Asphalt 8: Airborne for Windows Phone, Android and iOS Updated with New Cars
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-07-2016 , 04:21 PM - Forum: Gaming News - No Replies

Other new gaming features have been added too

French mobile developer Gameloft has just released another content update for its smash hit Asphalt 8: Airborne. The most recent update is now available for download on all major platforms, including Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

Gameloft’s Asphalt 8: Airborne has received new cars, as well as new game features in the latest update. One of the most important new cars added by developers is the blazing-fast Lamborghini Huracan, so if you've ever dreamed of driving one, here is your chance.

But aside from the Lamborghini Huracan, Gameloft has also added the Kepler Motion, as well as four other world’s best sports cars that will be introduced in the next couple of weeks.

More immersive gameplay experience with the addition of accidents and incidents

Furthermore, the official changelog mentions that they have added more than 100 types of animation for accidents and incidents, so the game should now provide players with a more immersive experience.

Some under-the-hood changes and minor bug fixes might have been added as well, but no additional details are mentioned in the changelog.

Anyway, if you don't have the game yet, you can now download Asphalt 8: Airborne for Android for free via Google Play Store. The game should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 2.3 and up.

For iOS users, the game can be downloaded for free via App Store. It should work smoothly on all devices running iOS 6.1.6 or newer.

Last but not least, players can now download Asphalt 8: Airborne for Windows Phone for free via Windows Store. The game should be fully compatible with all handsets running Windows Phone 8 and up.

Keep in mind that while the title is free to download, it comes with in-app purchases. If you don't want to spend real money, then you can disable this feature from your device's Settings.

Doom Reveals Season Pass Details, Free New Content Also Coming
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-07-2016 , 04:17 PM - Forum: Gaming News - No Replies

Gamers can test two maps and mods in an open beta

Developer id Software and publisher Bethesda are getting ready to finally launch the long-awaited reboot of Doom and the two companies are ready to announce their plans for post-release content delivery for the shooter and the way gamers can test it before it is officially out on May 13.

The open beta will include the Team Deathmatch and Warpath, and gamers will be able to see two maps, Heatwave and Infernal, with the team working on the title encouraging players to offer feedback on the mechanics and the infrastructure.

When the full version of Doom launches, gamers will be able to play a wider variety of modes and maps, and they will also be able to see the SnapMap system to create their own content and then share it with the rest of the community.

id software is also planning to deliver its own stream of new experiences for the shooter using a classic Season Pass that will feature three downloadable content packs while also introducing free updates that will improve the game.

For SnapMap, the company is aiming to expand options by introducing map modules, props, objects, Artificial Intelligence boosts, enhancements for editing tools and other new functionality.

New game modes are introduced for free for Doom multiplayer

So far the company has not named or hinted at their nature, but they will probably arrive monthly, at least at first, with patches that eliminate bugs and introduce better balance.

When it comes to the Season Pass, id Software states that “In addition to the planned free support and content updates, we will also be releasing three premium multiplayer DLC packs after launch, which will get you a number of new maps, hack modules, playable demons, weapons and more.”

During summer the first major pack for Doom will be live and will feature three new maps, one weapon, a playable demon, a powerful armor set, a new piece of equipment, more hack modules and taunts, and extra ways to customize a character.

Each new DLC delivery will be offered for 14.99 dollars or Euro, and those who get the Season Pass will be able to only pay 39.99 dollars or Euro for all three that are coming.

The new Doom is designed to be a fast and violent experience that will ask gamers to stay constantly aware of their surroundings to stay alive while learning how to take out both humans and demons in multiplayer and singleplayer.

The game will be offered on the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Microsoft Launches Windows 10 Build 14316 with Huge Improvements
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-07-2016 , 04:11 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - Replies (2)

[Image: microsoft-launches-windows-10-build-1431...2644-3.jpg]

This is one of the biggest updates released so far

Today Microsoft has released Windows 10 build 14316, another preview version of the upcoming Anniversary Update that brings quite a significant number of changes, some of which we’ve already heard about either at Build 2016 or through unofficial channels.

First and foremost, build 14316 is the first to bring the Bash on Windows, so starting with this version, you can try out the Windows Subsystem for Linux on your Windows 10 computer.

Then, Cortana has received particular attention in this release, so starting today, the personal assistant brings together PCs and smartphones in a much more effective way. Windows insiders with Android devices can also experience the power of Cortana on their Windows 10 desktops, so you can get low battery notifications right on the PC when your phone is running out of battery.

Furthermore, there’s an option to search for the phone and make it ring, which means that you can easily find it around the house by making Cortana play a ringtone from the PC. Additionally, you are allowed to share map directions across devices, again with the personal assistant, by simply telling Cortana “directions to x,” and she will send these navigation instructions to your phone too.

Microsoft wants to make it easier for everyone to use Cortana, so if you are living in a supported country, your phone will automatically download all needed files and speech languages to have the personal assistant work smoothly.

New Microsoft Edge extensions

Microsoft continues work on Edge browser, so this new build also brings new extensions, namely Pin It Button and OneNote Clipper. All the other options have been updated too.

“There is change in this build that will break existing extensions installed on your PC in Microsoft Edge if they were previously installed using an older build. You can download the new installation files and re-install the existing extensions using the new installers,” Microsoft warns.

As we’ve told you in the last couple of weeks, Microsoft has been working to improve the Action Center, so starting with this build, all these enhancements become available to users too. You are allowed to prioritize notifications with three different levels (normal, high, and priority) and adjust how many notifications you want to see for each app.

There are also new emoji, which Microsoft says align with the company’s Design Language, as well as a quick toggle to switch between dark and light themes.

“When you switch to dark mode, apps such as Settings, Store, Alarms & Clock, Calculator and other UWP apps that listen and respond to theme changes in the OS will change into dark mode. Some UWP apps that control their own theme settings (separate from Windows) won’t change by toggling this setting,” Microsoft explains.

Virtual desktop and Windows Update improvements

The virtual desktops feature has also been improved with an option to pin a window that becomes available, which should really come in handy for apps that you want to have around all the time, such as an email client.

Windows Update has finally received the Active Hours feature that makes it possible to select the hours when you are working on your computer so that updates won’t be installed during this whole time. This feature should also arrive on Windows 10 Mobile with a future update.

The battery saving feature has also been enhanced with a new name (now called just Battery) and information, so you can even see more details for each process.

This new build is only available for the fast ring, but keep in mind that all these great features will be part of the Anniversary Update coming this summer for all Windows 10 users.

Facebook for Android and iOS Updated with Lots of New Features
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-07-2016 , 04:07 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - Replies (1)

Replay comments, reactions, better discovery

Facebook has just announced it will introduce several new features for Android and iOS users in the next couple of weeks. All these new features aim to turn Facebook Live into a strong competitor to Periscope and other similar video services.

Among the new features that will be made available to all those who use Facebook Live, the company's live video platform, it’s worth mentioning the ability to see the comments that came in while a broadcast was live so that users don’t have to miss out on all the interaction that took place. This new feature is called Replay Comments, and it should be available along with the others.

Reactions is just another feature confirmed by Facebook, which will allow users to react to something during a live stream with a Like, a Heart or any of the other reactions Facebook has already launched in the past.

Better discovery for mobile users, Facebook Live Map for desktop users

Facebook Live users will also be able to choose to go live within a Group or Event page, so only the people in those groups or invited to those events will see the stream.

Last but not least, Facebook Live will feature better discover, so users will be able to invite friends to watch with them, find new live feeds with a dedicated tab in the Facebook application, and look at a glove to find new streams.

In other news, developers have announced that they are releasing a Facebook Live Map on desktop, so people in more than 60 countries will now be able to share live video. Thanks to the Facebook Live Map, users will be provided with a window to what’s happening in the world at any time. New metrics for Pages sharing live video will be available too.

According to Facebook, all the new features mentioned earlier will be rolled out on Android and iOS over the coming weeks. If you can’t wait to take advantage of these video-oriented features, then you should keep an eye on your Facebook application for any updates available via Google Play Store.

Windows 10 Users Will Soon Be Able to Send Phone Text Messages from PCs
Posted by: tarekma7 - 04-07-2016 , 03:50 PM - Forum: Software Discussion - Replies (1)

Microsoft brings PCs and smartphones closer together

Microsoft has confirmed that future Windows 10 builds would bring a new feature to insiders (and to retail users with the Anniversary Update in the summer) that will allow them to send SMS messages from their phones using only their desktops.

One of the objectives that Microsoft wants to accomplish with Windows 10 is to bring together PCs and mobile phones and this is one of the reasons the company talks about all devices running its new operating system, be they desktops, handsets, tablets, or tablets, as a whole.

Windows 10 as a platform for all devices:

Windows 10 is regarded as an entire platform powering all these devices and that’s why Microsoft is not at all upset with the rather small share of its mobile business. It only wants Windows 10 to grow bigger as a whole platform, trying to offer the same look, feel, and features across all devices.

And one way to do that is to connect PCs and smartphones running Windows 10. A new feature that will debut in the coming builds will allow users to send text messages from their desktops through their phones to any contact.

This feature already exists on iOS and Microsoft is believed to be planning to provide Windows 10 users with a feature similar to Apple’s Handoff that creates an even more advanced connection between PCs and smartphones. It would basically allow to start work on a PC and then continue on a phone from where you left off, so you can write an email on the desktop and then leave and continue adding text while on the go on your phone.

Only Windows 10 Mobile devices supported at first:

But for the moment, Microsoft is only bringing in the possibility of sending text messages from the desktop through phones. Only Windows 10 Mobile devices will be supported at first, but if a Handoff-like feature is being developed, Cortana could bring such features on non-Windows devices too.

“We will soon be enabling a preview of the ‘Messaging everywhere’ feature in Windows 10 that allows you to send and receive text messages from your phone directly from your Windows 10 PC’s. You will see options for this feature in the Messaging app on PC however an update is required for the Messaging app for Mobile for this experience to work. More to come on this when the experience is live,” Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

There’s no timing info as to when this feature is supposed to arrive, but since the Anniversary Update should be here in July, expect to get it as soon as possible.

What you need to know about erasing SSDs
Posted by: baziroll - 04-07-2016 , 02:12 PM - Forum: Security News - Replies (1)

Until recently, hard disk drives prevailed as the dominant storage device on desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, servers, and data centers. But thanks to the drop in price for solid state drives (SSD), that has changed. SSDs are more popular among both individual users and businesses. But for all of the advantages, they also possess unique traits that present some difficulties in wiping data from them.
Unfortunately, knowledge of the proper solid state drive erasure methods has not been anywhere near as fast or as ubiquitous as the SSD adoption rate. So you will often see methods that are assumed to be reliable -- such as reformatting and factory resets -- being performed on solid state drives. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to properly erase data from SSDs -- it just means users need to understand all of the technical features, the key situations when data has to be absolutely erased and the most reliable data removal method that needs to be used.

Know the Basics of How Solid State Drives Work
Solid state drives are simpler than HDDs in that they don’t have moving mechanical parts. They’re also smaller, lighter and less power intensive. But as I said, SSDs are more complicated when it comes to wiping data from them. They apply complex data management schemes to distribute data across their internal memory chips. They also contain a much larger pool of spare memory capacity accessible only by the SSD. In turn, this prolongs the performance and life of the drives. But it also means that certain data on the drive remains hidden from the host.
Proactively Plan to Remove Data in Key Situations
The reality of the world we live in today is that inordinate amounts of information are created, stored, tracked, and transferred within the digital universe. But nothing lasts forever -- that includes SSDs. That means these drives will eventually hit their end of life when a server, storage device or other piece of IT infrastructure is retired, then the drive has to retire along with it. And any data contained on them must be erased too.
Most businesses don’t have the capacity to store all of their data on their own premises -- so they tend to move it from one location to another -- be it to data centers, cloud storage environments or elsewhere. When this data is being moved to its new location, it needs to be wiped clean from its original location. This often gets overlooked -- and it’s something that more companies need to prepare for because of how common it is to move data between locations.
Another situation to be cognizant of -- and plan for -- is data that doesn’t need to live forever. This could be data that was created and stored for a particular time-sensitive project that involves confidential information and parties. When the project ends, the data needs to be erased permanently so that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
Now it’s important to remember the varying types and amounts of corporate data that employees create and store on their laptops, desktop computers, smartphones and tablets. And a growing number of these devices are equipped with solid state drives. But it’s become so rare for employees to stay long periods of time at one company.
So when employees leave the company -- for whatever reason -- all of that data must be erased before they leave. This is extremely important when you consider it’s not just personal information they’re storing on them; it’s often confidential and sensitive company information and files. If that data isn’t erased in the proper manner, it could jeopardize the business in multiple ways.
Following the EU’s passing of the General Data Protection Regulation in December 2015, it’s important to be able to securely, reliably, and verifiably remove data from SSDs when regulation demands that customer data is removed -- or "forgotten". In order to prove compliance with this type of legislation -- and those being imposed by other governing bodies -- simply deleting the data isn’t good enough. It must be completely expunged, forever.
One of the least desirable situations is the time after a major disaster hits, such as an earthquake, a hurricane, or a tsunami. In the same Red Cross and other charitable organizations are dispatched to deploy disaster recovery services. Part of that disaster recovery should include recovery of the data and storage at an offsite location. But once production systems are restored back to normal, any data left on the recovery drives need to be erased.
Know the Most Reliable Way to Erase Data From Solid State Drives
Although upkeep of SSDs can be complicated and difficult, it’s not impossible by any means. It just means users need to use the right data removal method that meets certain criteria. The method should accommodate the functionality differences of SSDs regardless of the manufacturer. Second, it’s critical to use an automated technique to remove system BIOS freeze locks -- that allows users to have better access and control over their internal data erasure processes.
More importantly, users can’t simply assume the method and tool used to remove data from SSDs are reliable. They need to be able to benchmark both the method and tool against industry testing and validation standards. Without this, there is no true way to determine if the method and tool can be trusted. Following this same logic, anyone erasing data from SSDs -- whether it’s an end user or an enterprise user -- should demand physical proof that verifies all data has been completely erased. I often use the filing taxes analogy -- users need to be able to show proof if the IRS comes knocking on their door. The same goes for data removal -- proof will protect you from having data leaked and violating regulatory standards.

Microsoft releases Cloud App Security to protect SaaS apps and data
Posted by: baziroll - 04-07-2016 , 02:10 PM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

Back in September of last year we reported that Microsoft had announced its purchase of cloud security firm Adallom to help its customers protect their cloud-based data and applications.
In February it teased that a new Cloud App Security offering based on Adallom's technology would be released in April. Well, today the wait is over and the product becomes generally available as a cloud-delivered service to help IT and security teams gain visibility and control over cloud apps.

Writing on the company's blog back in February, Bret Arsenault, Microsoft's chief information security officer says, "Microsoft Cloud App Security brings the same level of visibility and control that IT departments have in their on-premises network to their SaaS applications including apps like Box, SalesForce, ServiceNow, Ariba, and of course Office 365".
Cloud App Security identifies all cloud applications on a network -- from all devices -- and provides risk scoring and ongoing risk assessment and analytics. It allows admins to set granular controls and policies for data sharing and loss prevention (DLP), leveraging API-based integration. Users can opt to use out-of-the box policies or build and customize their own. Cloud App Security also provides threat protection for cloud applications using user behavioral analytics and anomaly detection.
As a first step network logs are uploaded to the service. These are analyzed and admins can then choose which apps are sanctioned and need to be connected to the service. Once that's done data control policies can be set up and admins start to receive alerts. You can read more about how it works on the Microsoft Cyber Trust Blog.
It's available on a subscription basis at $5 per user per month. If you're interested in finding out more you can visit the Cloud App Security product page to request a trial.

Basic API security measures are often overlooked
Posted by: baziroll - 04-07-2016 , 02:08 PM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

APIs are the glue that holds much of the digital world together, connecting systems, apps and data. But a new survey reveals that many organizations are failing to place enough emphasis on API security.
Research company Ovum in partnership with bot detection and mitigation firm Distil Networks, surveyed 100 IT and security professionals. They found that 30 percent of APIs are planned out with no input from the IT security team and 27 percent of APIs proceed through the development stage without the IT security team weighing in.

Other findings include that 87 percent of respondents were running an API management platform, with 63 percent using a platform developed in-house. However, rate limiting, considered to be a basic API security practice, was employed by less than half of respondents.
Of those surveyed 53 percent feel security teams should be responsible for API security, while 47 percent think the developer teams should hold responsibility.
It's clear that APIs have taken hold, with 20 percent of respondents saying they're maintaining, building, or publishing more than 50, while at the other end of the scale, 32 percent are working on between one and 10. The remainder are running somewhere between 11 and 50 APIs, but Ovum expects to see the number grow over the next few years.
A significant proportion are using public APIs that are exposed to developers outside their own companies. 51 percent say that at least part of the rationale for their APIs was to enable an external developer community/ecosystem, while 67 percent say that partner connectivity is a driving factor.
The report's authors note, "Our survey finds that most respondents are at least concerned with the issue of API security, which is as it should be. Furthermore, most of them are using some form of API management platform, and the majority of platforms in use provide some level of security capability. However, there is by no means blanket coverage of all aspects of API security by all platforms."
