactured in China and Japan are affected. The laptops were sold mainly through Office Depot, Staples, Toshibadirect.com, but also from other electronic stores or online websites.

Affected batteries may overheat and melt

Toshiba says that the laptop batteries may overheat and even melt, with the potential to hurt their owners. Four such cases have been reported so far.

Company representatives say that 39 laptop models may be affected. The company has published a page where it provides instructions on how to discover if a laptop is affected by this issue or not.

Toshiba provides an automated tool that obtains the laptop's serial and part number, along with its battery's serial and part number, and tells the user if his laptop is included in the recall. Manual verification steps are also provided, but these involve taking the laptop apart.

Affected users should use their laptop using an AC adaptor only

The company says that all battery units listed in the recall have the battery part numbers that begin with G71C (G71C*******). The issue may affect new laptops still under warranty, but also users that have had their battery replaced under or after their warranty expired.

Some users that are not in Toshiba's list of possibly affected laptop models may still be affected if they replaced their original battery with one from this batch.

The company says that the simplest way to avoid any issues with the battery is to use the laptop with its AC charger plugged in all the time. The issue only appears only when the laptop is functioning on pure battery power alone.

Users that are affected by this recall will receive a new battery for free. A normal replacement battery of this type costs between $70 and $130.

Valve Software released the SteamVR Performance Test on Steam which will test the computer's performance and compatibility with SteamVR.

If you believe the hype, Virtual Reality (VR) is the next big thing after 3D Television. While it is unlikely that it will fade and wither like 3D TV, the first generation gadgets that are about to be released this year come at a premium price and require a fast computer system on top of that.

If that would not be bad enough, game and application support is limited at best.
 
SteamVR Performance Test
 

 
The SteamVR Performance Test has been released by Valve on Steam. You do need a Steam account to download the application using the Steam client.
The application itself is free and has no other dependencies besides that. The app has a size of 1.9 Gigabyte and may take a while to download and install on the underlying system depending on the device's Internet connection at that time.

The application runs a demo for several minutes which collects performance information. It checks whether the PC can run VR content at 90 frames per second, and whether the visual quality meets Valve's standards.

 

 
If that is not the case, it will highlight which component of the PC is lacking suggesting to upgrade it for maximum compatibility.

The SteamVR Performance Test measures your system's rendering power using a 2-minute sequence from Valves Aperture Robot Repair VR demo. After collecting the data it determines whether your system is capable of running VR content at 90fps and whether VR content can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level. For machines that are not VR Ready the tool can help determine whether capabilities are bound by Graphics Card, CPU, or both.

It is interesting to note that memory does not seem to play a role at all in the recommendation even though it should play a role. In addition, USB capabilities are not tested as well and Valve suggests to check the requirements that the VR hardware has in this regard to find out about required ports and standards.

Initial benchmarks released by AMD show that systems should have at least a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390 video card to get the "ready" rating in regards to VR capability.

The Oculus Rift team released its own benchmark a month earlier which you can run to find out if your PC is capable of the device. The bechmark tests memory and USB capabilities of the PC it is run on which makes it more thorough than Valve's SteamVR Performance Test.

I'm not sure why Idle games are that popular to be honest, but it is one of the most popular Flash and HTML5 game categories out there right now.

Let me explain how these games work. Basically, what you do in the game is click on the screen to earn a currency like gold or gems. After a while, you have enough money to buy your first AI helpers that add DPS to your click rate so that you can sit back and relax if you want.

You can upgrade your own click damage and that of the AI, and unlock new bots that help you as well as each new level that you unlock in the game is harder to beat than the previous one.

It is a numbers game more or less, with you getting more powerful but never quite powerful enough to beat the levels the game throws at you easily.
You even earn money when you are not doing anything, hence the term idle game.

Auto Clicker is a free program that provides you with the means to simulate mouse clicks. Since it is beneficial to click as often as you can in idle games, you may use a program like Auto Clicker to speed up your progress in the game.

Some may call this cheating, but since those games are time wasters, you may want to speed things up just a bit using programs.

You can download Auto Clicker from Sourceforge and run it directly as it is provided as an executable file.

It displays its interface and with it all the configuration options it ships with. What you may want to do is decrease the time between clicks by changing the value in the milliseconds field at the top of the interface.



Once done, load the idle game in your browser of choice, move the mouse cursor over the area you want clicks to be registered in, and hit the F6 hotkey to start the simulation.

Once you are done, hit F6 again to stop the simulation.

In addition to getting more clicks per second thanks to the assistance of the computer, you may also use the tool to rest your click fingers for a while if you have used them to hammer on the left mouse button for a period of time.

Redmond revamping the Start menu with new features

The upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update is going to bring several important changes for users of Microsoft’s new operating system, including a redesigned Start menu supposed to provide easier access to installed apps.

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s improving Windows 10 around universal apps and the new Start menu will bring back the “All apps” view that was previously available in Windows 8.1. This means that straight from the Start menu you should be able to see all installed apps on the device easier than in the current version of the menu.

“The All apps list is essential to understanding which apps you have on your device. We’ve elevated this list to the top level of the UI to reduce clicking & scrolling. This makes it easier to access apps in the All Apps list. It also reinforces the consistent Start experience across form factors,” Microsoft’s engineers explained at Build last week.

The Start menu likes hamburgers too

But the most striking change is the addition of a hamburger button hiding additional settings in the Start menu.

As you can see in the screenshot attached to this article and in the GIF below, which shows the new Start menu in action, the left side has been redesigned to include a hamburger button which reveals more settings only when clicked. User account preferences have been moved under this icon, just like settings and power settings.

In the current version of the Start menu, both Settings and power controls take up a larger part of the left side of the menu, so in the Anniversary Update, only icons will be shown under the hamburger icon.

Given the fact that this feature is still in the works, Microsoft’s asking insiders to provide feedback to improve the Start menu, so make sure you submit your thoughts to the company before it’s too late.

More updates show up in the store today on Windows 10

If you’re on Windows 10, you probably noticed that new app updates ship much more frequently than before, mostly thanks to Microsoft’s new Windows as a Service approach that brings improvements to users exactly when they are ready.

That’s what’s happening today, as Microsoft has just rolled out a new update for the pre-installed Windows 10 Mail and Calendar app, but also for OneNote, only a few days after the two received another set of improvements.

Details regarding the contents of these updates are not available, but this shouldn’t be a big surprise because only a small percent of app updates on Windows 10 actually come with release notes.

What we can tell for sure, however, is that both updates come with performance improvements and optimizations, so there’s no doubt that everyone should install them as soon as possible. Furthermore, they are expected to correct some of the bugs reported in the previous versions and this makes both quite critical for those who expect flawless performance from Windows Store apps.

Just like before, the new versions are shipped to Windows 10 devices through the integrated store, so fire up the Windows Store and get them as soon as possible. In the default configuration, the store automatically downloads app updates, so the chances are they’re already there if you haven’t changed the settings.

Microsoft relaxed its stance in regards to local accounts on Windows 10 in comparison to Windows 8 where you were could not use several features if you did not have a Microsoft Account.

Microsoft Account vs. Local Account:

Before we take a look at converting a Microsoft Account to a local account, it is important to understand what the differences between both account types are.

A Microsoft Account is an online account, and if you use it to sign in on devices running Windows 10, that account is automatically used by apps like Windows Store, Photos or Mail.

In addition, some configuration settings get synced across devices automatically. You can check those out with a tap on Windows-I, and switching to Accounts > Sync your settings when the window opens up.

The downside of using a Microsoft Account is that Microsoft can link the account to the devices you sign in. Also, it will link the account to the apps you run that support Microsoft Account sign-ins.

With a local account, you may be asked to sign in to a Microsoft Account at one point or another, whereas that won't happen if you are signed in with one already. Some apps, like Windows Store, require a Microsoft Account to download apps.
 
Also, Microsoft Accounts can be attacked online, while local accounts are protected from that.

You have several options to find out whether you are signed in with a local account or Microsoft Account.

When it comes to signing-in to the system, local accounts allow you to use a username to sign in while Microsoft Accounts are linked to the account email address instead.

Another option to find out is to use Windows-I to open the Settings app. There you need to switch to Accounts > Your email and accounts.

The account type is listed at the top. In the screenshot above, it is a local account with administrative privileges. Microsoft Accounts are indicated by an email address instead.

Switch a Microsoft Account to a Local Account:

Good news is that it is very easy to switch an existing Microsoft Account to a local account on Windows 10. Even better, all programs, apps and modifications remain available when you do so.
 
Step 1: Press Windows-I to open the Settings application. Switch to Accounts > Your email and accounts. Click on "Sign in with a local account instead".

Tip: If you are using a local account, you can switch back to using a Microsoft Account on the same page. The option to "sign in with a Microsoft account instead" is displayed in this case.
 

 
Step 2: You are asked to confirm the migration by entering the account password of the Microsoft Account on the next page.
 

 
Step 3 : Now it is time to create the local account. Enter the desired username and password, and add a password hint as well.



Final Step: Once the local account has been created, it is time to sign in to the Windows machine using it. Click on the "sign out and finish" button to do that.
